Just realised something didn’t scan at self serve

Was doing a top up shop earlier in a major supermarket we frequent multiple times a week.

An item that cost £3 did not scan. DH and I were there together and we definitely attempted to scan everything, I’m sure I heard a beep for every item. Paid the £15 total and left the shop. I thought it was cheaper than expected but there had been a few offers on, so I looked over the receipt to check the offers and noticed the item missing from the list. Oops!

I noticed this as we had got home. I’m mortified and think I should contact customer service. DH thinks not to; 1) they may think it’s more suspicious, 2) they are unlikely to care as it wasn’t deliberate and it’s a very large business making lots of profit, and we are regular shoppers there.

I’m worrying now that they might have noticed in some way and check next time? What would you do here.

Was there not a shout of 'unexpected item in the bagging area'?

Also curious about this 🤔

Howtosolveit · 16/09/2023 21:00

I would be totally unbothered by this. They are not going to come after you, OP! It was a genuine mistake. It would be different if it were a small business, but the massive profit-making machines like Tesco et al are not going to feel it. I like the idea from a pp that if you feel bad, you could buy something for the food bank instead.

I thought at self scan check outs it's all done by weight, so if you put something in the bagging area that hasn't scanned it will flag up, and won't let you put anything else through until an assistant sorts it out.

RedRobyn2021 · 16/09/2023 21:02

And I thought I was an over thinker 😂

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 16/09/2023 21:06

Their fault for making you do their job. Forget about it

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/09/2023 21:10

How did you get through the disparity in weight triggering a 'please scan' message?

That sounds more like your DP didn't scan something and put it straight into a bag instead of placing it on the weighing side where it checks everything has been scanned.

@TheInterceptor nope. No scales come to mention it. Only time someone comes over is if it’s age restricted products they need to approve

They're embedded into the metal bit you're supposed to put the items on once they're scanned.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/09/2023 21:15

Best hand yourself in 😄 don't worry about it.

Crepesandconans · 16/09/2023 21:17

I've done this a few times, but also been charged double/wrong lying a few times so I just think it evens itself out over the year tbh.

Cascais · 16/09/2023 21:17

Go back and pay

I know. They’re not at the self serves in that particular store though, you have to weigh produce on a separate scale and it never kicks off about bagging being incorrect weights

Crepesandconans · 16/09/2023 21:18

Don't know where the lying came from,I just meant I've been overcharged/charged double enough times to cancel mistakes out x

NutellaNut · 16/09/2023 17:35

Don’t worry about it. If it bothers your conscience, just stick the equivalent amount in a charity box at the store next time.

Yep do this. Or donate an item for the same amount to the food bank.

FindingMeno · 16/09/2023 21:20

You did your best in good faith.
If these big companies want to avoid paying actual people and providing jobs, they need to factor in expected losses .

Crepesandconans · 16/09/2023 21:21

If someone comes bk into my work and tells me that they weren't charged for an item etc,I just tell them not to worry. If we can earn £9 billion a year,we can cope with an unpaid ham sandwich here and there.

Something to consider is when you pass over in life and are eagerly walking up the steps to the Pearly Gates knowing you will be reunited with loved ones who have gone before you.....

Saint Peter might take you to one side and say to you, "Just one thing, about that Pot Noodle you didn't pay for in 2023....."

You run the risk of being turned away from heaven.Sad

Why not buy something for £3 the next time you go shopping and put it in the food bank trolley on your way out to ensure Saint Peter will give you a high five as he lets you in through the Pearly gates.

This is a joke right? 🤣🤣🤣

Where is this store lol? Asking for a friend.

northernstars · 16/09/2023 21:39

We use the Tesco self scan and pack yokes. As you get to the tills your bags are all packed so there's no 'weighing' of products. Fruit and veg are done in that section.

mollyfolk · 16/09/2023 21:48

You beat the system 🤣. The supermarket wlll survive the economic loss. I’m sure if go back they will look at you odd.

MonumentalLentil · 16/09/2023 22:00

In the days of free carrier bags there was a woman on the checkout who used to peel off a big pile of them one at a time so that they hid your shopping as you tried to pack it. Twice I got home and found I had paid for stuff she had hidden and I had left behind. Made sure to move the bags out of the way after that, if I couldn't avoid her till.

Your item has balanced that out, don't worry about it.

MargaretThursday · 16/09/2023 22:01

I do it as a test to myself. If it's enough that I would go back if they'd overcharged me that much, then I go back if I've underpaid. £3 is at the maybe/maybe not level.
