If you have a mini (car)...

What do you think of it!

I currently have an Audi TT which is costing me way too much monthly and isn't suitable any more for what I need.

Considering a mini but I don't know where to start! So, if you have one, what do you think?

Are they fun? Spacious enough? I'd love to know! 😌😌

I have a Mini Cooper automatic at the moment. It’s a good enough drive but there are two things I really don’t like. One is that it has a huge turning circle for a car of
it’s size and the indicators don’t self
cancel well. Other than that it’s an ok, reliable small car.

Completely disagree with this.
I've a 20 year old Cooper S that is still a dream to drive, solid steering, no play in the gear stick and looks like it's only a few years old.
Also drove a new Countryman for the last 4 years and the build quality feels just as good.

Same! I've had my Cooper S coupe for 8 years now and not a single problem (apart from a tendency for my neighbours to reverse into it grrr). Looks immaculate still and drives beautifully. Every tradesmen who comes to my building tells me what a "nice little sports car" it is and I get regular offers to buy it from me.

I've had a mini and a TT.

The TT was more spacious and had a great build quality, nice tailored seats. The mini felt like we would die if anyone hit us in the back. Barely a full weeks shipping would fit in the boot. TT had a large boot in comparison.

The mini is a bit rough and ready. I loved the LED lighting and felt quite funky in mine which I've never had before. I regularly (twice a year) had to top oil up but it always told me to add a litre so good in that respect. DD always moaned she had no space to breathe in the back and to be fair to her, her legs were squished behind my seat.

I liked it and would consider a clubman if I had another because the 3dr hatch was impossibly tiny and impractical.

It's a tiny car
It's fast
You don't have to believe it lol

I don’t need to believe it, I know exactly what the performance is like. Fast it isn’t.

Does it matter? She clearly loves her car and feels it’s fast for her.

Your little snipes are making you look a bit of a dick tbh.

Hbh17 · 27/09/2023 11:53

Love it - I'm on my 2nd. My last one was hit from behind on a motorway, but they are so well built and robust that I walked away with just a few bruises. Other small(er) cars feel like biscuit tins by comparison.

@Jayneisagirlsname
When you change to a higher car I can thoroughly recommend a Suzuki Vitara. I absolutely love mine. It's fun to drive, easy to handle, great visibility and you can see over hedges...

Grow up. It might not be as fast as a newer TT with 400 odd brake or a golf R but it is quick and has more bhp than most cars that are twice the size.

If you want to show off that 220 isn't fast enough for your little petrol head self, well... we don't care! 220 (I thought it was 225) is good, is fast and most petrol heads love a TT.

I've been driving since 1997, and I'm on my third BMW model, after owning an original 1987 mini. I've had a two door Mini One, a Countryman and now have a four door Mini One. I can't see me ever driving anything else. Comfortable, reliable, ample space for me (okay, I'm only 5'3"!) and my two children (we use my husbands car if we need to take luggage or anything with us).

Insurance is cheap, lowest level of car tax, fuel coats are as low as it gets. Maintenance will be high if you use a BMW garage, but parts themselves are very cheap, if you find a decent garage with experience with them, any work will be minimal expense. My current one is coming up 9 years old, and still runs beautifully. The only issue I've had in that time was a software issue with the entrainment system. :)

Yarple · 28/09/2023 12:38

To add, someone drove into the back of my 2001 model, and my car just had a couple of scratches, whereas her much bigger saloon car crumpled at the front, so I believe they're pretty sturdy too.

is that the mini 5 door hatch?

poopoolala · 24/01/2024 17:25

Mini Cooper Clubman. Love it. Plenty of boot space, split rear seats if you need more. Dh is 6ft 3in & built like a brick outhouse. Even he was comfortable in the back.
Fun to drive. It is a "firm" ride though. Mine is 2008 & still drives like a dream. No annoying squeaks or rattles. Well built.

Insurance pretty cheap. Has the stop/start (which can be turned off) so road tax is £20 per year.

@CoffeeBeansGalore

can the on/off be switched OFF until someone wants to turn it back on? Or does it go back on when you switch the car on?

@Yarple

they 'crumple' as a safety for passengers thing. Removing the damage done by impact to people to the car panels.

I love my mini convertible. It's more than 10 years old and super reliable.

MariePaperRoses · 23/09/2023 15:46

I wouldn't have a mini after a colleague, a young woman not long after getting married was killed in a car crash and the engine was pushed into her lap.

Crushed to death.

@MariePaperRoses I'm very sorry to hear about the young woman.

obviously it's your prerogative never to have a mini, but it's really not down to it having been a mini.

i have a similar thing about mondeos someone driving one killed my Uncle. The mention of them makes me feel like vomiting, it's an extreme reaction. It wasn't down to the car in this case either.

suki1964 · 24/01/2024 17:51

Second Mini Countryman for me, and I love it

Loads of space in it, 4, not very small adults and luggage drove Northern Ireland to Whitby, not a problem, loads of leg room and boot space

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 24/01/2024 17:53

I love my pre-loved mini, it's 12 yrs old, cream with a black soft top.
I got it as a runaround as my other vehicle is a VW campervan.
The only downside for me is the boot, it's really small but I put the roof down and pile stuff on the backseat.
It's quite economical, parts are not too expensive, it's nippy and easy to park as there's basically no back end, I'd definitely buy another one.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 24/01/2024 17:54

Oh and it's a John Cooper works

RubiesandRose · 24/01/2024 18:13

I am on my 3rd mini countryman, my latest is a plug in hybrid and a really smooth ride, I absolutely love it but I will say the majority of minis are a hard ride and if that's important to you, it may not be the car for you.
