Why do hairdressers offer you tea or coffee

I remember my mother tksing me to a hairdresser when I was small and my mother was offered tea. The offering of tea/coffee/refreshments happemed a few times since then.

There was a time when I stopped going to hairdressers and so I forgot about it. But I and an appointment last week and I was offered tea/coffee. I declinced because I was only there for a short time (wash and cut and blow-dry and also I had my bottle of water there with me).

I could understand the offering of tea or coffee for a long service if one will be there for a few hours but for a short service like a wash and blow-dry or for a cut, wash and blow - it's only really about 50 minutes.

It's just something I was pondering about.

Wish mine did. I was there for 4 hours 😢

Fantina · 21/09/2023 17:07

I think it’s to make it into an ‘experience’ but I hate going, I’m fussy about my drinks and so I never accept.

SpottyDoll · 21/09/2023 17:07

😥 that is so sad. I would have presumed someone in for a long service might get offered some refreshments.
I went in for a wash and cut last week and as I was sitting down the question of refreshments was spring on me and I wasn't expecting it.

Because it's polite, seen as an extra little touch to their service?

VeridicalVagabond · 21/09/2023 17:09

Mine offers tea, coffee, prosecco or a G&T. I've never wondered why, I presume just because you're going to be sat there a while might be nice to have a drink.

TeaKitten · 21/09/2023 17:09

Because it’s just nice isn’t it, some people like it and if you don’t you don’t have to take it. It’s just friendly customer service.

Making it an experience makes sense.

I'm the same, I am very fussy about my tea and coffee and I like it a particular way.

It's just a welcoming gesture. Although I always feel like there's a bit of an art to drinking it when someone is messing about with your hair, so I only accept if I am having a colour treatment or will be sat there for a while.

PurpleChrayne · 21/09/2023 17:11

What a bizarre thing to take the hump about!

Ragwort · 21/09/2023 17:11

I think it's great customer service, I went to the hairdresser yesterday and had a very good cup of coffee, exactly how I like it, proper coffee machine, hot milk on the side as requested. And a biscuit Grin. I was having a 'model' session so no charge. (And was offered a second cup).
When I went at Christmas I was offered mulled wine and mince pie (again no charge for the hair cut).
I went to a different hairdresser a few weeks ago, during the very hot weather and was not even offered a glass of water.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 21/09/2023 17:12

It’s a nice touch. However IME the coffee tends to be weak and watery stuff, and the biscuit one of those Biscoff fingers that I lose interest in after the first bite.

SuddenlyISee · 21/09/2023 17:12

Mine offer drinks and I often decline but it's a nice gesture. Although I did have a 6.5 hour appointment when I was 39 weeks pregnant (big mistake) and my hairdresser did go out and get me some lunch!

Exactly, I went to he hairdressers and how rude, they offered me a drink!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/09/2023 17:13

Mine offers tea, coffee and digestive biscuits, and very nice it is too. I'm also fussy about my tea (builders) and she makes it just right. It's a nice little gesture that she appreciates my custom.

AthenaPopodopolous · 21/09/2023 17:13

Because you are treated like a guest in the salon and it’s to offer a sense of being valued as more than just a client. Also it helps you feel more comfortable when you have a cold wet head.

But hairdressers make the best tea.

LollipopChaos · 21/09/2023 17:14

I find I can never drink the bloody thing because you feel awkward to lean forward to drink it, or if you hold it hair goes in it lol.

Also old hairdresser used to charge for the service, but new one doesn't.

God that’s brilliant. I think getting mildly pissed is a very effective way to counteract the boredom and neckache of a long trip to the hairdressers.

readbooksdrinktea · 21/09/2023 17:15

I get hot chocolate. It's nice.

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/09/2023 17:16

I always decline because I can’t work out when you’re meant to drink it. I mean, if you’re having a cut and blow dry there’s basically no time when the hairdresser isn’t actually doing your hair and it seems really rude to keep bending forwards to drink it and stopping her from working.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 21/09/2023 17:19

My appointment is always early in the morning. I am delighted to be given a cup of coffee after all the packed-lunches-where's-my-homework-school-run mayhem.

Aparecium · 21/09/2023 17:20

Always seems very weird to me. Worth all those little hair clippings flying around, the last thing I want to do is eat or drink - yuck!

momonpurpose · 21/09/2023 17:21

Mine serves bottled water and snacks. I never have had the snacks but it's a nice touch

skyeisthelimit · 21/09/2023 17:23

Ours offers it if you have to sit around waiting for hair to develop etc, but not if you are just in for a trim/wash & blowdry.

It's quite nice to have a coffee while waiting half an hour for my highlights to be done.

Wexone · 21/09/2023 17:23

it's a nice service. my place has a very fancy nepresso machine and offer all types. it's just a shame I don't drink tea or coffee 😅 I did get processco when it was my cut and colour for my wedding. I normally get water or bring hot chocolate with me
my little annoyance is though if you get a glass of water you dint get a biscuit. why its it only tea or coffee that gets the biscuit ?? 😕😅
