Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

The OP posted this morning to say she'd heard her husband had committed suicide and the thread was closed shortly afterwards. She and the baby are fine, though.

God, that’s just horrible! Sad

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/10/2023 11:48

Yes, it really is!

MouseMinge · 13/10/2023 12:49

That is dark. I wonder what was going on in his head that lead him to that irreversible decision. I hope she's okay. It's one of those threads where you really wish/hope that it was made up.

I take most of these sorts of threads, especially ones which escalate quickly, with a pinch of salt as so many have turned out to be made up. Obviously it’s horrific if true.

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/10/2023 12:57

I'd rather it was made up, that's for sure.

Medee · 13/10/2023 13:08

Yes, I did wonder at the escalation. Horrendous if true.

MouseMinge · 13/10/2023 23:27

I watched the new adaptation of Interview With The Vampire last night and found it rather good. Far better than the awful film. Tom Cruise was so bloody wrong as Lestat it was criminal.

This week I have acquired an unfortunate addiction, one I thought I was safe from. I've never watched, nor felt the need to watch Married at First Sight, but I was doing a bit of channel hopping one day last week and thought "A few minutes won't hurt." Fast forward to this week and I'm watching it on catch up like a dirty little addict. It's pure trash but I can't take my eyes off it.

MavisMcMinty · 14/10/2023 00:50

I have FINALLY finished reading Trans, don’t know why I laboured so much. Helen Joyce is very complimentary about the women of MN!

I checked my Amazon account and definitely didn't order Eve by Cat Bohannon, but will keep it anyway.

Medee · 14/10/2023 08:20

I need to hand Material Girls, unfinished, back to the library today. My loan period expired and there’s a queue for it so I can’t renew. I’m on the list for Trans though. Both books I requested the local library service stock when they were first published, took till recently for them to be acquired!

duc748 · 14/10/2023 13:34

Setting off for Old Trafford now for the Grand Final (along with half the town!), can't wait! 🏉🍒🍒

Britinme · 14/10/2023 13:46

Have fun @duc748 :-)

I am off to a party this afternoon, for a friend's book launch, where I shall undoubtedly buy his book because he's a damn good port.

Britinme · 14/10/2023 13:47

That's poet not port!

MavisMcMinty · 14/10/2023 15:53

Having decided to keep (steal) the unsolicited Eve from Amazon, I just started reading it, and it’s instantly engaging and surprising and eminently readable! I look forward to the TWAW bit that was heralded in the Guardian review.

In the context of someone being upset about a cat getting into a supermarket delivery van, I've just discovered this: www.mumsnet.com/talk/flouncers_corner

After a less than ideal start to my day - camera into the womb, during which I nearly passed out which was very embarrassing - it turned out to be a good one which got even better when Snoop and I encountered something we'd never seen before. Well, we had but not from this particular angle.

We were on Worthing Pier with Seamus and I looked up and said, "Here comes a murmuration of starlings!" and come they did but more than that, they were flying just above us so we were witnessing the whole thing from directly underneath. The swooped and flew away and came back and a small group was met by another larger group and the group was enormous! When you're directly underneath you can see the "mechanics" of what's going on and then they swoop away a bit from you and it looks totally different. It was amazing, truly spectacular. I said to Snoop "It's like they're putting on a show just for us." and then another woman and came and said the same thing. We all felt as though we'd witnessed something magical and we had. It was amazing.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/10/2023 23:30

Snoop and I encountered something we'd never seen before. Well, we had but not from this particular angle.

In the context of the preceeding information, I worried where that was going. What an amazing thing to see! (Camera sounds most unpleasant - hope it's not left too much lingering discomfort.)

Kucinghitam · 15/10/2023 06:54

Ouch @MouseMinge, I reckon I would have passed out! I do hope you're OK now.

A murmuration of starlings is a glorious thing to watch and I sometimes wish Iived somewhere that I could see such a display in real life. Although, the downside is the massive amount of bird poo - BiL lives in a starling-infested town and he says it's utter hell in the areas they roost, whole areas of pavements/cars/shops/houses covered in guano.

OP posts:
Tricyrtis2022 · 15/10/2023 09:09

That sounds glorious, MouseMinge, what a show.

I remember the vast number of starlings in Birmingham in the 1970s. After dark they lined every available ledge in the city and in winter there were so many birds in the trees they appeared to be in leaf. The noise as they settled was extraordinary.

angelico53 · 15/10/2023 09:20

I remember that, too, tric. The noise at dusk was deafening. I loved it and remember being backed into a doorway on Corporation St by a girl I was shopping with for a determined snog with the starlings cheering us on.

Tricyrtis2022 · 15/10/2023 09:26

What an excellent memory, angelico, I can almost hear and see it all.

MavisMcMinty · 15/10/2023 10:23

I’ve seen minor murmurations but never a huge black swirling cloud of them, that would be a wish come true!

I peeled onions yesterday that made me cry. It’s so long since that happened I’d actually forgotten they make your eyes stream, so why do some onions do it and (for at least the last 10 years) most don’t any more?

CyanCrystalViolet · 15/10/2023 10:27

@MouseMinge I reckon I would’ve passed out as well. Did they give you any pain relief?

My grandmother used to think of starlings as pests and wouldn’t put food on the bird table if they were hanging around. They’re so pretty. I love watching the murmurations and how special you got to be right beneath one.

MouseMinge · 15/10/2023 21:59

@CyanCrystalViolet they told me to take a paracetamol and an ibuprofen half an hour before the appointment. I have co-codamol so I took two of those (30mg of codeine per capsule) and an ibuprofen. I'd have taken diazepam too if I'd realised but I honestly thought it would be fine, the camera being so narrow but apparently my cervix was a bit hard to get into or something. I was so embarrassed that I was overreacting and thinking "It's a bloody good job I didn't have children if I can't cope with this!" Snoop had one about an hour later - we hadn't planned it, it just happened that way and she was fine. It takes all sorts of vaginas I guess.

Anyway, public information for women who take HRT. It is highly likely that you will bleed at some point. Do go and see your doctor but don't worry it's almost certainly to do with the HRT and nothing more sinister than that. My issue was having the lining of my uterus being 1mm more than the cut off point, the bastard useless dried up husk of a no longer necessary organ!

MouseMinge · 15/10/2023 22:02

Murmerations are a wonderful thing. The starlings mostly stay by the sea and on the pier but they were perching outside my flat in a big old tree/bush thing for a while. They've not been there for a while. Maybe Django killing one of them made them flee.
