Just realised something didn’t scan at self serve

Was doing a top up shop earlier in a major supermarket we frequent multiple times a week.

An item that cost £3 did not scan. DH and I were there together and we definitely attempted to scan everything, I’m sure I heard a beep for every item. Paid the £15 total and left the shop. I thought it was cheaper than expected but there had been a few offers on, so I looked over the receipt to check the offers and noticed the item missing from the list. Oops!

I noticed this as we had got home. I’m mortified and think I should contact customer service. DH thinks not to; 1) they may think it’s more suspicious, 2) they are unlikely to care as it wasn’t deliberate and it’s a very large business making lots of profit, and we are regular shoppers there.

I’m worrying now that they might have noticed in some way and check next time? What would you do here.

I’d just be pissed off it wasn’t something more expensive tbh

TheInterceptor · 16/09/2023 18:11

Was there not a shout of 'unexpected item in the bagging area'?

BingoandBlueyForever · 16/09/2023 18:12

It will quite likely cost more for customer service to deal with the issue than the company will have lost from you forgetting to scan the item.

Sugarfree23 · 16/09/2023 18:13

Op forget about it. Think how much they are saving by having you doing the job that they would have paid a person to do.

fruitstick · 16/09/2023 18:24

I did this. I phoned customer services, they found the transaction on the system and they said next time you come in, go to the customer services desk and pay.

When I did that, the woman looked so horrified, she said she had no idea how to find it on the system or put it through, so I should not worry about it.

Conscience cleared Grin

Fizzadora · 16/09/2023 18:27

Well why didn't you get "unexpected item in the bagging area".
Unless you didn't put it in the bagging area😀

Abra1t · 16/09/2023 18:28

Scan it next time but put it back on the shelf?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 16/09/2023 18:31

Let it go. I reckon over the years the times I've left something in store that I've paid for, plus the offers that didn't scan balance out the odd item that wasn't charged, and me and Tesco are even.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/09/2023 18:33

It was an accident.

If they were that bothered they’d man the tills.

Greenfinch7 · 16/09/2023 18:39

I have been overcharged so many times and only noticed later, or paid for vegetables that turned out to be rotten and slimy... on the incredibly rare occasions that something comes out in my favour, I know that it doesn't balance out the many mishaps I have had! I wouldn't worry about this one...

RedAndWhiteCarnations · 16/09/2023 18:46

£3?!?
Seriously, just forget about it.

oopsthishappened · 16/09/2023 19:02

Thanks everyone! :)

Buy the same item again next week, and donate it to the food bank.

Cheesandcrackers · 16/09/2023 19:14

You should go into politics! Everyone here would vote for you.

DNAwrangler · 16/09/2023 19:20

If just forget it tbh.

but I’m Not sure how buying it again and giving to the food bank helps. It’s not hers to donate so she’d still have ‘taken’ one from the store.

DNAwrangler · 16/09/2023 19:21

If you’re bothered buy another next week/month and scan it twice?

NotMeNoNo · 16/09/2023 19:22

Well I've just been overcharged £1.50 by scanning something twice, so I've kind of paid it forward for you!

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 16/09/2023 19:44

I work in retail. TBH I would just put it down as one of those things. It’s buttons compared to what is lost through brazen shoplifting, fraud, fake currency etc. and companies factor in the possibility of this kind of loss when they install self checkouts. My bugbear is when customers leave the checkout too quickly after doing contactless, before knowing whether their payment has gone through or not.

Sugarfish · 16/09/2023 20:04

It’s three quid and it was an accident. Personally I’d look at it as a win!

if you feel bad put some money in the next charity bucket you see and think of it as putting something good into the world from it.

NotSayingItsTheMasonsBut · 16/09/2023 20:34

The only way they would have noticed is if they'd done one of the random checks. They are watching on CCTV for high value items, alcohol and meat especially.
If it makes you feel bad just give £3 away to something or someone more needy than a multinational, you'll cost them more money speaking to someone about it !

viques · 16/09/2023 20:36

Put a donation in the food bank box next time you go to the shop. Shop hets payment, someone who needs it gets food. Win win.

MammaTo · 16/09/2023 20:46

Take it as one of life’s small wins.

Invalidusername88 · 16/09/2023 20:49

FFS 😡this thread makes me angry.

Blanketpolicy · 16/09/2023 20:50

Was it not being weighed on the other side when you bagged it?

MaryLivingOnDreamsAndCustardCreams · 16/09/2023 20:51

These accidents would have been factored in by the supermarkets when installing self check outs. Just imagine how much money in wages they have saved.

Find something else worth worrying about.
