Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

Many many years ago the son of a later jailed TV presenter was in the Primary class taught by a friend, he said to his class at break 'If the lads'll stay behind for a couple of minutes we'll pick the team for Saturday's match'. The son of the furture convict piped up 'Sir, my father says one picks one's nose, one selects a football team'!

I lived in the same building as Barbara Windsor, so lovely and so friendly. She made the community. A pub nearby often had Donna Air in always with different men, always significantly older men. Can't say what she was like always kept herself to herself and sat out of the way.

Later moved and lived near Jimmy Carr, had lots of interaction and he is pretty much his on screen persona without the humour and wit, highly opinionated, very negative and argumentative. The things that are funny about him on screen are tricky to like off screen.

Boris seemed to be to his word always on a bike, really relaxed person and likes a discussion. Other than drawing in a lot of press activity he was really liked in the neighbourhood, not politically but as a neighbour.

Rod Stewart was often in a pub we went to and is totally amazing, so down to earth, friendly and happy.

Have seen lots of others passing but don't know enough to judge.

Being nosey, where did you live?

When my DSD was around 9 she met Michael Rosen at some kids literature event. Apparently as soon as the adults were out of ear shot he was rude and dismissive to the kids and wouldn’t answer any of their questions.

Oh no that's so disappointing! My pal who's a special school teacher said Mr Tumble came to film something at her school and none of the staff could believe how rude and what a diva he was. But when he was with the kids (whether the cameras were on or not) she said he was a different person, completely gorgeous with them.
My youngest just met Frank Cottrell Boyce (who I really like) at a book thing at school and said he was lovely so that was a relief!

Not surprised to hear how lovely Andy Murray is - the man has his head screwed on (see his cutting remarks to journalists who ignore the achievements of female tennis players) and has a wicked sense of humour judging by his turn on “Rob and Romesh”.

He was also a guest in the audience of Mock The Week once, and the panellists continually made jokes at his expense - he and Kim were absolutely howling.

I recall him being on the Mock the Week audience a few times, he was there just after he lost the Winbledon final and also there the week after he won it, I doubt many others would have done that, he always took the ribbing and inuendo so well.

London; Marylebone Hjgh Street and then Angel.

Is the tennis player Andy Murray?
Many years ago I had the misfortune of meeting Jim Davidson at an event and he was exactly what I expected!

Why would it be AM? He's a complete gentleman

verabarbleen · 04/10/2023 18:15

The only person I have met is the guy who played super hans in peep show. He actually seemed like the character 😂 he was very nice though

The Greg Davies and Russell Tovey makes me so happy. I used to come across a lot of famous people in my old line of work.

off the top of my head, Andy Murray, Angela Scanlon, jamilia jameel, Chris Martin, Chris Ramsey David O’Doherty and Brad Pitt all very respectful.

Morvan Christie sent someone over to tell them not to look at her and Phil Wang was a prick.

im lucky to live in a city where I get to bump into a lot of famous people across the year (and at one time in particular) and I’m always amazed and more often than not fortunately pleasantly surprised.

I just had to look up who Morvan Christie was

Sarah Beeney. Absolutely lovely. Had to deal with her in a professional capacity a few years ago, very nice to all members of staff, especially junior ones who most people treat like shit. Her husband was very pleasant too

My parents have socialised with Sarah (and her family) several times and she is always lovely.

Are you sure he was actually there a few times?! I know they had a running joke about him being there every week, but it was just the same footage of him and Kim laughing every single time!

@Marchitectmummy

I’m surprised about Jimmy Carr. When I was at uni, we were in Starbucks and he came in. It was really busy so he asked if he could sit at a spare chair at our table and he was lovely. Asked us all about our uni courses and everything. Just chatted. He seemed really personable and without any of the attitude he has on screen.

That's interesting, near opposite experiences! Maybe its a bit of neighbourly NIMBYism. Perhaps in another context he would be different but I wouldn't know.

Gymmum82 · 04/10/2023 18:28

So glad to hear that HBC is lovely. I absolutely adore her and any film she’s ever been in.

Sad about Mary Berry though. I always wished she was my granny and she seems so lovely.

Only ones I’ve met are Rolf Harris. Who was a sleaze, felt up half the young girls. Was unsurprised when he was sent to prison.
Ben Fogle was pleasant and happy to pose for pictures.
All the guys in take that have always been lovely

I saw Barbara on Harley St once walking her dog which I worked in Cavendish sq, she was tiny!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 04/10/2023 19:14

Saw Alan Carr in Selfridges, he was lovely to staff and friendly to those who spoke to him. Seemed genuinely nice. Matt Hancock - better looking in the flesh and doesn’t come across as arrogant. Melanie Sykes - expected her to be in love with herself but she’s pretty down to Earth.

Ah yep, she was a very local person, often shopped in the local shops etc.

Ha yep she was very delicate, that i dont think came across on screen.

Alexander Armstrong was an absolute arsehole when my sales girls worked for him, uma therman used to tell me to just run her credit card! John galliano used to sign his emails Jonny G.

My DH met Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan, Walking Dead). He said he was a really lovely guy, very polite and kind.

The actress from The Bay and Grantchester? She's ridiculous, who does she think she is? Why would anyone look at her, would they recognise her?

it was during a filming and the irony was the person was a student who was looking at the cameraman, they were interested in the filming technique 😂😂😂😂

I bumped into Paddy Ashdown in the Palace of Westminster when he was leader of Lib Dems. It was my fault, not looking where I was going, but he was utterly charming and apologised. Very attractive and smartly dressed too.

Used to deal with Paddy on the phone for various IT issues. Lets just say - not a nice man at all.

oops pressed too soon

Tony Iommi - pleasant
Murray Walker - best day ever

Yes Murray! I read bits of his autobiography and he came across as a genuinely lovely man! The world lost a great guy when he passed away! Legend!

Watto1 · 04/10/2023 20:39

I share a dentist with Gareth Thomas. We were once in the waiting room together and I didn’t recognise him when he first walked in (it was Covid times and he was wearing a mask) but as soon as he started talking to the receptionist I realised who he was and looked up at him. He saw me looking and gave me a wink. I could tell he was grinning too underneath his mask! I saw him there again at my next appointment (we obviously have the same gap between check ups!) and he very theatrically held the door open for me , sort of bowing and holding the door with a flourish!

We were behind him at check-in at the airport , he had left his boarding card in the gents and was trying to blag his way through. He actually said. ‘Don’t you know who I am? and expected them to send someone to find it. They sent him away and he was not happy!
