A Speak 'N' Spell. I'm not sure I ever actually asked for one, in my mind they were some hallowed gift I could never possibly hope to own. A family friend had one and I was obsessed, even though you could never make out the word to spell...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/09/2023 13:55

A puppy, but knew I’d never get one. Had to wait until I was grown up.

In early teens back in the Dark Ages I so badly wanted a particular record (vinyl) and dropped loads of hints but didn’t get it. It was Telstar, a big hit in the 60s. Only cost 6/8d, too.
I was a deprived child.🙁

JackRabbitSlims · 26/09/2023 13:57

A Petite 990 typewriter and a Polaroid camera.
No idea why I didn't get them but they were on my Xmas list for years.
I had a Mr Frosty. It was really hard to turn the ice grinder and it didn't really work. I remember just giving up and pouring the flavour sachets into my mouth.

Mammillaria · 26/09/2023 14:00

A space hopper.

It came up in conversation with my parents so they bought me one for Christmas. I was about 37. The DC loved it 😁 and I'd be lying if I didn't add that I spent many happy hours hopping around the garden on it too

I wanted Scalextric, I was told it wasn't for girls. My DB had trainsets. I wanted a dog but never bothered asking, I knew what the answer would be. I've had dogs since I was 21.

I really wanted Domino Rally. Can’t remember how old I was at the time, perhaps 7 or 8? Anyway, my mother was reluctant as it wasn’t very educational, apparently. But I did get it for Christmas. For all of two days, anyway, as my mother then decided it was cheap plastic shite that wasn’t worth the money and took it back to the shop. I was devastated.

Mr Frosty, Cadbury vending machine, action man and Stretch Armstrong. Majority of girls had no chance getting the last two in the seventies.
I went down a rabbit hole not long ago of watching YouTube videos of people shooting and blowing up Stretch Armstrong, he's quite resilient.

I requested a land yacht once after we had someone come in and demonstrate one at school. I received a long letter from Santa explaining all the reasons why I couldn't possibly have a land yacht. I remember being very disappointed.

Cabbage patch doll mum said no they are ugly
Train set mum said no it's a boy's toy.
Transformers mum said no it's a boy's toy.

As an adult, if I ask for a specific item, she will always buy the cheaper equivalent.

Carouselfish · 26/09/2023 14:21

Barbie Dreamhouse!! Couldn't afford it. Actually any major dolls' house would do. My kids now have a few dolls' houses. I am the one who sets all the little figures up in them.

Houseplanter · 26/09/2023 14:21

Kerplunk. I'd still quite like it actually

EyesOnThePies · 26/09/2023 14:23

Etch a Sketch
Real live snake
Satin jeans or hot pants

fandjango · 26/09/2023 14:28

Subbuteo!

One of the boys in our class used to being his in on the last day of term and everyone was so jealous.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/09/2023 14:44

I did get an etch-a sketch - having regretfully resisted Sindy and asked for something reasonably priced, when the parcel arrived they'd sent an etch-a-sketch by mistake. It cost about double what my original choice had, I'm not sure if my parents had to pay the extra but as catalog deliveries then took up to a month I got to keep it.

StoatofDisarray · 26/09/2023 14:49

A Chopper bike and we were too poor!

I wanted a real dog. Got one when I was 36.

I’m the exact same! I asked every single year and aged 36 I took it upon myself to get one 🤣🤣💪🏻

Still wanted a Mr Frosty though 😔

WellThisIsFun1 · 26/09/2023 14:53

A sink in my bedroom like my friend had.

That was my dream, to be able to brush my teeth then just climb into bed.

SueVineer · 26/09/2023 14:53

Mr Frosty.

Lovehearts82 · 26/09/2023 14:55

The play kitchen where in the advert the little girl served a slice of Swiss roll and baked beans 🤣 it was too expensive, as was a barbie and a Mr Frosty ☹️

Fifthtimelucky · 26/09/2023 15:02

The first toy I remember wanting was a pair of clackers in the 1960s. They were subsequently banned because they were unsafe, so obviously my parents knew better than I did.

The other things I remember wanting, but never getting, were a Spirograph and a space hopper.

Madlymumming · 26/09/2023 15:27

I always wanted the game Operation.

My mum didn't think it was a 'nice' game.

She really didn't 'do' medical stuff lol

theculture · 26/09/2023 15:30

One of those big plastic dolls heads that you could cut and style hair and do makeup

Too stereotypically girly for my right on parents in the 80's

I initially read that you wanting a doll whose head you could cut off!

Westfacing · 26/09/2023 15:37

No one under the age of 65 will know what a Jacko Monkey is, but that's what I wanted and never got! He wore a red and white striped top and I saw him in Woolworths. Smile

And a Tressy doll - her hair grew; never got one of those either!

CandleWick4 · 26/09/2023 15:37

A game boy. I remember my parents talking me out of wanting it. At the time I remember being disappointed but now as a parent I’m assuming they had their reasons. They either couldn’t afford it or knew I probably wouldn’t get much use out it. But man I wanted one
