There was a thing on the 25th anniversary of The Royle family the other day. Sitcom costs too much to produce now and much of a nations humour doesn't sell easily abroad (though how Mrs Brown's Boys manages to defy that is anyone's guess)
So TV channels are reliant on cheap panel shows and for that you need lots and lots of makeweight comedians. Hence the afterlife of most standups. They're valuable for ratings. Hence dubious star power
