When did your child start sleeping in their own bed?

My son (3 years old) is sleeping in his own room for the first time tonight.

Not because I asked him to, because he wants to.....he's especially fascinated with a moon lamp next to his bed.

So far we've slept in a double bed together.

It's bitter sweet to have him "move out".... so my question is, when did your little one start sleeping on their own?

From birth - own room and own bed.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/09/2023 21:54

From a couple months, once they stopped night feeds - but I didn't completely co-sleep they had a mattress beside mine.

I don't enjoy sleeping with other people so I couldn't have tolerated it.

Mysleepisbroken · 21/09/2023 21:55

Both (4&6) have been in and out like yoyos. Technically they both went into their own rooms at 6m, and there have been times when they've slept in their alone for many months at a time. We've also had then coming into our room, or us sleeping on a mattress next to them in theirs. We've had pretty much every combination and its not stopped.yet.

DD1 went into her own room at about 6 months, but was in and out until probably about 4. DD2 would still be in our bed every night if we let her go to sleep in it. But she does go to sleep in her own room (as long as one of us sits in there until she is asleep). I have just realised that she's only come into our bed in the night once this month. So I think she basically sleeps in her own bed and it has taken until she was 8 to get there.

MuckyPlucky · 21/09/2023 22:07

Own room from 6 weeks for both of them. Never had a problem, both always loved their rooms & going to sleep by themselves, & neither of them have ever wanted to sleep in my bed.

Seeline · 21/09/2023 22:10

Ours were in our room until 6 months but always in their basket or cot. Remained in their cit/bed when they moved to their own rooms. They never slept in our bed.

Thethruththewholetruth · 21/09/2023 22:13

Mine have always, Moses basket until they grew out of it at 4/5 months then into a cot and then a bed. They have never got into my bed really unless for a morning cuddle

KnittedCardi · 21/09/2023 22:16

From about two weeks. In a carry cot but the carry cot put in the main cot. Kept them cosy when they were little but then they were used to being in there when they got too big for that. Naps in there too, unless out in the garden.

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 21/09/2023 22:17

DD is 4 in December. She starts in her bed at 7pm, wakes up around 10-12 and comes in and climbs in our bed. Will occasionally stay in her bed all night.

She "moved in" to her room at 3.5

TheNoodlesIncident · 21/09/2023 22:17

Mine was in his Moses basket by my bed for the first few months, but we moved him to his own room and cot at about five months. He'd slept through the night from about 8 weeks (sorry!) so it wasn't too stressful.

He's never really come into my bed, a couple of times I've put him there because he wasn't well and was full of fever, other times I stayed in his other bunk instead.

Sometimes he would come and join me in my bed to watch videos on my phone together before he went to bed, but he rarely does that now <sob>

Hope all goes well for you tonight

Alsogoingtogetslated · 21/09/2023 22:21

9 and still in with me. I can’t be the only one surely?

SpongeBob2022 · 21/09/2023 22:22

6 months...safe sleep guidance at the time was same room until 6 months and I'll admit I'm fairly anxious so this is what I followed.

Used various formations of the cot bed until proper bed at 4 (again...exactly 4...as per health and safety suggestion!).

DS never slept in bed with us (again I was nervous and followed guidelines in this respect...there's a theme here!). He's never really wanted or needed to since having his own room / being old enough for it to be safe anyway.

Esgaroth · 21/09/2023 22:22

Always in a cot, never in our bed. Older one was moved into her own room at 11 months (because we didn't have another room for her before that) and younger one at 6 months.

I can't relax properly with a baby in the room and I wouldn't sleep a wink with one in the actual bed.

YoongiMarryMe · 21/09/2023 22:22

2y for the eldest and 14y for the younger.

WhatAPalaverer · 21/09/2023 22:23

They need to be in the same room as mum for the first six months to reduce the cot death risk. Bedside cot is a great way for everyone to have their own space but still be able to breastfeed easily. Mine were in a different room at 18 months and 9 months.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 21/09/2023 22:27

Dc 1 was quite big and outgrew the Moses basket quickly so went into the cot in the other room by about 4 months - there was no space for it in our room.

Dc 2 was smaller and we had a slightly bigger room by then so stayed with us for a year.

Mine went into his own room the day we came home from hospital. There wasn't the guidance that they should be in with you back then and his room was next door and we could hear him. I had a chair in there to feed him and he went straight down afterwards. Because it was always his room he didn't know any different when we switched the cot to a bed and therefore there weren't ever any problems at bed time. Worked for all 3.

This. It was never suggested suggested a baby slept in the same room and same bed was a def no no. DC2 slept downstairs as it was warmer ( born midwinter, no heating upstairs, ) Slept 6 hours at night from a week old.

Chickpea17 · 21/09/2023 22:30

In their own cot/beds since birth but we moved out the nursery back into our own bedroom when she was around 9 months. She will be 5 Monday

crostini · 21/09/2023 22:39

Own room from one. Own proper bed from 2. Now at three she sleeps with me.

2nd dc is over one and still sleeps in cot next to my bed.

It all just depends on the child and the lifestyle of the moms. They also go through different phases of wanting to be close or wanting to be 'big kids' for example.

mrsed1987 · 21/09/2023 22:42

18 months, he slept in our bedroom in his cot before that. He slept through from 10 weeks so I didn't want to ruin that! (It didn't thankfully!)

Tinybrother · 21/09/2023 22:45

Mine have their own beds but about every other night one of them comes in with me in the middle of the night. I love it and I will miss it when they stop, they are lovely to sleep next to and don’t disturb me now that they are older. Eldest is mid primary age

You aren't the only one

Kaffiene · 21/09/2023 22:53

DC1 about 8 months but Dc2 is a completely different kettle of fish. Never managed to get him in a cot, he screamed and screamed unless he was next to me. Still here at nearly 6. I assume he will move out at some point 🤞🤞

Delatron · 21/09/2023 22:56

From a couple of weeks old. We were in a small flat and the room was next door. Doors open so no need for a monitor.

rickandmorts · 21/09/2023 22:58

Baby is 9 months and in our bed. I never want her to go in her own room 🥺 love having her near.
