Game of Thrones - worth a watch?

rosesandpetals103 · 23/09/2023 15:24

I’ve never seen it and I feel like I am the only person who hasn’t!

Is it worth a watch? I’ve heard good reviews and my parents have just come back from Dubrovnik where they filmed some of it. Apparently it has increased tourism there by 20% so it must have an appeal!

Is it relatively easy to follow?

Yes, absolutely worth a watch. Just don't bother with anything after the Battle of Winterfell in the last season and make up your own ending, anything can imagine will be better than the rush job dross the producers gave us 🤣

Im on about my 7 thousandth rewatch 😂

Same!
Love it

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/09/2023 16:08

It's amazing! Possibly my favourite series ever. Totally gripping, with great characters. I've watched it 3 times Blush. I am a big fan of fantasy though. I didn't think the ending was shit btw.

Up to season 5 - definitely worth a watch
Seasons 6 and 7 - maybe
Final season - don't waste your time

BearSoFair · 23/09/2023 16:11

Or watch the final season until Someone gets knighted, then stop! Surprise! That was the story all along and everyone lived happily ever after...

Foxymoxy68 · 23/09/2023 16:12

We've just been to Dubrovnik so need to watch it too!

Cowlover89 · 23/09/2023 16:14

Yes

Laiste · 23/09/2023 16:14

Re: the violence rape and nudity ... rumours of this are one of the reasons i never fancied it.

But - although there is a fair bit of it, it's always relevant to the plot. I mean there are loads of films which have sex scenes for no good reason other than to bung an obligatory one in. And people don't seem to mind that.

I think for me because it's all costume fantasy and made up magic lands and kingdoms, it somehow doesn't feel as eyebrow raising as it would, for example, as suddenly seeing full nudity and loads of sex at the back of the caf in East Enders or something.

Darklane · 23/09/2023 16:17

You’re not alone, OP. I’ve never watched it either but wondered why everyone I meet seems to love it.

kitsuneghost · 23/09/2023 16:20

Yes I love it. Also don't understand why everyone thought the ending was so bad. I thought it was good

Notonthestairs · 23/09/2023 16:21

It was officially not my cup of tea but I agreed to watch it to shut DH up.

I was a lot more interested when I realised he'd based huge amounts of plot on medieval history (particularly English & Scottish) and some from Renaissance period.

I thought it was very well made, great character development, interesting plots etc. I thought the earlier series had a lot more graphic sexual violence than later the series.

The tedious moaning about the last episode was worse than the actual episode IMO.

theduchessofspork · 23/09/2023 16:24

Oh for sure.

The quality does tail off, but the acting remains good and you’re invested in the characters, so..

pinkiepie91 · 23/09/2023 16:24

I started watching in spring and was absolutely hooked after a few episodes, like pp I wish I could have it wiped from my memory and watch it again for the 1st time 🐺 love Arya and The Hound, Davos, Brienne, Tormumd, I could go on 😁 watch it!

RuppyDa · 23/09/2023 16:26

Absolutely love GOT, will soon be on 4th rewatch and also didn’t mind the ending ,
as someone rightly says above - the moaning about it was worse! House of the Dragon was equally as good - Matt Smith is so so good in the role he plays , I’m definitely watching that again too. Big huge tick from me ❤️.

Moro93 · 23/09/2023 16:34

I agree with everything @JolteonBolt has said. The ending is as bad as people say it is. I absolutely loved the show and used to get excited waiting for every new season.
The last season was so bad that I have never rewatched since and don’t think I ever could again.

I felt really sunken after the ending because all of that story and development had built to such a disappointing end.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/09/2023 16:37

It had the potential to be the best tv series ever, but boy did they blow it. Definitely worth a watch though, but you have to play close attention, there’s a huge cast and how they are all related to each other matters.

MrsBungle · 23/09/2023 16:43

It’s a brilliant series. I found it a bit difficult to get in to at first but then I really got in to it. I’ve rewatched it a lot and notice new things all the time!

Esgaroth · 23/09/2023 16:44

I thought it was rubbish but I stopped after the first series. I read the first 4 books because I was going out with a guy who was obsessed with them and I just thought they were terrible.

Definitely worth a try, though - they're so popular that I suppose it's likely you'd enjoy them. If you like boobs you're in for a treat anyway.

RichardArmitagesWife · 23/09/2023 16:53

The first four series are fantastic, although gut-churningly violent, full of nudity, plenty of rape.

Five is good but not great, Six often rather dull, Seven pretty bad, Eight dreadful.

lemmein · 23/09/2023 16:55

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2023 15:54

Do you like that genre? I've not watched it because I don't like sci fi/fantasy, which is the category it appears to fall into, judging by the snippets I've seen when DP has watched it.

No point sitting through hours of something you don't like just so you don't feel like you're not the only person who hasn't seen it, because you aren't at all.

And I say that as as someone who falls into a very small group (scientists who don't like sci fi, it seems like there are almost none of us).

I normally hate the sci-fi/fantasy genre but really enjoyed GoT (apart from the last season!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/09/2023 17:01

DH is rewatching it ( again ) he's just getting to end end of Series 7 but he's determined to plough through Series 8 . Several hours of his life he won't get back though...

No Spoilers but :

Joffrey is a little shit
Ramsey is worse , pure evil
You can keep Drogo I much prefer Viserys who isn't nice but has a certain something about him (the voice maybe)

The horses who got acting parts were really badly adviced by their agents .

Loved The Hound .

CheshireCat1 · 23/09/2023 17:06

It’s a fantasy loosely based on the Wars of the Roses. I thought the first series was the best and the last was a let down. Then again the end of the Wars of the Roses was a bit of a let down too.

dikwad · 23/09/2023 17:44

Game of thrones is the best thing that has ever or will ever be on the television. I absolutely love everything about it.

Purrrrrdy · 23/09/2023 17:51

GOT is in my top 3 despite the poor ending, everything that goes before more than makes up for it.
I was late to I watch it and it took me 3 tries but after 2-3 episodes of season 1 that was it.
I watched seasons 1-7 back to back. Then later season 8.

Then my husband got into it so watched it all again.

Watched it for a 3rd time earlier in the year.

Might watch it again this winter.

JolteonBolt · 23/09/2023 17:53

HotApplePiePunch · 23/09/2023 16:04

What JolteonBolt said basically.

The ending was so bad I can't yet re-watch and despite hearing how good House of the Dragon is - set earlier in world - I won't watch till it's done.

Sky still has it - not sure where else.

Yeah I can’t cope with anyone defending that ending. Not even the shock twist, but how the world is left at the end.

to use a Star Wars analogy as to not give away any spoilers- it was as if Princess Leia and Hans Solo become joint leaders of the new republic, with Chewbacca as the military leader, Jar Jar Binks as Secretary of State for space health, Boba Fett as a space diplomat and Luke Skywalker as a special Jedi grand master. All living on a spaceship happily ever after. Zero nuance. Complete unwanted fan service. Just stupid, stupid television.
