Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Glad to hear that you are feeling a little better @MouseMinge, cystitis is horrible.

We're very well located ChezKuc. Nearest corner shop is about 30 seconds away. Within 5 minutes walk, we have several restaurants and pubs, an independent cinema, grocer, deli, and a park with a little woodland (not all in the same direction as it would be weird to have a cinema in a woodland). Within 10-15 minutes is a local-sized supermarket, pharmacy, GP, dentist, various shops and zillions more pubs and restaurants, also a huge park with a huge woodland.

I realise we're hugely fortunate to be able to live where we are (shame about the actual house, but the location is unbeatable).

Waitrose is also about 15-20 minutes walk away, but it's a steep climb uphill on the way back. Good for exercising the glutes, one might say. Which leads me to concur with @MmePoppySeedDefage on the usefulness of Waitrose frozen chopped herbs, garlic and ginger.

It’s never occurred to me to buy frozen garlic but I’m definitely trying it (and chili and ginger). Proper garlic is fine as long as you’re using it up fast enough but cooking plain food for my mum means I don’t use it enough so when I want some it’s always in a bad way which means I get out of the habit of using it.

I am about a five to ten minute walk from a big supermarket. The only trouble is that supermarket is Asda. I mostly shop online.

Clearly you live in a 15 minute city @Kucinghitam, therefore it is inevitable that you will soon be confined to your home and only allowed to visit specific shops on special occasions. Shame really, it sounds great ;)

CyanCrystalViolet · 12/10/2023 12:21

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn is there an update on the crushed garlic?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/10/2023 13:29

Got distracted before reaching the kitchen, but it's on my experiments list.

MouseMinge · 12/10/2023 13:42

I'm also 5-6 minutes from one cinema and our local museum (which has, apparently, the largest selection of historical costume in the country) and about 12 minutes from the other cinema and the sea. On Sunday my friend B came for a visit and we ended up spending nearly two hours sitting on the beach, chatting, people watching, and in my case putting little bit of completely smooth bits of shell and membrane in my pocket. They're now on my sideboard and I put them in my hands to "worry" with when anxiety raises its ugly head.

Today I have finally got my hands on a ticket for the Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday. Bought online, but had to go to the stadium to collect. Luckily, I live nearby, and have nothing else to do other than drive down to the stadium to collect. But if I lived the other side of the country, as many fans do? The whole shebang has been a complete shambles, and fans have been treated very shoddily IMO. But it's a weight off my mind, of course.

OMG! I’ve just received a book from Amazon, and I had ordered a book so thought it’d be that, but it’s that book that was reviewed in the Guardian the other day, where the comments below kept being deleted because the author apparently states that TWAW and some of us remarked upon that.

Eve by Cat Bohannon.

I DID NOT ORDER IT!

I’ve never had to return anything to Amazon, is it easy or a pain?

How on earth did that happen? (Maybe it's a present from somebody?)

I have returned stuff to Amazon. IIRC I did the Chat thing with their customer services and they processed the thing and emailed me a return label.

MavisMcMinty · 12/10/2023 15:06

Thanks Kuc. There is of course a slight possibility I’d pre-ordered it months ago after reading about it and forgotten, that happens now and then. And on occasion I’ve pre-ordered Stephen King books then forgotten and pre-ordered them again, getting two in the post. I could just check my account, I suppose!

MavisMcMinty · 12/10/2023 15:07

Anyway, I’ll probably just keep it, TWAW or not.

artant · 12/10/2023 15:57

Returning stuff to Amazon is generally easy. If you did order it, it should show up in your orders. It’s possible you didn’t order it though (I think there’s some sort of review scam).

angelico53 · 12/10/2023 21:50

Hah! See the other thread - I've also got an unwanted copy.

MavisMcMinty · 12/10/2023 22:12

Oh wow! Woss goin’ on?

SinnerBoy · 12/10/2023 23:07

There's a TEZ in the dispatch department and they've substituted your order.

MavisMcMinty · 12/10/2023 23:15

TEZ?

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/10/2023 07:54

The mods have deleted the thread. Wonder what went on there?

Britinme · 13/10/2023 09:29

I followed that thread. Is the baby ok? Last I read mum was still in hospital with an infection and dickwad husband was still awol with OW.

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/10/2023 09:32

The OP posted this morning to say she'd heard her husband had committed suicide and the thread was closed shortly afterwards. She and the baby are fine, though.

Britinme · 13/10/2023 09:33

Oh that is tragic on so many levels. Poor woman.

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/10/2023 09:34

Indeed. The whole thread was tragic, wasn't it.

Britinme · 13/10/2023 09:35

Yes it was. Unimaginable pain.

angelico53 · 13/10/2023 09:44

Oh lord. I didn't read the thread so can't really comment, but from what little I know it strikes me once again how hard it is to really understand another - any other's - experience and how it influences everything.

A women a few houses away lost her partner to suicide - I couldn't help but be so angry with him, leaving such unimaginable pain. Then you start to learn a little more and the picture grows, gets coloured in, and there is only despair and fear and self-hatred, and it was easier to deal with when it was a cartoon. We generally see only cartoons on anything.
