Butter is the only filling a sandwich needs

Absolutely agree!

Lovely freshly baked bread with butter and nothing else is the food of the Gods!

dreamingbohemian · 20/09/2023 14:22

Sorry but some of these posts sound crazy to Americans...Butter on a peanut butter sandwich?? Butter AND mayo??? Butter on a tuna mayo sandwich, wtf

Mustard, mayo, cream cheese, pesto, hummus, BBQ sauce, these are all much tastier spreads in our eyes

I mean if you love butter crack on, but Americans are not 'wrong' we just have different sandwich traditions. In my home region we don't do British type sandwiches at all, more Italian/Jewish/German influenced.

They also don't drink hot tea.
They make tea and let it cool then chuck a load of sugar in.
So like an iced tea.
American waitress told us this after I had ordered a pot of tea and asked her.

Of course Americans drink hot tea 🙄
We also drink iced tea, which is what you had. Best to specify.

In the Olden Days I worked on a Victorian museum farm as the dairy maid and spent much of my time making butter. Older people from all over the area used to come and buy it as they said it reminded them of before WW2.

But there is still a severely limited selection of cheeses compared to Europe, and even where you can get some good cheeses you often have to go to specialist shops, the selection in supermarkets is often dire.

This is the cheese department of my local supermarket. Does it look dire to you?

90% of that appears to be parmesan.

Electric kettles are relatively rare in the US, but lots of people have a kettle that sits on the stove burner (hob). I have one of those.

But generally speaking, there is less need for kettles in the US because we are a nation of coffee drinkers, and most people have electric coffee makers of some description.

Mustard = American Mustard or German sweet Mustard not that blow your head off and make you cry English bastarding Mustard...fuck me, bought some when I first came to the UK couldn't find my normal American Mustard in those days. Used it to make some salami sandwiches for a picnic H walks in sees what I'm doing and says whoa there that's a lot of Mustard. I replied with I don't like dry sandwiches. He laughed, actually fucking laughed. Said he would do his own.

We are having said picnic after a gruelling hike I sit down and unwrap my glorious Mustard, salami, provolone and rocket on rye. Next thing, I'm choking my eyes are streaming, nose starts running like Niagara fucking falls and he's laughing so hard he's crying. Like actually crying.

I've never touched the cunty stuff again. It's been nearly 20 years and it's dead to me.

You need Dijon french mustard ( not that awful brown stuff in a sachet they give you in cafes if you ask for french mustard - don't know where it's come from but it's not from France.)

No butter. Mayo provides the fat, spreadable bit. I’m from Yorkshire.

But they do appear to put cheese on absolutely everything

They also have cheese that comes from a can Confused

dreamingbohemian · 20/09/2023 14:34

Cheese options at a regular suburban supermarket (East Coast):

https://shop.wegmans.com/shop/categories/1

They even have Stilton!

People in the UK have very outdated notions about Americans and cheese, things have improved immensely in the last 10-15 years, just like in the UK

When I first moved to the UK almost 20 years ago I went to my local Tesco and the cheese aisle was literally just cheddar, double gloucester and red leicester (which all tasted the same, sorry) with a tiny section of industrial brie, camembert and mozzarella. Things have gotten much better since then and in the US as well.

mondaytosunday · 20/09/2023 14:37

Nope no butter! Mayo, mustard etc yes. But no butter!
In fact I'm forever looking at how they slammed butter then cheese on sandwiches here - ugh.

I love Weggies! They opened one in my area two years ago, and I try to get there twice a month or so. And you're right, the cheese department there is brilliant.

Monkeypopcorn · 20/09/2023 14:39

I always had butter in sandwiches as a child and hated it. Don't have it anymore, neither do my children. But I usually have something like mayo,.pickle or relish, so don't feel like I need butter!

CheshireCat1 · 20/09/2023 14:41

How on earth can anyone have a crisp butty without buttering the bread first, or a chip butty for that matter.

JoeyRamonesHair · 20/09/2023 14:41

Yes to butter! It forms a layre to stop any wet stuff (tomato, pickle etc) seeping into the bread and making the bread soggy (yuck).

JoeyRamonesHair · 20/09/2023 14:41

*layer! I am not from the Middle Ages.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 20/09/2023 14:42

My English husband doesn't butter sandwiches, it makes me wince.

BromCavMum · 20/09/2023 14:42

I'm from the US and I've learned to love buttered sandwiches. I still prefer mayo on a BLT though

French 's is a brand of mild sweet yellow mustard. And, dijon is definitely a favourite always have a jar on hand

loislovesstewie · 20/09/2023 14:44

You must have gone to a very weird Tescos, 20 years ago was 2003 and I was buying all sorts of cheeses there at that time. Same as other supermarkets. Even 40 years ago I was buying many varieties of cheese.
