To be fair, those cheese counters do look a lot better than the last time I was in the US (which was before covid), but they're still not great. They look fine. And the pp is right, the UK didn't traditionally have a brilliant selection readily and cheaply available either. But I didn't always live in the UK and I'm used to a wider selection.

ASGIRC · 20/09/2023 14:46

I only put butter on toast.
Not on any other kind of sandwich. I dont put mayo in sandwiches either, unless it is part of the filling (like a tuna mayo)

VeridicalVagabond · 20/09/2023 14:46

Godless heathens

Tangled123 · 20/09/2023 14:47

I’m more disturbed by the idea of olive oil in sandwiches. I didn’t know that was a thing until this thread but it seems vile.

littlebirdieblu · 20/09/2023 14:49

Never butter sandwiches, always mayo, hummus or chilli jam. Toast and crumpets though...lashings of butter!!

Boomboom22 · 20/09/2023 14:53

Do they even have real bread to start with? Everything seems wrong in USA, chocolate, butter, bread all just fake upf.
Obviously real bread needs butter if for a packed lunch, as everyone says the bread would go soggy within 15 mins without it.

I was the odd one out in my family growing up as I hate butter in sandwiches! I can have it on toast by itself or with marmite but not anything else. It makes me feel ill when I see it mixing with things in the sandwich or on toast. Sometimes makes me think of pus.

I love butter and am going to have to work very hard to block out this image😖

Soubriquet · 20/09/2023 14:57

I can only eat butter on toast, or in a bread roll from a particular shop, that is butter only. I thought I was weird but it’s nice to see on here I’m not

How on earth can anyone have a crisp butty without buttering the bread first, or a chip butty for that matter.

Well, this is not an issue with Americans because, as a general rule, we don't eat potato sandwiches.

Boomboom22 · 20/09/2023 14:59

OK wallaw, chlorinated chicken? Food standards laws? Being able to buy melatonin in the vitamin aisle? Yes USA has serious food issues.

Abhannmor · 20/09/2023 14:59

Or bread.Their butter is shyte anyway . Ditto milk . And chocolate. Root beer is a guilty pleasure though.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/09/2023 14:59

How very dare you impune our cultural hertiage! To double carb is to be British. 😆

Boomboom22 · 20/09/2023 15:00

Seriously though, in France you can't get sandwich bread so eat lovely baguettes, does the USA have sandwich bread like we do? Or is it all brioche loaves?

CarolinaInTheMorning · 20/09/2023 15:02

The best bread for sandwiches is Cuban bread, which we have in abundance in my neck of the woods. It makes great toast, too.

everetting · 20/09/2023 15:03

I don't put butter in sandwiches and have never met anyone else who does the same. The fillings can easily slide out though without butter or mayonnaise to hold it in place.

D1nopawus · 20/09/2023 15:03

Helendegenerate · 20/09/2023 12:43

The last time I bought butter or any type of spread was,er, many years ago!. I really can't remember. Toast with a thin layer of marmalade doesn't need butter and any sandwiches with tuna will have a touch of cottage cheese to stop the filling falling out. Baked potatoes don't see butter either. There are always healthier alternatives to make them delicious.

There is a jar of peanut butter in my fridge though and I have this occasionally.

I know it's not the point of the thread, but how on earth do you spread peanut butter that's been in the fridge?

C152 · 20/09/2023 15:04

I'm not American and I never put butter (or mayo, or any other spread) on sandwiches.

kidsandpuppies · 20/09/2023 15:05

English Canadians do, French Canadians don't.

WongWifi · 20/09/2023 15:06

I'd gag without butter. It would be too dry!

Soubriquet · 20/09/2023 15:08

They don't even butter hot dog rolls before adding the sausage and condiments, so never experience the essential melting butter.

What?!!!!! People butter their hotdogs?! Ewww

CarolinaInTheMorning · 20/09/2023 15:08

By the way, if anyone is looking for sandwich ideas, the best thing to put on cucumber sandwiches is a light layer of boursin.

Windseven · 20/09/2023 15:10

Oh come on they clearly don’t do sandwiches properly, do they?

They call hamburgers sandwiches FFS

BanjoMango · 20/09/2023 15:12

I feel like so many sandwiches would be dry without butter/margarine/ mayo/ some liquid layer

Waffle78 · 20/09/2023 15:12

I always butter sandwiches tastes dry without.

Waffle78 · 20/09/2023 15:15

I remember Yorkshire peach (Lisa Dollan) mentioning about not buttering. Just mayo but she said they have squeezable spread. Don't think they have decent butter accross the pond. Unless they go to a farmer's market.
