Famous (ish) person messaging me

Cat2014 · 23/09/2023 23:48

I have been chatting to someone who is kind of famous not like seriously film actor famous but social influencer. For a worth while cause , loads of followers and been in the news a lot fairly recently etc.
They have added me to a personal chat and we have been messaging and I think getting closer. I however keep thinking is this actually them? Could it be a member of their ‘staff’ just messing about? How can I trust that their messages are real?

I really like this person and I’m worried in case I’m being duped or something. Has anyone got any advice?

I’m overly invested in wanting to know if this is who I think it is…!
has he been in the UK recently promoting his first book?

Is it someone who works with dogs? If so I think it could be real but also a bit odd so I think I’d back off .

Funny, this is who I immediately thought of, not sure why!

Are you a teenager?

Quite

Yettisrus29 · 24/09/2023 09:59

There are an awful lot of fake accounts on Instagram and they won't take them down. I follow a couple of pilots and they're always having fake accounts made in their name who then start messaging their followers.

Pilots are insta-famous??? To the extent that people fake their accounts? Am I thinking about the wrong kind of pilot (is there a different kind)?

Elon Musk used to message me. It definitely wasn't him. I blocked hid account then he set up a new account and messaged me again. I checked and found 27 accounts all pretending to be him. None had blue tick

WaystarRoy · 24/09/2023 10:10

A fake John Simm messaged me. I thought it so unlikely he would want to have one-to one chats with fans it didn’t cross my mind it was real.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 24/09/2023 10:10

A influencer's job is to speak to people on social media.

Most of that communication will just be one off, but they have to do loads of that, it is their job.

They will have extended conversations with:
Other influencers,
People they help out,
People they think may become influencers soon,
This stuff helps them make money

Influencers are also people, they need some sort of friends, they will have a few dozen people they click with and so speak to them a bit more. They are probably not looking for a relationship.
Enjoy your friendship, do not look for a relationship, never send money or dirty pictures.

cuddlebear · 24/09/2023 10:13

Why do you suddenly think it’s a scam? Has he just asked you for money?

ComingtoKent · 24/09/2023 10:16

Have a look at the Twitter account deathtospinach - a woman on a mission to wind up fake celebrities trying to scam her.

QueenBitch666 · 24/09/2023 10:16

I've had a few of these. They were fakes

Cat2014 · 24/09/2023 10:19

They have asked for a donation
I want to make a very small donation for the thing they’re collecting for but I won’t send it how the person messaging me has asked. I’ll send it via official channels and see if they’re ok with that

I met John simm last week. He was filming in Burgess hill. I was walking past as he arrived on set. I had no idea who he was he smiled at us and said hello. I said to my friend. Who is that and he said it said tjohn simm. I then saw the trailers in the car park

Quite

Why, because only teenagers can like famous people?

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 24/09/2023 10:24

It's a scammer OP. They're all over Instagram. I made a comment on a post by (the real) Robson Green (he lives near me) and 'he' then messaged me from his 'private account'. It very clearly wasn't him so I blocked

KitBumbleB · 24/09/2023 10:25

"Elon Musk" messaged me too. This account had a blue tick and hundreds of thousands of followers.
He managed to convince people (not me) that it was his semi secret account. He had a few pics of him relaxing at home and selfies probably taken before he was mega famous so to a more vulnerable eye it could have looked legit.

littleripper · 24/09/2023 10:26

Why send any money - you aren't trying to catch them out - they don't care, they will just keep trying to scam you and the longer you stay in touch the more vulnerable you are. Block. Give money to your charity of choice.

KitBumbleB · 24/09/2023 10:27

Ah ok, yeah OP I assumed at some point they would ask for a donation to their cause.

Sadly it's a scam.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 24/09/2023 10:28

They asked you to send money to them?

You have your answer.

Maybe you should go on their official account and warn other followers and the influencer about this.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/09/2023 10:29

Of course it’s a scam, especially if they’ve asked you for money!

Allofthisisasimulation · 24/09/2023 10:30

They are quite possibly asking lots of people for 'a very small donation', and hoping it will add up. By all means make a donation to a charity close to your heart, if you can afford it, but nothing to do with this person/scammer!

milafawny · 24/09/2023 10:31

email catfish uk, of course its a scam.
