What the actual fuck has my dog just done?

We live on a farm. I've just let the dog out into our orchard (her fave field) for an evening sniff/wee, the same as I do every evening about now. She ran off into the trees and then...didn't come back.

After a few minutes I went looking for her with a torch and realised there was a bunch of deer in there - I could see their eyes and hear them snorting. They ran off when I came near calling for the dog. Eventually the dog came absolutely pelting back to me looking terrified, absolutely covered in mud/bits of field/smears of god knows what, and stinking.

OMG the smell. She has made the whole house stink, some sort of musky putrid smell (not corpse or shit though). And she is so scared, I can't hardly get near her to try and wipe her down. She's just gone and hidden in her bed. I am literally retching from the smell, I've never smelled anything like it before. The DC are out of bed because they could smell it through their closed bedroom door!

Assuming the deer scared her? But she's seen deer plenty of times, they're always wandering around here Confused And has she rolled in something (but what??) and tried to hide from them? Or...?

Any tips for de-stinking a scared dog?

Fox poo maybe

cardiganboo · 25/09/2023 21:01

Anal gland fluid. They can squirt it if they are really scared. Horrid!

cardiganboo · 25/09/2023 21:01

Smells like stinky old ear wax

It's from the deer. And at least your dog's learnt a lesson. Take them to a groomer and pay a massive tip.

Not that I don't think. It's worst round her head 🤢

I think the previous posters mean anal gland fluid from the deer rather than the dog.

gamerchick · 25/09/2023 21:04

Well it's obviously something to do with the deer. They're tough bastards those things.

MrsColinRobinson · 25/09/2023 21:06

If it's greenish in colour it's fox poo.

Awful smell.

You'll have to wash her over and over again. Takes ages to get the smell out.

Oh bloody hell... well the poor dog looks more terrified than the deer did!! She didn't even bark, which she usually would if she was chasing something.

Ketchup gets the smell of fox poo and skunk etc out, you could try applying that then rinsing before shampooing. Leave it on 10 mins.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 25/09/2023 21:09

Mist likely it's fox sh1t. Dogs roll it in something to do with marking their territory. My dog either eats shite he finds or rolls in it.

I've not had to try it, but I have heard smothering them in ketchup is supposed to neutralise the smell. Good luck!

I'd vote fox poo too. I can't imagine the deer getting close enough to your dog. They usually leg it if a dog is nearby.

SelkieSeal · 25/09/2023 21:12

I do have ketchup, but I don't rate my chances of getting it all over her and then washing it off again... She's hiding and not even coming out for cheese 😬

Another vote for ketchup - my ddog seems to enjoy rolling in fox poo - ketchup is the only thing I have ever found that works - hope your ddog is okay and calms down soon.

Justhereforthebabynames · 25/09/2023 21:21

Aw poor pup. I'd forget about the smell for now and concentrate on calming her. A big chewy treat could work. I hope she didn't get kicked.

This is a good point - would be sensible to check her over closely in case she has been kicked/headbutt and has a rupture or something causing the smell. Probably not, but better to be on the safe side.

MariePaperRoses · 25/09/2023 21:30

Fairy washing up liquid. It's gentle on skin but dissolved the grease in faeces and any other animal secretions!

We have used it on pets since the 70s and probably before that!

I have never seen green fox poo, the little gifts I find most mornings are always shades of brown.

Haggistrap · 25/09/2023 21:33

Have the deer been rutting? Stags wallow in a big pile of mud that they piss in. It's a minging musky smell, sounds like she might have been rolling in there too then maybe got a fright if the stags chased her off?

Oioicaptain · 25/09/2023 21:34

Tomato ketchup will weirdly help remove the smell!

This. It’s bloody disgusting stuff. See it on the ground early morning and dog throws himself on it if I’m not quick enough to stop him.

Just seen your dog still hiding, check she’s not been kicked. Is her breathing ok?

Eyesopenwideawake · 25/09/2023 21:35

Fox shit - smells like fresh horseradish. Scrubbing with Fairy Liquid and warm water will get rid of it. Eventually.

SelkieSeal · 25/09/2023 21:35

She's let me wipe her down gently with a damp cloth now and I can't find any sore areas, she was fine with me touching her all over, and she isn't limping or anything like that. Plus she is a very dramatic sort of dog and does a lot of yelping over any injury, so I don't think she's been hurt ❤️ She's just very scared still. Poor thing.

I had to wear a face mask with olbas oil drops on to do it without retching though 🤢

This is why I would never have a dog. 🤢 Good luck, OP.

AHA this might be it, the rut is in October and we hear them doing the weird burpy rutting sound at night - it's not started yet but they must be gearing up to it. And now you say it, the smell reminds me of the stinking billy goat one of my friends has. I haven't been able to eat goats cheese since going to her goat farm and smelling him at his ripest!
