Lucy Letby looking to appeal her convictions

How on earth does she think that's going to go?

Lucy Letby to appeal

(MSN link from the Telegraph)

I can't see what grounds she would have after a 10 month trial with all the evidence against her. And who would take her on as a client?

I can't imagine on what grounds she would be granted appeal tbh

xsquared · 15/09/2023 23:51

Me neither. It seems her only defence was "It wasn't me".

Still, there will be plenty of LL supporters insisting that the convictions are unsafe, the defence did a rubbish job, the evidence against her was all circumstantial etc. Almost cult like.

BIossomtoes · 16/09/2023 00:04

Goss did an absolutely brilliant job of making that conviction bullet proof. She hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell of a successful appeal, in fact she’ll be lucky if she doesn’t find herself back in court for retrial on the cases without verdicts at some point. How dare she waste more of our money like this?

The pursuit of justice to run its course, is cult like?

Count me as a cultist then.

Justice has been served according to the jury who had 10 months on this trial amd access to more evidence than you amd I are privy to.

It's cultish to bandwagon along the conspiracy theorists.

Justice will be served, when the law has run its course, it hasn't yet.

AllWeWantToDo · 27/09/2023 19:40

Appeals are cheap. Let her get on with it, then hopefully after the re trial next year she can fade away into oblivion. Well as much as any serial killer can

Isthisexpected · 27/09/2023 19:42

This will be a blow to the victims' families as what was something to come to terms with and find a way to live with is now going to remain an open wound.

Insommmmnia · 27/09/2023 19:44

Because that's the way the law works. And whilst it's easy when someone like this comes along to think the law shouldn't work this way, there have been times in the past where convictions have been made incorrectly and a civilised fair country therefore needs an appeals process.

It's highly unlikely she will even get to the point of appeal with this, but the route to do so needs to exist.

It has on the cases for which she’s been found guilty unless she miraculously finds grounds for appeal. Of course she’s now going to be retried for Baby K so you’re right, there’s still a way to go.

Embarrassednamechangeadoddle · 27/09/2023 19:45

This must be so upsetting for all the families involved. I suppose given she has such a long sentence for such awful crimes she had nothing to loose by appealing.

OuiRagamuffin · 27/09/2023 19:52

Listening to one of those YouTube lawyers wanted to remind the people who have got behind LL and made this their cause, they seem to think that beyond reasonable doubt means removing ALL doubt. But they're wrong. It means 12 people listened to the mountain of circumstantial evidence and they are convinced beyond reasonable doubt.

"12 people listened to the mountain of circumstantial evidence and they are convinced beyond reasonable doubt"

And now a Judge will decide if they got it right, if he decides they didn't the appeal will progress, what happens at the actual appeal, if any, is another matter.

lubylo · 27/09/2023 20:12

"Of course she’s now going to be retried for Baby K so you’re right, there’s still a way to go"

If she were to win any appeal, if the appeal judges call a miscarriage of justice, she won't be tried for anything else, it would be over.

Wrong. The jury failed to reach a verdict so a retrial is possible regardless of the outcome of an appeal - in the extremely unlikely event of her being granted one.

It would be more likely to go back to trial, an appeal judge won't call a miscarriage of justice on all those counts

lubylo · 27/09/2023 20:23

No correct actually, the trial would be and all in it deemed tainted.

I don’t think you understand how this works. She was tried on 22 charges and received 14 whole life tariffs. Every single one of those is separate and would be considered separately if she was given leave to appeal. The chances of overturning 14 convictions is wafer thin to fuck all.

Libertass · 27/09/2023 20:30

That’s not a surprise at all. Letby has absolutely nothing to lose by appealing. The evidence against her was almost entirely circumstantial. She knows that the jury in her trial couldn’t reach verdicts on some of the charges against her and had to return majority verdicts on others.
Why wouldn’t she appeal? She doesn’t have to prove her innocence, but she does have to persuade a judge that the convictions were unsafe.

itsgettingweird · 27/09/2023 20:32

The judge doesn't grant appeal because they think the jury was wrong.

They grant appeal if there's some new evidence or a point of law wasn't followed that means the jury may not rule guilt beyond reasonable doubt anymore.

I'm going with fuck all

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 27/09/2023 20:49

She deserves the same opportunity for justice as everyone else.

Her request should be considered and accepted or refused based on the information provided. Just as it would for everyone else. She is not special, deserves no special treatment, to be thought of any differently than any other convicted murderer.

Don't be daft.

Sane and sensible people know this is her getting the best defense advice.

If there is something that needs to be considered she'll be heard. If there isn't she won't.

Anyone who chooses to not understand that this is simply the process needs to take a deep breath

AllWeWantToDo · 27/09/2023 21:10

Well not everyone tries to appeal their conviction or sentence but I think it was obvious she would give it a go
