Game of Thrones - worth a watch?

rosesandpetals103 · 23/09/2023 15:24

I’ve never seen it and I feel like I am the only person who hasn’t!

Is it worth a watch? I’ve heard good reviews and my parents have just come back from Dubrovnik where they filmed some of it. Apparently it has increased tourism there by 20% so it must have an appeal!

Is it relatively easy to follow?

Yes. Yes. Yes!

TheZeppo · 23/09/2023 15:28

Im on about my 7 thousandth rewatch 😂

Hermittrismegistus · 23/09/2023 15:29

The ending is truly crap.

If you have never seen it, yes- but it diminishes in quality past season 5 in a big way. I have never rewatched since the series finale because it was lowest-common-denominator, stupid TV.

Without spoilers- you become accustomed to clever plots, a-ha moments, great character development and time passing at a ‘natural’ pace as people travel across a continent on a horse at a snail’s pace. Then suddenly- things are happening at a lightning speed, characters do stupid things that aren’t aligned to their story arc and teleport across castles.

But it’s worth it for the first four seasons in particular. It starts getting ropey at 5, but still passable with some great cinematic moments. Season 6 ok, great effects and ‘moments’. Season 7, a complete bonfire that makes zero sense.

I’m a book reader, but not a huge purist. However even with seeing the show as a standalone product, the ending is just ludicrous. People will tie themselves in knots trying to explain its brilliance, but it is dogshit.

I’m actually jealous of you getting to enjoy the first few seasons again with fresh, virgin eyes. It was fab. I just couldn’t ever rewatch again.

go for it!

dontforgetme · 23/09/2023 15:35

Hell yes!

rosesandpetals103 · 23/09/2023 15:48

How do I watch it?

Talltall · 23/09/2023 15:52

@rosesandpetals103

yes

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2023 15:54

Do you like that genre? I've not watched it because I don't like sci fi/fantasy, which is the category it appears to fall into, judging by the snippets I've seen when DP has watched it.

No point sitting through hours of something you don't like just so you don't feel like you're not the only person who hasn't seen it, because you aren't at all.

And I say that as as someone who falls into a very small group (scientists who don't like sci fi, it seems like there are almost none of us).

TodayInahurry · 23/09/2023 15:55

The sets were amazing, many good actors, to start great storylines, great costumes. However I found it too violent to watch.

user1471556818 · 23/09/2023 15:55

Absolutely yes but ending is awful it's currently on sky
I'm rewatching from the start currently and seeing bit I had missed before .

PickledFox · 23/09/2023 15:57

Too many rape scenes. It ought to be banned.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 23/09/2023 15:59

Yes definitely worth a watch.
Winter is coming.....

AuntieMarys · 23/09/2023 16:00

It's incredible. We are going to rewatch it at the end of the month, with subtitles on.

JolteonBolt · 23/09/2023 16:00

rosesandpetals103 · 23/09/2023 15:48

How do I watch it?

It should be on Now TV, on the Sky Atlantic channel.

there is a spin off called ‘house of the dragon’ which is based on lore from the same universe- don’t get confused with that as they have made the logos similar. I have really enjoyed house of the dragon so far though- the novella it is based on is great.

I don't think it's sci fi at all! It's a political drama with the odd dragon thrown in

Why must we ban everything? You can simply choose not to watch. 🙄

OP, it’s brilliant. I’m so jealous that you get to watch it for the first time! ☺️

Hibernatalie · 23/09/2023 16:02

Oh yeah definitely. I'm not a fan of fantasy and I loved it. Give the first episode a go and see what you think. Im actually jealous you get to watch it for the first time

bemorebernard · 23/09/2023 16:03

Best thing on tv in last 10 years- yes from me ! I watched everyone twice

HotApplePiePunch · 23/09/2023 16:04

What JolteonBolt said basically.

The ending was so bad I can't yet re-watch and despite hearing how good House of the Dragon is - set earlier in world - I won't watch till it's done.

Sky still has it - not sure where else.

PickledFox · 23/09/2023 15:57

This! I was truly shocked by the rape Seneca and switched off. The main actor said she felt very pressurised to do these scenes and wishes she’d said no.

Laiste · 23/09/2023 16:06

Yeah do it OP.

Me and DH thought WE were the only ones left in the world who hadn't watched it around this time last year.

We weren't going to watch it (determined not to in fact) but were coming out of a binge watch of The Sopranos for the first time (another one we were never going to watch) and were desperate for a series to get our teeth into.

Loved it.
Wish we could have our brains wiped and watch again!

Re: shit ending - didn't bother me much. When you watch the whole series in one go it's not too jarring. Those who waited for a year for the ending (DD2 for eg) felt hard done by.

somethinghastochangesoon · 23/09/2023 16:07

Ooohh I'm so jealous you are getting to watch it for the first time. I was a bit "I won't like it I'm not into dragons and stuff like that" but the dragons are one of the best bits!

I hope you love it 😍

bemorebernard · 23/09/2023 16:07

PickledFox · 23/09/2023 15:57

Too many rape scenes. It ought to be banned.

It's relevant to,the story and as a rape victim I get truly pissed off with people telling me as a grown adult what I can watch .
Go away , if it offends don't watch

JamSandle · 23/09/2023 16:07

I couldn't watch all the rape and sex.

HangingByYourFingernails · 23/09/2023 16:07

I've just been randomly rewatching season 2 for the first time in forever and am struck by
a) how amazingly rich the plot is - I remembered it all as being slow burn but there's a huge quantity of plot per episode.
b) how gratuitous and exploitative the nudity is

Not one to watch with the family.
