Will anyone think I’m a twat?!

For going swimming and only doing 15 lengths 🫣😂
I’m not a good swimmer, actually rather terrible, but I really got quite into it on my holidays. I don’t have much stamina and my form is poor.
Dh suggested I just go and do 15 lengths a few times a week and try and build up from there.
In theory it’s a good idea, I have the time and wfh 4 days a week so could aim to do it twice.
But would anyone else swimming be laughing at my pathetic efforts?! Tbh I doubt it as I usually use the gym and take no notice of anyone else but I think it’s because I only plan on being there such a short amount of time, I think I’d feel a bit stupid… 🫠

Just coming back to update this to say this morning I swam my longest swim - 1km! 40 lengths. I’m absolutely delighted 😀
Still very slow but I’ve been going 3 times a week and I’ve really enjoyed it on the whole. I can even feel my bingo wings toning up!

That's brilliant OP! I'm so glad you went and kept going.

Haven't rtft. I took swimming lessons when pregnant with ds 14 yrs ago! Really helped with form. Didn't go at all until after dd was born and I really struggled to do 12 lengths. Combo of fitness, technique and a lot of worrying what I looked like. Anyway, i persevered and very quickly was up to 40 lengths (45-50 mins so not fast but not slow). My only hope is you don't do breast stroke. Not as effective as front crawl in working out different muscle groups and compresses bones in neck - very bad for you! Keep at it!

MaraScottie · 23/10/2023 21:05

Would you consider doing some 1-1 lessons OP? It'll help build your confidence, give you some really useful drills, and build you up to doing more.

Well done though, it's a super way to get fit and reduce stress, and you've done the hardest part!

Thanks, my arms are feeling pretty weary this morning!
I am considering 1:1 lessons, I’d like to become a more efficient swimmer for sure.
@Angelik i am swimming breaststroke - 40 lengths took me 41 minutes and it felt very slow, everyone else is doing 2 lengths to my 1 but I genuinely don’t care about the speed, it’s an enjoyable activity - I’d like to gain the water confidence to put my face in! I don’t even get my face wet in the shower and the idea of plunging my face into the water terrifies me so maybe it’s a water confidence class I need to look for.

If anyone does think you are a tw@t, then they are actually the tw@ts. Any normal person would look at someone in a pool, and making an effort to swim, admirably. After all, they are at least making the effort aren't they.

TwoShades1 · 24/10/2023 10:14

I don’t think people will really notice. I mean maybe if you only did one length some of them might notice. But everyone is busy counting their own lengths, watching out for other swimmers, thinking about their form,
etc.
