Just this. How many hours a week do you work?

OP posts:

40, WFH. Struggle due to chronic health issues but can't afford to drop to PT

FootprintsOnTheCeiling · 18/09/2023 23:12

18-28 35 hours
28-34 14 hours
34-40 18.5 hours
40-49 30 hours
49-51 22.5 hours
51-52.5 30 hours

As others have referred to health, I’ve had Parkinson’s since age 40.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 18/09/2023 23:22

Contracted 37. Usually work about 40, up to 50 on a really busy week but claim it all back as flexi time eventually. Switching to 35 hours role soon which is only a small drop but seems to make a bit of a difference psychologically.

My 80+ day week is working on the fact that I get perhaps 1 day off in 11.... if I'm in a position to take one.

You hit your targets and keep your job or you have your days off and end up on an improvement plan'.

It's a tough gig.

Jeesus. Are you in sales? Do you own your own business?

I'm just curious because I used to work in an intense role that involved long very hours (late nights, all nighters). Some weeks were worse than others. But I always felt that 60 hrs/week was roughly the maximum someone could reasonably do on any sort of regular basis. When I worked more than that, my brain stopped working and I started doing weird things like accidentally wearing mismatched shoes. Another time I confused my body wash for body moisturiser and rubbed it on every day for a month.

So I'm intrigued (horrified!) that you're working 80 hrs. Is that regular or exceptional? I hope you're either saving lives or makin alot dosh ..,,

FoodieToo · 18/09/2023 23:25

Teacher in Ireland. Full time 27 hours. A bit extra at the start of the year so maybe one hour a day extra for September to get all plans done .

When I taught full-time, I used to do 60 hour weeks. 8am-6pm in school 5 days, 3 nights of 2 hours' marking/planning, and usually 3-4 hours on a Sunday marking, assessing, or making displays. I taught Year 5 who write quite a lot. I had 38 children in my top English set. I hope PPA time has helped.

Zola1 · 18/09/2023 23:38

37 contract, sometimes 9 paid overtime, always 5-10 unpaid overtime

Shergill15 · 18/09/2023 23:48

Contracted 30 over 4 days. Usually end up doing a few more per week - can claim it back as time off in lieu later which as a lone parent really helps plug childcare gaps in holidays/sick days/inset days etc

Woollyguru · 18/09/2023 23:51

Contract 36. Reality around 20-25, can easily get my work done in that time.

Kez171271 · 18/09/2023 23:53

72
6 x 12 shifts

ScotchPine · 18/09/2023 23:56

I did hours approaching that. In school for 7/7.30. Left 6/7. Worked straight through. Often after-school meetings/twilight insets and piles of marking/planning. Often lunchtime duties and ‘working lunches’. Started again at 9 and worked until 11/ midnight every night but Friday. Usually took Saturday off, worked through Sunday. Many holidays and bank holidays spent leading trips or camping for D of E. Over 200 reports to write, twice a year if I remember correctly. Over 200 exam papers to mark over Christmas and in the summer term. Frequent observations requiring full lesson plans. Numerous other pieces of admin and preparation of CPD sessions for insets etc and work on different projects. Totally unsustainable and the reason I left.

Varies by school, though, and often depends on the culture set by senior leadership as well, as how much reinventing the wheel you are expected to do. Can also get better over time as you build up a bank of resources. Our SLT very much did not care about teacher well-being. Would never, could never go back.

Gingernaut · 19/09/2023 00:00

Supposedly 37.5, but short staffed to the max

It's supposed to be 150 hours or so a month, but this month, I'm working closer to 190, so averaging 47.5 hours a week

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 19/09/2023 00:29

Contracted to 7.5 hours term time, should be doing a further 2.5 hours per week. Not sure how long for.

Onthelastdayofseptember · 19/09/2023 01:30

19 hours spread over 3 days to work around dc, and mainly wfh which obviously helps as no commute. Very lucky I can clock extra hours in term time to help with school holidays. Bits of extra side hustle work on top but this is quite flexible to fit round life ie dc and elderly parents.

Hope to never go back to full time work if possible.

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 19/09/2023 01:37

21 hours.

Bluelightbaby · 19/09/2023 01:42

3x 10hr shifts (paid 28.5hrs)

GinJeanie · 19/09/2023 01:46

About 60... try to cram into weekdays so I can have the weekend clear. Teacher.

theteddypileisgrowing · 19/09/2023 01:55

35 in my contract. More like 50. Did 12 today.

Sparklybutold · 19/09/2023 01:58

Work paid 20 hours.
Uni - 1 day a week.
Volunteer - 3-4 hours a week.

SprinkleOfSunak · 19/09/2023 03:27

Around 70 hours per week. Full time Teacher.

mdinbc · 19/09/2023 03:36

42.5 on a regular week, 51 if I work an extra day, which I do about once a month.
In transportation industry, office based.

Blamethecat57 · 19/09/2023 03:42

26.45.
3 nights a week.
It's enough to live on and gives me time with my children.
They are at their dads when I work.
Not much time for me. But it works for now.

VesperLynne · 19/09/2023 03:44

Philandbill · 18/09/2023 22:01

55-60.

Me too, if we are short staffed on a shift. I have also worked 9 weekends in a row. NHS.

Poontangle · 19/09/2023 03:44

I'm paid for 37.5, wfh.

I've never timed the actual hours I spend working, but it's probably less than a third of that. I'm very efficient.
