What actually works? I seriously can't breathe through my nose, I've never had a cold this bad before 😭

Help!

If it's congestion, Otrivine is the best thing. Nothing like it - wonderful relief!

Newuser75 · 26/09/2023 19:34

Nasal spray but you can't use it too much or else you get rebound congestion. It's a lifesaver at times though!

Threelionsandalioness · 26/09/2023 19:37

Piriton tablets or liquid form works wonders for a blocked up nose and so does vicks rubbed on your chest and back, you may have to reapply the vicks through the night but put quite a lot on the first time

Steam. Boiling water in the sink/large bowl, towel over your head.
It's horrible, it's my least favourite remedy to do but it works

CapEBarra · 26/09/2023 19:39

Get an oil burner and use half a dozen drops of Olbas Oil on the water.

Get in a hot shower. Once the steam is up chuck a few drops of Olbas Oil on the floor of the shower and they’ll mix with the steam.

Mentolyptus sweets.

Vicks Vapor in on your chest (and weirdly, on your feet - I don’t know why but it seems to help and also leaves feet feeling soft).

Are you sure you don’t have Covid? It’s rampant at the moment.

Mimilamore · 26/09/2023 19:40

Salt water... sterimar which is expensive or Seasalt in boiled water in a squinty bottle. Washes your sinuses.

Puffypuffin · 26/09/2023 19:42

Menthol crystals in hot water. Works a treat.

redmalt · 26/09/2023 19:42

I'm pregnant atm, can I use nasal sprays etc? I can't have Sudofed either as I had a reaction a few years ago 😞 this is hell, just want to breathe normally again!

@CapEBarra It does feel a lot like when I had Covid a couple of years ago! But unfortunately I've no tests so don't know. It's the blocked nose, body aches and it feels like my chest is on fire, absolutely awful.

Neil med sinus rinse 👍🏻

mambojambodothetango · 26/09/2023 20:53

Yes to Neil Med sinus rinse. I do it twice daily to keep a sinus condition under control and it's the only thing that unblocks me.

On fire or itchy for your chest out of interest?

It's an antihistamine, not a decongestant, so it'll do nothing for a cold except make it hard for the OP to concentrate at work or driving.

Sudafed from the pharmacy counter works, though.

redmalt · 26/09/2023 21:20

@Insommmmnia Like a burning feeling in my chest

Are you asthmatic or have you been checked for it? I get like a hot, inflamed, itchy sensation in my chest when a chest infection sets my asthma off. I don't wheeze with asthma I cough so it can be what makes me realise that's what it is

unsync · 26/09/2023 21:30

Sterimar nasal spray. It is purified sea water. Spray it in and blow it out. Quite surprising how much gunk comes out, it's oddly satisfying.

greenacrylicpaint · 26/09/2023 21:36

if pregnant you shouldn't take decongestant or cold remedies with camphor (read the labels of menthol rubs).

saline nose spray helps a big. cough sweets with menthol/eucalyptus (check for camphor)
sleeping propped up, almost sitting.

all the best

redmalt · 26/09/2023 21:48

Ok I've tried saline nasal drops and Vicks which I had in the cupboard but it's done absolutely nothing. I need to sleep but know I won't be able to if I don't do something about it. Is there anything else I could try which I could maybe pick up from Asda/Tesco?

Whataretheodds · 26/09/2023 21:52

Have you tried the bowl of steam? You can use sterimar.

Also, try a good hot curry or add chilli to some soup.

Drink plenty of fluids to help loosen the mucus.

This best thing ever.

Robinonaspade · 26/09/2023 21:55

I agree with those who have already recommended steam and sterimar congestion nasal spray. Our tesco pharmacy has it in.

readingmakesmehappy · 26/09/2023 21:57

Vapour rub on you and vapour plug in your bedroom (I take same approach with kids and it works).

MidnightMeltdown · 26/09/2023 21:57

Blocked nose isn't caused by mucus, it's caused by inflammation. You need a product that constricts the blood vessels. I use Sinex decongestant spray.
