I have a friend who is a teacher and is regularly up until midnight marking.

FootprintsOnTheCeiling · 19/09/2023 06:16

@Woollyguru and @Poontangle are you both employees rather than self employed? Do you tell your boss you’ve finished and find something else to do like help a colleague or do you just pretend to work? Have you told your bosses that you’re working less than your contracted hours?

mummy21blueeyed · 19/09/2023 06:18

35 hours a week.

YukoandHiro · 19/09/2023 06:19

Self employed so it varies but about 28. It's not enough but we can't afford any more childcare

VanillaFlotilla · 18/09/2023 21:59

On paper: 40. But in reality probably about half that. I wfh and get my work done quickly and don't have to waste time commuting or doing face time. But I've always been employed on a full time basis since I started working.

What's your job?
What do you do at home when you're "working" but not really? Do you get bored?

WinchSparkle80 · 19/09/2023 06:22

Contracted to do 37.5, often 45-55

Tornado70 · 19/09/2023 06:22

Between 36-50

Dragonwindow · 19/09/2023 06:26

I'm a teacher and I only work about 60 hrs a week (term time). But then again, I'm officially only 4 days a week. (spread over 5)

It's almost impossible to actually count it up these days though, because I'm sending emails while I'm making the tea, I called two parents last night in between putting my younger and older kids to bed, and I've sent two emails already this morning. There's no line at all between working hours and non-working. The only hours I don't do any work at all are the hours I'm asleep (and even then I'm having anxiety dreams about teaching!)

Lovelynames123 · 19/09/2023 06:27

50 to 70, but for my own business

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/09/2023 06:32

In a busy week, up to 80 hours. I'm employed for 37.5 hours. Then when it's quieter, we'll just pick up emergencies, probably 8-12 hours a week.

The busy weeks are mental but the quiet weeks make up for it. It works out roughly at my contracted hours over the year.

Lulu1919 · 19/09/2023 06:33

32 paid but I do about 34/35

Dacadactyl · 19/09/2023 06:37

18 per week, sometimes 22, depending on whether they're short staffed and I'm needed. But I'm contracted to 18 hours a week.

terraced · 19/09/2023 06:42

Self employed so work 5 - 7 days depending on how much work I have, weather (I'm a gardener), time of year, other commitments. Between 35-55.

Willmafrockfit · 19/09/2023 06:45

30
i could, perhaps should, go full time, for my pension, but like to have a work life balance

Crimsonbow · 19/09/2023 06:51

As a teacher I was contracted for 17 and a half hours in school but I easily worked 30 across 3 days (experienced, middle leader, fought hard not to work at the weekends)

I've left now and saved my mental health, possibly my life. I'd advise everyone to get out but then who would teach our DC?

Usernamen · 19/09/2023 06:53

Effervescent999 · 18/09/2023 21:55

teacher -about 80 in term time, about 10 outside of term time, much less than previous teaching jobs

Just to be clear, you work the equivalent of 11.5 hours a day 7 days a week with no day off, or 16 hours (say 7:30am to 11:30pm) 5 days a week?

If that’s true, that is far, far great than the hours worked by the teachers I know. Are you in a failing school or somesuch?

Rycbar · 19/09/2023 06:55

In term time between 70-80.
In the holidays I say it averages about 3/4 hours a day.

starlight2k · 19/09/2023 06:56

22.5hrs over 3 days

PinkyPork · 19/09/2023 06:56

42 contracted, actually do around 50

Usernamen · 19/09/2023 06:57

Baffled1989 · 19/09/2023 06:10

I have a friend who is a teacher and is regularly up until midnight marking.

Yes, I’ve certainly heard.

But for the poster who claimed to work typically 80 hours a week, she would have to be doing this every day Monday to Friday, not just from time to time.

Usernamen · 19/09/2023 06:59

If you have to return to work for a couple of hours after you’ve had dinner and put the kids to bed, you can’t say you work “8am to 11pm” or whatever, like it’s continuous. You would need to take the couple of hours of cooking, eating dinner and bath/bed time out (though I accept these are work too!)

This thread is about hours worked in your paid work, I believe.

Yuja · 19/09/2023 07:01

I'm contracted 35 hours. I usually end up doing a couple of extra but not much. Have 2 primary aged DC and mostly work from home

Batatahara · 19/09/2023 07:03

fridaynighter · 18/09/2023 22:31

Indeed!!

I know they're busy but I'm sorry I just don't buy that.
It's ok I know I'm about to be shot down in flames....

I agree... Having logged my hours for timesheets in very busy jobs before, I think it's easy to overestimate hour hours. I have frequently felt like "oh that must have been a 60 hour week" but when you write it out properly for a timesheet, you realise it's more like 50.

80 hours a week worked over 5 days would mean working from 7am to midnight with only an hour's break. If you assume 6 hours a day worked on each weekend day, it would still be 7am-9:30pm every weekday with an hour's break. I just don't believe that's very likely.
