Apparently malt vinegar on chips (fries) isn't a thing either. Or baked beans with breakfast - so I discovered on my recent trip to Montana.

I would put vinegar on chip shop chips but not fries.

I have mayonnaise with fries but wouldn't with chip shop chips.

So as a rule Americans don't use butter for sandwiches but would use something else depending on the filling?

Don't a lot of people do that now?

PurpleMonkeys · 20/09/2023 15:17

Something sprang to mind a little minute ago whilst I was contemplating tea tonight.

If they don't butter sarnies.. when they have chips for tea, don't they have bread and butter? Is it just bread? What about a batch? Don't they butter them for a chip batch neither?

Same regarding the chips

Don't think they have decent butter accross the pond. Unless they go to a farmer's market.

We have a good choice of imported butter. Farmer's market butter may not be much better than what you can buy in the grocery store. A lot depends on the quality of milk they use and that often depends on what the cows are fed.

Do they even have real bread to start with? Everything seems wrong in USA, chocolate, butter, bread all just fake upf.
Obviously real bread needs butter if for a packed lunch, as everyone says the bread would go soggy within 15 mins without it.

No, there's no real bread in the US.

FFS.

Butter stops the filling making the bread soggy, absolutely delicious too 😋

That's what I thought. Never heard of not buttering/margarining except when on a diet and replace with low fat mayo - acceptable but not as tasty as butter.

MIL puts butter on her scone first with jam and cream and that makes me feel a bit queasy

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 20/09/2023 15:25

Bread, butter and Marmite. Only time I ever butter bread here. It's just a distraction from whatever is filling my sandwich. (British)

Ineedwinenow · 20/09/2023 15:26

Some of you spread olive oil straight onto a sandwich instead of butter? Obviously I do know you have bread with oil and balsamic to dip it in but I genuinely didn’t realise people use it as an alternative to butter? I understand butter melts and goes into liquid but doesn’t oil well taste olive oily
and go make everything slippery ? It’s quite a strong taste too so doesn’t it overpower everything?

Everyday is a school day!!!

Butter on everything, even butter with peanutbutter.

This.

That link don't have any proper bread on it, just poncey bread that middle class people buy.

Proper bread is white like paper, medium sliced and lasts about a fortnight cause of all the chemicals in it.

HappyPurrrsday · 20/09/2023 15:26

Grim. I'd rather not have a sandwich.

My husband doesn't always have butter. He's perfectly happy with a bit of almost stale bread, a bit of ham and some mustard. Yak.

Only sandwich I wouldn't want butter with is bacon. Cus you only need a good dollop of ketchup with that.

BookishBabe · 20/09/2023 15:28

I'm English and don't like butter on my sandwiches.
Always had salad cream to keep it from being dry.

WellPlaced · 20/09/2023 15:28

That’s because they already have 4 other dressings and 3 cheeses ime

Oh no!

Until you have had some non pasteurised/raw cultured butter you don't know what good butter is.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/09/2023 15:29

People who don’t butter sandwiches are animals.

I haven’t seen a MN gavel in ages it I can feel one coming on

<gavel>

loislovesstewie · 20/09/2023 15:31

I'm also partial to Jersey milk on my cereal/ to make my porridge.

MonumentalLentil · 20/09/2023 15:35

I have just remembered that phrase 'A cunt for the butter' anyone else been here since then?

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 20/09/2023 15:39

Is it true Americans don’t have multi Packets of crisps?! Just the family sharing ones?

if so what do you have with your sandwich at work?!!!

howaboutchocolate · 20/09/2023 15:40

I forget that people butter sandwiches. I never have. My sandwiches have some sort of chutney, relish, pickle, mayo, pesto, houmous or other wet thing inside, there's no need for butter.

I hate it when supermarket sandwiches have both mayo and butter, there's just no need. They don't go together!

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 20/09/2023 15:41

Do Americans have salad cream? I have it on everything.

Very hard to find in Spain…

I was truly shocked to discover this when I moved to the US. Up to then I had considered butter in a sandwich to be one of the pillars of civilisation. However, I immediately recognised the deliciousness of mayo in sandwiches, and the wisdom of Americans in this regard.

I now use butter only on a baguette, on soda bread and brown bread, or on toast, melted. Though if anyone is ever in the great state of Wisconsin and looking for a superb fast food experience, I highly recommend a Culver's butter burger.

We don't have chips for a meal, chips are a side dish

Chips in a sandwich does not appeal! Chips are great on their own with ketchup or mayo or blue cheese dressing etc.

You don’t add stuff to crisps!!! You eat them as they are

Slimerrr · 20/09/2023 15:44

I HATE that places automatically put butter in sandwiches! I hate butter except on potatoes. It’s infuriating!
