BernardBlacksMolluscs · 02/10/2023 12:43

So is Switch still alive do we know?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 02/10/2023 12:52

We don't know, I think. Strike hasn't kept tabs at all.

I imagine Switch is alive.

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2023 13:06

So Leda had three children by three different dads. At least Lucy's one paid child support
I did wonder if Johny would be mentioned as he has cancer , but nothing.
Maybe in the next book

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2023 13:29

Anyone else love Pat and her husband explaining how a lot of the tricks were done ?

That's very confusing, isn't it? I assumed in the Wiki article the Whittaker being referred to was the baby so 'his grandparents' were actually Whittaker Senior's parents, but no, the baby was adopted by his great-grandparents (this feels somewhat unlikely, doesn't it? They can't have been much less than 60 at the time).

That said, I do like JKR's propensity for Mad Names for Posh People - Charlotte's family was full of insane names: "Viscount Jago Ross, Charlotte's ex-husband, looking as ever like a dissolute arctic fox; her floppy-haired stepbrother, Valentine Longcaster; Sacha Legard, her handsome half-brother, who was an actor". You feel like there's a whole series of bonkbusters JKR could write if she wanted to.

That age wouldn't be a barrier at all if the grandparents were keen especially if they had good family support.

I'm surprised that a person like Whittaker has family willing to take a child on. Maybe money changed hands or they just felt sorry for Switch and didn't want him in care ?
Both strike and Charlotte have such fractured family trees

A person like Whittaker? People who are drug addicts usually have family members who aren't drug addicts - there is often someone in a family network who is suitable to take children rather than have them be adopted. Your comment is odd to be honest. I'm sure you didn't mean it but it's a bit presumptuous and judgemental.

Yes! But I do want to know how Dennis levitated, even if 'no girl needs a man to be able to rise two inches into the air', or whatever it was Pat said.

tribpot · 02/10/2023 13:48

I looked on YouTube for ways to fake levitation 😆

Didn’t creepy David blane used to do this? Something to do with standing on one foot?

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2023 14:00

Sorry , didn't mean to offend about Whittakers family , was just surprised that they took switch in.

OK, new things for me to try while I should be at work. Thanks for that [crash].

Whittaker was the grandson of a diplomat, so his grandparents were well to do, but his mother was a schizophrenic teenage mother and he didn't know who his father was.

Given that Whittaker was only in his early 20s when his son was born, his mother probably would have been 40ish so his grandparents could have been 70ish when they took Switch in.

Sure. It's really really common though for children to go to relatives these days. Most people who neglect/abuse their children don't come from families where there is endemic/systemic neglect and abuse. Even where that is the case you can often find someone who wants to care.

uuughhhshsh · 02/10/2023 16:14

I’ve been researching yoga and meditation retreats for a few months now with a view to possibly going to one for a weekend. This book has put me right off 😂

If I end up going to one, I’ll let you all know and put a fake rock near the perimeter ready to be rescued by local MNers 😂

Lancelottie · 02/10/2023 16:49

Make it a large enough one for nourishing snacks!

Prrambulate · 02/10/2023 17:44

Make it a boulder for M&S picky bits…

tribpot · 02/10/2023 18:12

@uuughhhshsh tell them they'll pry your phone from your cold, dead hands (although in the case of the UHC that would just have been taken as an invitation).

I would also pack a camping fridge with decent food, a distress flare and a backup phone you keep in your bra. Learn from Robin.

I thought she would get caught with flake crumbs down her tracksuit. I know I would!

BiscuitTins · 02/10/2023 18:50

Just started my re-read. Love this from chapter two:
Pat was the agency’s office manager, an implausibly black-haired, chain smoking woman of fifty-eight who looked at least a decade older😁
I love how we got to know more about her in this book

TheHorneSection · 02/10/2023 18:55

😂😂

Thanks, I couldn’t remember the exact quote but I knew she’d already implied Pat was lying about her age.

TheHorneSection · 02/10/2023 18:56

What I loved is that you could see that Pat and Dennis and their no nonsense but kindly attitude would probably do more to de-program Will than half the therapists.

fluckityfluckfluck · 02/10/2023 19:41

So good. I've re listened to the last chapter three times. Back to start now Grin

Thedrownedprophet · 02/10/2023 19:55

Pat is hands down my favourite character. I've loved the way her and Strikes relationship has developed.

Sam is also superb "Great, I fancy punching someone. The Mother-in-law's staying". (When the Frank brothers made their move)
