Savages.

Good butter is the foundation of a good sandwich.

Whatsfordinneragain · 20/09/2023 12:45

I don't think their butter is as nice as ours and imported butter is expensive.

Can't eat a sandwich without (proper) butter.

PurpleMonkeys · 20/09/2023 12:45

Olive oil spread is what I like at home.
If we go a cafe though and they have those little foil wrapped butters, I do like them a lot, never taste the same at home though for whatever reason.

Olika · 20/09/2023 12:46

I stopped putting butter several years ago.

therealcookiemonster · 20/09/2023 12:46

@NonMiDispiace that's what I was going to say. it created a waterproof barrier and keeps the bread from going soggy.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 20/09/2023 12:47

Butter is like a protective layer between filling and bread! It’s also good with a hot filling as it melts and forms a sort of vacuum seal around the bacon/sausages/chips. DP makes tuna sandwiches without butter and without draining the tin of tuna properly, so you get wet, flaccid bread that scatters tuna everywhere. The psychopath.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/09/2023 12:47

Butter on sandwiches is great - a jambon beurre is one of the all time great sandwiches.

Americans spread mayonaise in sandwiches like savages though.

AffIt · 20/09/2023 12:48

ReeseWitherfork · 20/09/2023 12:35

But they do appear to put cheese on absolutely everything

Well, they call it cheese, but I'd say it's debatable.

OhFFS! · 20/09/2023 12:49

I'm another one who doesn't put butter in a sandwich. I don't like it, If I need something to "glue" contents together, I use mayo

evtheria · 20/09/2023 12:50

I read about this on an American blog where they were suggesting 'trying it the British way' and buttering their sandwiches. You know that saying 'I was shooketh'? I really fucking was!

Can't stand mayo and mustard is too strong to slather on both sides as a spread, so I don't know how they're doing it!

Helendegenerate · 20/09/2023 12:51

@spitefulandbadgrammar

flaccid bread?

oh god help us

😂

KnittedCardi · 20/09/2023 12:51

Erm... excuse me? You are just eating ham sandwiches without anything??? But, but, but, they would be dry and cloying. Nothing nicer than a ham and cheese baguette, WITH butter. I actually don't really like sliced bread, so usually opt for a flute or baguette. Not really a mayo fan though, very indigestible.

My secret favourite would be baguette liberally spread with butter, and then topped with oodles of Nutella. Usually when I am feeling sad 😁

Wow hold on: butter AND Nutella?

loislovesstewie · 20/09/2023 12:55

Sorry my brain can't cope with this knowledge! What is butter for apart from sandwiches, toast, crumpets , making cakes?

FeigningConcern · 20/09/2023 12:55

Butter makes everything better.

minipie · 20/09/2023 12:56

Butter with bacon, sausages, cheese, smoked salmon. Mayo with prawns, chicken, tuna, salady fillings. Ham can go either way.

Olive oil for something like roasted veg & goats cheese or mozzarella & tomato.

Peanut butter, jam, soft cheese don’t need a spread, they are a spread themselves.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 20/09/2023 12:56

Hardly ever have butter in a sandwich if making it for myself only certain sandwiches I use it for. Like ham, cheese and butter. But if I'm using a spread like mayo, mustard, salad cream, cream cheese, jams or a nut butter I won't use butter. My English H puts butter on everything. He even uses butter when we have cheese and crackers. But, all toast gets buttered unless using Nutella. H has butter toast with Nutella...bleugh

MonumentalLentil · 20/09/2023 12:56

I sometimes use butter, sometimes not, depends on how hard it is and if I can wait for it to soften.

I don't use spread due to the crap it usually has in it, like rapeseed oil (GM) or in some cases palm oil. Even spreadable butter with cream as it goes mouldy before it gets used up.

I've not been to the US for a good few years but I do recall not being able to find any decent bread, I may have been shopping in the wrong places though, and it may be better now but it was mostly like sponge or cottonwool so I gave up on it. Not sure if butter would have helped or made it worse...

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 20/09/2023 12:58

Have you seen American butter? I wouldn’t fancy it on my sandwich either.

Proper butter definitely belongs on a sandwich.

caramac04 · 20/09/2023 12:58

Butter for me unless it’s pate on toast. Occasionally I might have mayonnaise but I still have butter.

Murpe · 20/09/2023 12:58

I just read that column too, had no idea. How does it not all fall apart? what about the damp proof course to stop moist things seeping into the bread while it's in your lunch box? Butter rules.

Needmorelego · 20/09/2023 12:59

The only sandwich my daughter likes is a butter sandwich.
Which is essentially eating "bread and butter" but I put the two pieces of bread together 😂

loislovesstewie · 20/09/2023 12:59

Do you know what makes a really great sandwich? Chocolate spread on granary bread with a layer of clotted cream! Delicious!

GoodOldEmmaNess · 20/09/2023 13:00

lol 'damp proof course' Grin

I hate it when l buy a sandwhich with no butter.. especially abroad. Its so dry.
Even with mayo etc l always like butter.
P.S l lived and worked in the USA for a year and some do use spread in their sandwiches.
