Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

I wasn't impressed with Ant and Dec. They switch their personas on and off with the camera. No engagement with their fans at all. Eamon Holmes however was very engaging.... but a bit of a nob.

sweetdreamstenasee · 03/10/2023 23:12

My husband used to work with celebrities and so I asked him to the nicest to work with was and his answer was James Mcavoy and Harry Styles.

EnoughNow2023 · 03/10/2023 23:14

Working in hospitality I crossed paths with Craig Charles in 2 venues over the years. Absolute arrogant, entitled prick.

fortnumsfinest · 03/10/2023 23:14

Sarah Beeney. Absolutely lovely. Had to deal with her in a professional capacity a few years ago, very nice to all members of staff, especially junior ones who most people treat like shit. Her husband was very pleasant too

Oh yes Brian May and his wife are truly lovely people!

A family member recently met Brian May and Anita Dobson and said they were really nice

Frankie Dettori is up himself. Very arrogant.

Years ago now I met Rhod Gilbert as he was starting out in comedy, I know he’s actually quite shy and also likes an on-stage rant, but I was having an argument in the bar post-show with the headline act of the evening who had tried to stir the audience up against me for not laughing at a rape joke. After I’d had it out with that guy (and he’d apologised), Rhod Gilbert took the time to come over to me to say he’d overheard what I’d said and to ask if I was OK. We had a chat and he was absolutely lovely. And much funnier and later much more successful than that odious headliner.

Was the headline act Jimmy Carr?

I follow his ex wife on Ista and she seems to be down to earth and likeable. She doesn't talk about JV other than mention her trips to the Uk every now and then and their son's obsession with planes.

However I heard her interviewed on the radio once and she came across as quite petty and spoilt which surprised me as it was so at odds with her Ista. I suppose we all have bad days..........

His last wife is an awful whinger, an absolute dose.

No, it was Ian Cognito who’s dead now. Billed himself as “unapologetically offensive”. I made him apologise though.

sweetdreamstenasee · 03/10/2023 23:23

Also in my own experience Allison Hammond was rude but this was a few years after big brother, so many years ago. Maybe she has changed or maybe had more training as her star has risen.

Hugo from made in chelsea was working with my old company when he had a sunglasses brand. I was assigned his project he was very genuine, appreciative and thankful and I always remember how he seemed to value my opinion.

nationallampoons · 03/10/2023 23:23

I've met Johnny Vegas a few times when he's waiting for his train. Such a lovely, friendly bloke. Always talks to his fans

Through work I met some lovely celebs.
Ryan Reynolds was lovely
Wolf from gladiator was too
Tyson fury was great with all his young fans and so many more

Sophie from Geordie shore was one of the nastiest people I have ever met. Stuck up, bitchy and rude. Scotty T was also a prick.

The weirdest one I have met was Tommy Robinson. Not a celebrity but not what I was expecting. He's short, the whitest teeth I have ever seen and very polite.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 03/10/2023 23:23

Liza Minelli, very much off duty in a hotel bar YEARS ago. She was absolutely hilarious, warm, & the type of person you would want as your slightly mad best friend.
Friend of a friend used to work with Andy Murray and said he's adorable. Ridiculously driven professionally, hates the media circus, but really cares about people and has such a dry sense of humour you could use him as a dehumidifier. Judy's also lovely apparently, always remembers people, and makes everyone feel better just by being there.

Myneighboursarewankers · 03/10/2023 23:24

Danny divito - lovely
Simon cowell & Amanda Holden lovely
alisha Dixon - really nice
bill Wyman - nice but I was young and was a brief encounter
robbie Williams - nice guy

i have a long list of people iv met and the only one I can remember being an utter twat was fazer from n-dubs. I wasn’t a fan anyway but he was a complete wank stain.

my mum met mcjagger (?) when she was little and helped him find his flight in France as he didn’t speak French. He gave her a card he signed and she swapped it at school for a cup cake.

nationallampoons · 03/10/2023 23:25

Oh and one more I feel needs mentioning. Used to be in atomic kitten, always trying to get into the media.

She's a compulsive liar. Don't believe everything she says on this morning. People who know her know the truth. Hope she reads this

I am pleased about that, because I have plans to marry him...he doesn't know this though! 😂

Whoa there lady! Greg is mine!

OK, this one I am green with envy

Same.

I live overlooking the Mull of Kintyre and often hope I'll bump into him when I'm walking the dogs. But I think he's given up on Scotland pretty much.

Saw the Mull of Kintyre this June from Torr Head in the north east Antrim coast.

It is nuts how close Ireland and Scotland are (12 miles) when you actually see it. Did the obligatory McCartney song while looking at it! Asked a local about anyone swimming across but he said the water is treacherous due to the tidal flow. The water looked so serene, yet the very strong current makes it a very difficult task. The England to France swim is much easier apparently, for although the distance across the channel is 20 miles the water is much calmer, and warmer.

Sonolanona · 03/10/2023 23:27

When my DS2 was young we had a special needs trike from the Beckham's charity fund, organised via Victoria and her Mum... they were both absolutely lovely.

SurpriseItsMeHorseyNeighNeigh · 03/10/2023 23:28

@Myneighboursarewankers Do you mean Mick Jagger?

ChimneyPotter · 03/10/2023 23:36

Have had various public arts jobs over the years including liaising with speakers, artists, etc so had my fair share of famous people. Through work I particularly know the world's best ballet dancers really well but I realise that's pretty niche!

Eileen Atkins (actor) - self-important diva and very irritable
Vanessa Redgrave (actor) - likewise, thought to be fair, v old!
Peter Blake (pop artist) - beyond charming, v funny, generous to a fault
Grayson Perry (artist) - up himself arsehole and mercenary as hell
Woody Allen (director) - answered the door to his massive house in belgravia in a dressing gown. Enough said.
Jenny Agutter (railway children, the midwife nuns)- a massive flirt with my dad
Alexander Armstrong (pointless) - often too busy to do things in person but writes lovely emails
David Attenborough (amazing wildlife man) - has beautiful handwriting and thick letter paper
David Dimbleby (Question Time)- has a slightly impatient streak but always speaks to everyone as an equal, esp people like volunteers
Eddie Redmayne (actor) - bit of a flirt, hugely knowledgeable about modern art

Oh dear @hdbs17 - I hope it wasn’t Tim Henman, I would lost my faith in humanity!

I have met Tim Henman a few times. He was very normal but wasn't as attractive in person as i expected him to be. But then he was easily 15 years older than when I last saw him on tv

Purplebunnie · 03/10/2023 23:38

Mylovelygreendress · 03/10/2023 23:09

Chris Tarrant was an arrogant pig

He very much is isn't he. Met him in a local pub, pushed in front of me at the bar and behaved as if he was IT. This was in the Tiswas days

Now the Phantom Flan Flinger - very quiet unassuming person

Just remembered I used to bump into 'Tim Henman's Dad' all the time when I lived in Oxford 20 odd years ago. Not quite Judy Murray -level of fame I grant you!

Unitedthebest · 03/10/2023 23:47

Sir Alex Ferguson. A friend of his (and a mutual friend of our family) arranged a meet with him for our daughter. He is without doubt (celeb or not) the nicest, kindest most humble man ever. He chatted to us for ages, shared a glass of red with my hubby and asked my little girl so many questions whilst telling us his tales of his time in Glashow. My little girl wrote him a letter to say thank you for his time and he wrote a 2 page handwritten letter back with some beautiful life advice about living your life with enthusiasm and determination. A true gentleman ❤️

That's lovely about the cat, @MouseMinge Smile - something in the tone of voice, perhaps?

I think so, the timbre and the slowness of his delivery. If I watch any of his films now - and I go to see It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas at the cinema - I think of Drusilla, my cat.
