I'll be 40 next year and am looking for inspiration. What did you do to mark the milestone?

Had a baby. Went for a meal with DH on the day. Had DD 2 weeks later.😁

I had met my husband six month previously and he surprised me with a weekend at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saison. It was fabulous and must have cost a fortune as we had a two storey suite!

Some great ideas here. I am 40 next month and can't decide what to do. So far there will be a night out with friends, a meal 'somewhere nice' with family and a bottomless brunch/pub crawl with our kids (they are 21 and 19).

I want to do something just OH and I but currently undecided. I have decided to make the whole year my 40th though 😁

We turned 40 the same year, so had a joint trip to New York for a few nights which was amazing - it was my first time there and it didn't disappoint. For my actual birthday I had a private room at a local posh restaurant that sat 25, so I invited 24 of my local female friends for lunch, followed by a night down the pub for those who could stay on (we all had young children, hence was easier to just have all the womenfolk while the menfolk stayed home with the kids).

DC were small so DH booked EuroDisney as a surprise. We had an amazing corner suite in the nicest resort hotel and could see the fireworks from our room. I enjoyed it all much more than I thought I would.

@ThreeRingCircus

I hadn't thought about the carbon footprint of a cruise - having sat at a harbour and watched one set off I've always assumed that they are even worse than airplanes but I could easily be wrong. I'm curious so I now I'll do and see if I can find out !

Not sure I'm a cruise person though - I'm afraid I can't see the attraction on any level (trapped on a boat surrounded by people!) but since I've hever been on one perhaps I'm missing something.

BoobyDazzler · 18/09/2023 07:12

Nothing, it was in the middle of the first lockdown 😩

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 18/09/2023 07:19

In case anyone else is wondering (I suspect it's just me...)

If one person goes on a 5-night cruise that covers 2,000 km, at 250 gCO2/pax-km (the most efficient cruise ship line) that passenger is responsible for 500 kgCO2. The same person flying by jet would emit 160 kgCO2 on an average airline.

HelpMeGetThrough · 18/09/2023 07:22

Nothing and also nothing for 50th. People probably think I'm a miserable sod where my birthday is concerned, but I can never see the point of all the hassle.

It's just like any other day for me.

Fizbosshoes · 18/09/2023 07:23

Very un MN but I had a big party for my 40th at a sports club with a buffet, a bar, a DJ and a 3 tier cake. And it was fab 😊

On my actual birthday I had a meal out with family

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 18/09/2023 09:12

Went out for a fancy meal with DH. Had a family party and my mums which was lovely, and a few weeks later we went for a day out in London with the children to have afternoon tea and see Matilda the Musical! It was lovely!

I went on a Caribbean cruise on my own [ due to splitting with ex]. I had a wonderful two weeks.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/09/2023 10:07

I'm 40 next year. We've planned a nice summer holiday for us plus my parents, then I have no clue about my actual birthday. Its a Friday in November so probably go out for a meal and drinks

Hibernatalie · 18/09/2023 17:07

The weekend before I went to Hampton Court Palace with DH, DD7 and DS5. We stayed overnight nearby and went to Richmond Park the next day for a picnic.

On the actual day I went out for dinner with DH, DC, sister, nephew and my parents. It was lovely.

Later that month we went on a camping trip with a group of friends, 2 of whom were also turning 40 within the next few weeks.
