How much do you pack for a 2 night trip?

I'm taking a work trip next week. It's only 2 nights so figured I'd only need hand luggage but... my holdall is looking very full and feeling very heavy!

How much do you normally take for a couple of nights trip?

Wearing comfy clothes on the flight out.
An outfit for the first evening, planning to go out with colleagues.
Jeans + jumper for day 1 wear.
A dress for evening out with colleagues again.
Jumpsuit for the day 2 wear.
Planning to wear the comfies home again but packed a spare tshirt just in case.

Undies x2 pairs per day.
Pyjamas x1 pair.
1 pair of more formal work/going out shoes.

Struggling to fit all my toiletries/liquids into the tiny 20x20 bag... shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, deodorant, perfume, moisturiser, nasal spray (needed), makeup, toothpaste.

Not bothering with a hairdryer.. hotel surely has one. Need straighteners, hairbrush, bobbles, hair clips.

I've been told before that I overpack, but is this normal or not?

I did this in August. I took clean pants and t shirts and my toothbrush. I don't take toiletries just used hotel ones. Wore the same suit I travelled in with clean t-shirt and pants both days. I would wear the same outfit all week if I was WFH so it's no different if in another location.

gogomoto · 24/09/2023 21:17

A lot less than that. Got two nights I'd travel in jeans, taking a couple of spare tops, I'd then pack evening outfits though ideally one would double up as daywear fit the middle day. I don't pack nightwear unless I'm staying on someone's sofa. I can pack for a two week trip in a motorcycle pannier, you learn to pack light!

gogomoto · 24/09/2023 21:18

Oh and one pair of pants per day and one emergency pair is plenty

It's really tricky to pack light for a work trip as you quite often need day and evening outfits. If I fly for work, I always check a bag in as I can't fit all my toiletries in the wee bag. Then there's carry on with laptop and that palaver!

Doggymummar · 24/09/2023 21:19

I went straight from flight to a meeting, then out to dinner with colleagues with no time to change. Checked into hotel about 11pm, bed then same next day final day up at 5 for early flight home.

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:21

Oh God yeah I need to fit my laptop in there too! Chargers. Book for the plane. Urgh. This isn't going to work.

Where are you going? I’ve only ever taken hand luggage on all trips as checking a bag is such a PITA so I can pack light.

I wear the heaviest stuff. Jeans, top, cardigan or coat, boots or trainers. In the bag, for two days, leggings, top, dress and pumps. Nightgown or sleep tee. Bra and 2x knickers. Toothbrush (I have a half size foldable), mini suncream and as little makeup as I can get away with.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 24/09/2023 21:26

I’d never take a hold-all, always small wheely case & cross body bag/rucksack

never plan to change outfit for workdays - how long is the flight? Anything less than 3hrs I wouldn’t change so:

travel in outfit for day 1 evening
2x undies
outfit for day 2
outfit for day 3
same shoes for both

I mostly wear dresses when travelling as lighter/easier

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:26

Do people really only take 1 pair of underwear per day?? I couldn't put the same pants I'd been wearing all day back on again after I'd showered for going out in the evening 😩

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 24/09/2023 21:30

The knickers isn’t an issue, even taking as many pairs as you are planning - they’re tiny in comparison to everything else.
For the sake of a 2 day trip I’d cut down on the toiletries. I’m really particular about what I use at home but for a couple of days would just use what the hotel provides. And I’d not bother with makeup either (but then I very rarely bother with it anyway).
Can you not just wear the outfit for day one on the plane? How long is the journey?
I don’t wear clothes to sleep in so that’s an easy one to cut down on for me!!

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:31

It's an almost 4 hour journey out, including an hour stopover as no direct flights. Then I've got to navigate a train and then taxi to the hotel. I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing my travelling clothes out for an evening meal.

Whataretheodds · 24/09/2023 21:32

If you're in a reasonable hotel there will be shampoo, shower gel, and probably body moisturiser.

Do you need pj's? I'd just take a sleeping bra (poss wear my pants) .

How long is the flight?

Sounds like each of your garments only works for one day or night apart from your travel comfies.

Do you need to change for dinner both days?

IncognitoMam · 24/09/2023 21:33

Can't you take a small carry on case? If you fold properly you can get lots on. What's the climate?

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:34

I've got a carry case but if my holdall is heavy, surely a solid case is even heavier? Is there a weight limit for hand luggage? It's been years since I've been through an airport!

OP posts:
Abeli · 24/09/2023 21:36

I'd definitely want 2 x underwear per day. I'd travel home in the same clothes I went in but wouldn't wear them while away. Travelling makes me feel dirty.
However I would wear the same outfit both evenings and just a fresh top for day 2

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:36

Hotel website doesn't say whether they provide toiletries. I'm sure they probably do though. Good call.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 24/09/2023 21:38

I wouldn’t be showering again after work before the evening. Anything like this is normally a very fast turn around between office and evening for me, so drop laptop & maybe touch up make up at best…

4 hrs that includes a stopover isn’t long flights so I wouldn’t have a specific travel outfit.

a case might be heavier but you can wheel it instead of carrying it

Dowtcha · 24/09/2023 21:40

"Struggling to fit all my toiletries/liquids into the tiny 20x20 bag... shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, deodorant, perfume, moisturiser, nasal spray (needed), makeup, toothpaste." I just bring a toothbrush toothpaste and a brush.

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:41

No, the flights aren't long thankfully, but I'm 7 hours from leaving the house to arriving at hotel so I want to be as comfy as possible.

UsingChangeofName · 24/09/2023 21:41

You are over packing.

Wear your jeans and a t-shirt.
Take either the dress or jumpsuit which you can wear for the evenings.
Clean top to go with the jeans for during the day.
I mean, the pants aren't really taking up space or weight however many you take.

EastofNorth · 24/09/2023 21:44

@Dowtcha "I just bring a toothbrush toothpaste and a brush." I have no idea what, if any, toiletries are provided by the hotel.

I suppose I could just buy them at the airport after security though couldn't I?

OP posts:
Hbh17 · 24/09/2023 21:58

Shampoo and shower gel will be provided, so you only need toothbrush/paste and deodorant. And do you really need straighteners?
Book for the plane can go in your handbag.

cherrypied · 24/09/2023 23:26

Also depends on the airline as to what you can takes so you might have a cabin bag and a small personal item which can be up to a good sized ruck sack for work stuff.

If you don't have packing cubes get some!

I'd take
Travel : harems/t shirt/cardigan trainers
Jeans and 2 t shirts/tops
1 dresses or jumpsuit
1 skirt
Thin nightdress
One bra
3 pants (one per 24 after shower)
One coat
One pair footwear
Scarf for flight
Decant Conditioner (use the hotel shower gel and shampoo)
Decant face cream
Travel pack face wipes
Travel size hair oil (hask from boots)
Folding toothbrush and end of a toothpaste tube or travel size one
Some make up decant foundation
Deodorant small roll on one
Hairbrush
Small cross body bag

coxesorangepippin · 24/09/2023 23:29

3 Knicks
3 socks
2 jeans
1 pair comfy pants aka leggings
3 tops
1 sweater/cardy

MaggieFS · 24/09/2023 23:30

That's pretty much what I take.

I use hotel shower gel and shampoo, take my own mini conditioner.

How big is your hold-all? I have a small wheelie case which is within the limits for BA and EasyJet and I can get everything in, including laptop, cable etc.
