Will anyone think I’m a twat?!

For going swimming and only doing 15 lengths 🫣😂
I’m not a good swimmer, actually rather terrible, but I really got quite into it on my holidays. I don’t have much stamina and my form is poor.
Dh suggested I just go and do 15 lengths a few times a week and try and build up from there.
In theory it’s a good idea, I have the time and wfh 4 days a week so could aim to do it twice.
But would anyone else swimming be laughing at my pathetic efforts?! Tbh I doubt it as I usually use the gym and take no notice of anyone else but I think it’s because I only plan on being there such a short amount of time, I think I’d feel a bit stupid… 🫠

I started swimming after a spinal injury years ago as part of my physio, and I could barely manage two lengths and looked like a Persian cat that had been chucked in a pond.

No one laughed at me so I think you'll be fine!

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 17/09/2023 20:09

Of course not - i wouldnt know how many laps the other people are doing - when im trying to do my 20 and somtimes i only make it to 16

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 17/09/2023 20:10

I don't think anyone will notice. I swim now and again and have never noticed how much or little anyone else is doing. I notice if someone is really good or fast as I do fairly plodding breaststroke but that's all.

No one is counting.

Squishedstormtrooper · 17/09/2023 20:11

Literally no one will care. I used to be so self conscious about this kind of thing but if you think about it the other way round- do you watch every person enter and leave and judge how long they were in for?

I sometimes go in for 10 lengths after a run and other times don’t even do that and just float away in the jacuzzi. Enjoy your swimming you’ll feel so much better for it!

jays · 17/09/2023 20:11

I can’t even swim to save my own life. Seriously. So no! No one will thing anything other than you can swim! X

Saucery · 17/09/2023 20:11

Honestly, no one will be counting. Go for it! You’ll soon build up stamina and number of lengths and even if you don’t it’s 30 lengths a week more than people sat at home not swimming.

Deathbyfluffy · 17/09/2023 20:11

No one will care.
I swim regularly and the last thing on my mind is what other people are doing - why would I care if someone did 10 or 1,000 lengths?

Just do what you’re happy with safe in the knowledge no one else will give a shit 😊

Findyourneutralspace · 17/09/2023 20:12

No one will pay the slightest attention. You get in, you swim, you get out.
I swim regularly and can barely keep track of my own lengths. The last thing I’m doing is counting anyone else’s.

Dacadactyl · 17/09/2023 20:12

Not at all. I love swimming and do tons of lengths, but no one will be thinking about what you're doing.

As long as you stick to the right lane for your speed (and that's another thread!), no one will be thinking anything!

Newname7 · 17/09/2023 20:14

Swim three times a week - the only time I notice how many lengths someone is doing is if they are especially fast or in an especially long time (I.e in when I got in and showing no sign of getting out once I have done my 60mins). Crack on and enjoy your swimming :)

TheChosenTwo · 17/09/2023 20:15

Well most of the time they have lanes and then an area for general swimming, I think I’d prefer to stick to the general swimming part as I’m not even confident enough to swim in the slow lane!
I know you’re all right, thank you, no one will give a shit because they’re all focussing on themselves.
I’m going to pack my bag and go first thing tomorrow.

No one will care.

They won’t mind time how long you’re there or probably even notice.

No one will even care if your lady garden is overflowing from the swimming costume.

The only time people might notice is if you end up like a drowning kitten and look in need of rescue.

Screamingabdabz · 17/09/2023 20:16

“But would anyone else swimming be laughing at my pathetic efforts?!”

Ate a celebrity or something? Who do you imagine is in the swimming pool watching your every move? I can’t swim a length and I don’t give a shit because I know no one, and repeat no one, would give a shiny shit.

TheChosenTwo · 17/09/2023 20:16

I’m just so rubbish 😂😂😂
oh my god I’m laughing at myself but I’ve had such bad back issues (2 slipped discs and just crappy ongoing problems with it) that I need a variety of exercises not just my gym stuff. Hopefully i’ll really get into it. I usually do a walk before work but I’m going to aim for 2 swims and 2 walks this week Pre work.

Jellybean23 · 17/09/2023 20:18

People are far less interested than you imagine. No one is going to count the lengths you swim. Too busy counting their own or not counting at all.

I’d never eat a celebrity!!
I don’t know who might be laughing, people in the cafe? People in the gym above the pool?!
I think I just feel self conscious because I’m really crap 😂 it’s the paranoid that because I’ve never been good at it, others will
notice. And I get it, so fucking what if they do? But still, it’s an insecurity and one i’ll hopefully defeat soon.

Go for it! Sometimes I’m just not feeling it so I’ll do a few lengths and go. Nobody cares, I don’t even notice other people at the pool to be honest unless they’re doing something really weird, which luckily doesn’t happen often! There are some people at my pool who don’t even swim, they just walk in the slow lane, good on them for getting moving.

Vallmo47 · 17/09/2023 20:22

No one judges anyone in the pool OP - not your size , ability or how long you are there for. As long as you stick to a lane that suits your speed you’re fine! It’s fantastic exercise and you’re joining a community and might make new friends. Go for it, what it does for your mental health is amazing.

rwalker · 17/09/2023 20:28

Loads of people only swim very short distances

but more to the point no one will care
look on YouTube for videos on techniques

mfhtoeh · 17/09/2023 20:29

If you’re not feeling confident, look at whether your local hospital has a swimming pool membership.

My local hospital has a pool with different types of membership including staff, public, disabled/health-related/gp referral etc.

The pool offers all sorts of times for activities and abilities.

There is no judgement whatsoever there. People all have their own reasons for going. It might be a less daunting option for you.

DuranNotSpandeau · 17/09/2023 20:36

I lose count of my own lengths so I'd definitely not have a clue how many other people are doing.😂

I know when I first started I did 8 lengths in 30 minutes and could hardly get showered and dressed because my arm muscles were screaming!!

Go and enjoy it, then enjoy the progress you'll make week on week.

CynicalUsee · 17/09/2023 20:38

No one cares. I used to go, swim for 20 minutes and get out. Over time I swam more lengths in that time frame, no one batted an eyelid.

BlowDryRat · 17/09/2023 20:39

No. Sometimes I do 10. Nobody cares. (Unless you're swimming slowly in the fast lane. Then, prepare to die be glared at).

advice1011 · 17/09/2023 20:42

People in the gym above the pool? I can imagine if the layout is as such that even people not swimming could easily watch (i.e. people doing other non-swimming gym workouts) I'd be nervous too but don't even worry about it! Once you do it a few times you'll feel less and less nervous about it :) good luck.
