Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

Ah as others have named names, I shall name too.

It was Andrew Castle.

I can see why you'd guess Andy Murray though!

I can't stand to watch Andrew Castle commentating on tennis, he is so biased and condescending. Considering he didn't win a grand slam or much as a player. So up himself for some strange reason.

Andy Murray on the other hand is very self deprecating considering what he's achieved , has a very dry sense of humour that some people don't get.

Was it Andrew Castle who used to do those ambulance-chasing adverts on TV?

Montegufoni2017 · 05/10/2023 10:33

James Corden, rude and dismissive.
Holly Willoughby self important
Boris Johnson odd but funny
Rio Ferdinand friendlY

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper😂I see what you did there! Didn't think of that when I wrote it

bombastix · 05/10/2023 11:57

Paul McCartney is hands down the coolest Beatle; and the most interesting.

CatMattress · 05/10/2023 13:01

Ooh, forgot to mention poor old Richard E Grant.
I had a group of friends who lived in Richmond so we used to wander round with our litre bottle of coke, topped up with vodka (ah, the 90s) and be quietly obnoxious in a rather middle class way. Nothing illegal or impinging on other people's safety or wellbeing, but grown ups would tut if they saw us, that kind of thing.
Anyway, wandering back one sunny Saturday evening we - an inveterate group of Withnail fans - bumped into our lord and hero, Mr Grant himself. We followed him for about 200 metres bellowing Withnail quotes and lauding him as the wonder we thought him.

It must have been incredibly irritating and potentially threatening, but he waved and smiled politely before beating a hasty retreat. It was really the nicest way of responding to our awful, drunken antics. I still admire him and feel guilty two decades later. Sorry Richard E Grant. I'd get very cross if my children did that.

Yes he did do adverts years ago for some lawyers.

You know mumsnet has changed when a thread mentioning Terry Wogan has been running for ten hours before someone posts this photo Sad

There's one like that of Grayson Perry at a Children's Award thing.

I will not Google for it Envy

Anthony Rapp from RENT...I wasn't feeling very well the day of the meet and greet and accidentally threw up on him because it was a long wait and I thought I was fine. He was very kind but also seemed sad about his career being pretty much over.

He's doing OK on Star Trek Discovery!

Clawdy · 05/10/2023 15:00

Intrigued by the Grayson Perry pic! I did google but couldn't find it!

Me too

Its5656 · 05/10/2023 18:27

Marty Pelow was really rude and arrogant.
Gary Barlow was really lovely and gorgeous!
I've met Mark Owen as well who was so nice and sweet. Not that I expected different.

abs12 · 05/10/2023 19:33

Interesting! Princess Anne, second that and she's quick witted, always a sly joke. Totally entertaining, down to earth, and a bloody hard worker from what I've seen.

Tonkerbea · 05/10/2023 21:08

Surprised that pp said Angela Scanlon was rude, she always seems so personable on Your Home Made Perfect

Somebody posted it on a MN thread back at the time - I did an AS, but couldn't find it.

I’ve met Terry Pratchett who was lovely. Also David Mitchell and Robert Webb (in the Mitchell & Webb days) who were both polite but I didn’t get the chance to speak to them much.

ButterflyBitch · 06/10/2023 09:05

Oh and Bernard Cribbins who signed a Doctor Who book for me and was lovely too.

I don't know about rude, never met her, but she's boring as anyone ever on strictly whenever she speaks.

Paul O'Grady was so rude. Communicated via an assistant "tell her to do this. Ask her why..". I have no idea why he felt the need for an interpreter/intermediary. Totally bizarre.

When PO'G came to do some filming at my workplace we were warned in advance he might be tricky but we got the 'other' Paul - he was chatty and gregarious. Maybe it helped that a member of staff had a dog?

FuckingAnnoyed · 03/10/2023 22:05

Mary Berry - not nice at all. Met her through work and she was haughty and rude.

I've heard she is delightful in real life. Maybe at work she's different. I know people who live near her and someone who doesn't know her that well but have shared a cup of tea and said she's lovely.

scrumble767 · 07/10/2023 12:31

Gary Barlow - just the loveliest man 😍

Umanresources · 07/10/2023 14:44

Tony Robinson was very rude to my SIL when she accidentally met him. Put his hand up in front of her and said, “I don’t do autographs.” She wasn’t going to ask him for one anyway.
Daley Thompson was a delight and had photos with people and signed autographs when he got his honorary doctorate at UMIST, in the 80s. I’m embarrassed to say that another recipient at the same time was largely ignored. It was David Attenborough, who wasn’t quite as appealing to us in our 20s.

TotalOverhaul · 07/10/2023 16:40

Lenny Henry. A very serious, studious, aloof and intellectual man with a doctorate. Not the cheeky chappy gurning for TV persona that made him famous. I liked him a lot. I love serious geeky men and he definitely is one.

Feralgremlin · 07/10/2023 23:05

Cher is absolutely lovely! Her security was being a bit OTT and essentially forming a wall around her but she swatted them away so that we could meet her. Chatted to us for ages!

All the members of McFly are wonderful and super down to earth. Accidentally stayed in the same hotel as them as a teen and bumped into them in the bar, Danny actually came and sat down opposite me to chat.

Prince Edward and Sophie are an actual delight. They opened a garden centre I worked at and just came across as genuinely kind and considerate.

Warwick Davis, legend. Really funny!

A friend bought me tickets to a private show with Lenny.
By the time it finished I was absolutely sure that my friend hated me, it was the absolute worst night of " entertainment " I've ever had the misfortune to witness.

I would have preferred your experience.
