I'll be 40 next year and am looking for inspiration. What did you do to mark the milestone?

OP posts:

There was Covid so had the allowed number of friends over for a wine tasting in the garden. It was lovely weather.

wasaloner · 17/09/2023 19:55

It was in the summer and I went to Spain with five of my girlfriends, we went to a festival there. Then I spent 10 days in Thailand with my sister (her gift to me) then I came home and had a dinner with DH in my fave restaurant in a local city. Very lucky 🍀

TenOhSeven · 17/09/2023 19:55

I had an afternoon tea delivered to my house because it was lockdown and couldn't go anywhere!

I don't think we did anything..I gave birth on DH's 40th, and now, thinking about it, I'm disappointed he didn't make a similarly grand and sweeping statement.

We didn't do anything for our 50ths due to COVID. Maybe our 60ths....

Do a delayed celebration? Don't put it off. A lot can happen in ten years.

Vettrianofan · 17/09/2023 19:56

Went out for birthday lunch with DH. Then m&s done in meal for two for dinner. Not into lots of fuss.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 17/09/2023 19:56

I did a lot…I was recently divorced and my abusive alcoholic ExH had never, ever made an effort for my birthday, so once I was rid of him I decided to make up for loads of rubbish birthdays when we were together! I went to Liverpool for the night with 3 friends, then the following weekend I also had dinner in a lovely restaurant for about 20 female friends. I also I had a cocktail and cake party in my garden and then my fella at the time took me to Venice for 3 nights. So yes, it was probably OTT but i was making up for a lot of very miserable years! I hope you have a fab time, whatever you decide to do 😊

Nothing. I'd just started a new job

Pebbles16 · 17/09/2023 20:01

I had a lovely girls' fizz party (DH was butler/drinks monitor) with mini (15 minute) treatments. About eight friends. Then the boys joined for a fabulous Sri Lankan dinner. Sadly the restaurant is now a Franco Manca - which is fine, but the Sri Lankan restaurant was better. My late 30s were shocking and I really wanted to thank my friends who had been so supportive.
My 50th was celebrated with norovirus. It pretty much summed up how I felt about the situation!

FunkyMonks · 17/09/2023 20:04

I want to go to vegas for my 40th I was heavily pregnant with my first for my 30th so I want to actually enjoy my 40th child free with DH as selfish as that may seem 🤣🤣.

Jeffreybubblesbombom · 17/09/2023 20:06

Went to Dublin for a long weekend ( with now an ex b/f).

notprincehamlet · 17/09/2023 20:06

Ran the NYC marathon

continentallentil · 17/09/2023 20:08

Hired a cottage for a long weekend and went away with a bunch of friends (+ some kids that couldn’t be got shot of)

crew2022 · 17/09/2023 20:08

Afternoon tea with friends at a London hotel then meal with family

mynameiscalypso · 17/09/2023 20:09

I'm just organising mine now. I've booked a private room in a restaurant nearby for 25 people - mainly my family and my group of uni friends. It will be a Sunday lunch thing because lots of people (including us) have small children. On the day of my actual birthday, DH and I are going to go out for lunch while DS is at school.

Mumsgirls · 17/09/2023 20:10

Florida for mine, Beach resort thing in day, Disney dinner place at night, got asked for ID for drinks lol. Daughters were the right age, we had a week in Orlando, then a week in a Gulf coast beach resort, so best of all worlds. Loved it, have been back to the gulf a few times, but not Disney, once was plenty. Lovely memories though

Meadowflower2023 · 17/09/2023 20:10

DH booked the Beamish Hall Hotel for the weekend, we had a day at Beamish Living Museum and a day in Durham, Christmas week birthday so it was lovely and festive.

TodayForTomorrow · 17/09/2023 20:11

DH and I are both 40 in a couple of years and we are hoping to do a child-free break somewhere interesting. Considering Vietnam.

StrandedStarfish · 17/09/2023 20:12

I hired a cinema and my friends and I dressed in ball gowns and tiaras. We danced through sing-a-long-a Mamma Mia and ate Costco cake and drank Prosecco

DarkDarkNight · 17/09/2023 20:15

I took my son away to a theme park for the weekend. If I’m honest I couldn’t face the visits off family, it would have felt like a pity party. Everyone I know seemed to have big parties thrown for them or weekends away with friends. I had a lovely time and didn’t really think about my birthday.

Matildahoney · 17/09/2023 20:16

I wanted to go to Vegas but fell pregnant, then miscarried. So stayed at Chewton Glen in a treehouse for a few nights, then afternoon tea with family & a Chinese with the other side of family.

user1471462701 · 17/09/2023 20:16

Ran a marathon and then away for the weekend with family

WorriedMillie · 17/09/2023 20:17

We took DD to soft play in the morning (whhhyyyy? 🤣🤣🤣), then OH and I took off to Stratford upon Avon in the afternoon. We had drinks out, then dinner and a night in a nice hotel :)

That was the plan for my 40th, but with a few more people and family travelling down quite a distance. Dh had organised a cake, performer, decorations. New outfit, hair and makeup booked. Bday was at the weekend but Weds (think it was Weds) Boris announced Covid was happening and we were all going to die unless we stayed at home and saw noone. That was the end of that.

TheUsualChaos · 17/09/2023 20:19

Went on holiday, just me, DH and the DC. It was lovely.

caringcarer · 17/09/2023 20:20

We bought a holiday home and got it 2 days before my 40th birthday so I had a great time. We stayed for 6 weeks summer holidays that first year and various family joined us for a week then left and someone else came.
