I really like Welsh Blankets. Do you have a Welsh Blanket?

I've hankered after one ever since I stayed in a cottage in Wales and they had Welsh blankets on the beds.
Aren't they gorgeous?
I'm going to treat myself to one but how do I choose just one??!

I've got several inherited from my gran. I'm afraid to say the dogs sleep on them, they're too scratchy for me!

CakesOnAPlane · 22/09/2023 15:26

I understand of course that some people may be sensitive to wool and the old ones certainly don't feel 'soft' but I don't really get the itchy/scratchy thing. If it's cold enough for me to want to snuggle under it on the sofa I'm wearing long sleeves/trousers anyway and if it's on the bed there's a duvet between us.
Thank goodness we don't all like the same thing or they'd be even more expensive!

Melin Tregwynt is definitely worth a visit. I love going there. The whole experience is great. The noise of the looms, seeing a fabric being made, the shop and the sample pieces you can pick up, and the cafe is lovely too.

I have a few blankets and throws.

If you sign up with them each month you get an email and there is normally a 30% off offer on a colourway or style.

I am Welsh. I have one that was a wedding present to my parents in 1955. There’s nothing like it over the duvet on a really cold night.

LadyMargaretDevereux · 22/09/2023 17:51

I had a small obsession with Welsh blankets a few years ago, kicked off after a visit to Melin Tregwynt Mill, I think. I collected at least 10 from various sources, mainly Ebay. The obsession passed in the end but I still have a modern Tregwynt one (purple spotty) an orange traditional double sided, and a lovely cream, pale green and lavender traditional. I might also have a few smaller ones here and a poor felted and stained one I took pity on (incorrectly washed by someone before i owned it) and there, but I love them all. I usually have one out at a time, then rotate.

I have four of these I inherited from my grandmother. They go on the guest bed twice a year when I have winter visitors, and otherwise sit sadly in a drawer. If I put them into regular use my husband would spill curry/coffee/baked beans all over them.

BestIsWest · 22/09/2023 18:08

We have a couple that have been handed down over the generations. I have no idea how old they are but they are threadbare in patches. My g-g-g- grandfather was a wool weaver so I like to think he had a hand in them.

simonthedog · 22/09/2023 18:11

I have two, an old one and a new one. Try Home (jen-jones.com) or Blankets and Throws– Welsh Otter who also have a lovely shop in Tenby.

I love them. We have quite a few from our local Mill https://www.solvawoollenmill.co.uk/

Thosesummernights · 22/09/2023 18:12

Hate to tell you though, they also do gorgeous rugs!

MrsCarson · 22/09/2023 18:18

I like the look of them n the back of a couch or across the bottom of a bed, but the wool makes me itch. I did get some place mat sized ones and drinks coasters made out of a nice piece of the wool It came from Trefriw woolen mills shop near us.

Oh I love the stories of the generational blankets. What a wonderful connection.
I'm seriously thinking of booking a half term trip to Wales to go to one of these mills.
Then I can feel them and choose one in person.
Rugs, you say? Off to look some more..

I love mine. I have 5. All got from ebay ages ago. All lovely condition and dry cleaned annually. As soon as the weather turns proper winter they go on top of the quilt. It;s the best sleep like a weighted blanked. I wouldnt have them next to skin as the wool is too itchy

Iamlikesorry · 22/09/2023 19:58

Mine's from Melin Tregwynt - I love it and no one is allowed to touch it. Its lambswool, very light and soft. I'm starting to develop a mild textiles obsession...

Ohhhh, that sounds like a lovely colour scheme. Got a link to where you bought it from?

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 22/09/2023 20:28

I have a yellow and green Melin Tregwynt wool blanket, which I use as a throw on the back of the sofa.

But my prized possession is my granny’s purple, green and white (think Wimbledon colours) which I use in the spare room at the top of the (poorly insulated) house in the winter. Not to everybody’s taste, I’m sure, but it’s incredibly heavy and warm, and it was my granny’s so.

Davros · 22/09/2023 21:02

I've got one that belonged to my mum and dad in the 60s. I remember it well from my childhood

Carbonicalloy · 22/09/2023 21:10

I have a king-size one from MT, a 'big' birthday present from my mum a few years ago. Look forward to getting it out each winter to put on the bed, makes the whole room feel cosy.

mistermagpie · 22/09/2023 21:11

We've got a green one with white sheep on it, which I love. It's really itchy though to be fair so I don't actually use it for anything!

LBOCS2 · 22/09/2023 21:20

I have a green one from Welsh Otter which sits on the end of our bed for warmth from October-April each year.

I inherited a carthen from DMum but I put the belongings of hers I wanted to keep into storage until we moved house and it unfortunately burned down. So I used some of my inheritance to replace it. I love it, and in truth the colourway suits me a little better than the extremely bright red of the inherited blanket!

Pashazade · 22/09/2023 21:23

We have one that is my go to "it's bloody cold in here" on top of the duvet blanket, the weight is perfect!

Labbingtons · 22/09/2023 21:23

I love them!

We have two new one bought on holiday on Wales which are lovely muted herringbone patterns and look perfect, as I love farmhouse styles (and live in a farmhouse)

We also have one that was a wedding gift for my DH’s grandparents, from his Welsh great grandparents, so it must be from the thirties. It’s not fashionable, but is beautifully crafted and lives on the end of a guest bed.

BBno4 · 22/09/2023 21:27

If you want warmth and comfort you need to try the blanket in a bag. I am wrapped up in one right now and in the winter they are warmer than a duvet.
