Has anyone been told the gender of a baby at a scan?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant with my second and I feel like I've heard so many "being told the wrong gender" stories I'm panicking🤣

We had a scan at 16 weeks and shows it's clearly a boy but a few people have told me they had what they thought was an accurate scan only to find out at a later date or at the birth the baby was the opposite gender!

Has this happened to you?

Title should say wrong gender.

Should probably say sex rather than gender tbh!
I was told correctly with dd and ds.

Thatsmorethanhalf · 15/09/2023 15:49

Sex surely, rather than gender?

My friend was told at first she’s having a boy and when she was 7 months pregnant they told her it’s a girl and it was a girl

Epicstorm · 15/09/2023 15:52

Someone I know was told she was having a girl right up to the birth. She wasn’t.

DreamItDoIt · 15/09/2023 15:55

Yeah my baby was assigned non binary however it's sex was a boy Wink

toadasoda · 15/09/2023 15:59

No because I didn't want to know, but at the birth when the baby was finally flung onto my tummy after being pulled out the nurse told me we had a healthy baby girl. Baby was then whisked away to be cleaned and about a minute later the nurse turned around with an awful look on her face and said 'did i just say girl, cos I meant to say boy'. She was so upset and embarrassed 😳

FanFckingTastic · 15/09/2023 16:02

I was told that I was having a boy so it was a big surprise when my daughter was born!

PinkRoses1245 · 15/09/2023 16:19

Title should say wrong sex. it's only their best guess from what they can see. and it doesn't matter.

MargaretThursday · 15/09/2023 17:12

I know two who were told confidently (both told girls, actually boy) wrong, and two more that were told "think but not sure" and were wrong (one of each way)

I was told girl (correctly) for both DD2 and (3 years later) DD3 at the 20 week scans.

With DD1 we lived in a different area and were not told because the policy of the hospital there was not to tell at all unless it was revealed definitely during an amniocentesis. I had a fairly strong feeling that she was a girl though, based on nothing really. I was right, though wouldn't have been bothered either way.

PosyPrettyToes · 15/09/2023 17:23

My sister was told the wrong sex for her eldest. She thought she was having a girl and got a bit of a shock when my nephew was born!

cadburyegg · 15/09/2023 17:47

I didn't find out with ds1 but they were correct with ds2

Why are you panicking? You get what you're given and just because it's born one thing, doesn't it'll identify as that later

Gurthnamuckla · 15/09/2023 17:53

No. I could see his penis quite clearly at the 18 week scan. It didn’t need trained diagnostic skills.

Playing devil's advocate here, if I believed sex was biological and therefore you couldn't change sex, surely in those cases sex and gender are synonymous? If I believed there were only 2 genders would it not be the case that I could say gender instead of sex, as was so widely acceptable before?

And in the OP's defence, if you pay privately all the scans I've seen to determine whether you're having a boy or a girl are actually called gender scans here.

mycoffeecup · 15/09/2023 17:58

Why does it matter if it's right or wrong?

If OP starts buying loads of blue 'boy' possibly named stuff for a boy and it turns out it's a girl? Or other way?

Torganer · 15/09/2023 19:13

I had an NHS scan around that time and they said, ā€˜do you want to know the sex, I’m about 80% sure’. I didn’t want to know, but from that I deduced it was a boy as didn’t think they would be so sure if it was a girl! So I said, ā€˜you think it’s a boy then’, and they said yes! We had a boy!

HideTheCroissants · 15/09/2023 19:17

I was told the correct sex for both of my children. I don’t actually know anyone who ended up being told wrong. I had my ā€œbabiesā€ over 20 years ago though.

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 15/09/2023 19:31

I was told the correct sex for both babies.

Dc1 they said they thought she was a girl.

Dc2 they said definitely a boy.

I think if you are told a boy then they've seen a penis and it's very unlikely to be wrong. If you are told girl then there's always a possibility that they missed something on the scan, so it's less certain.

Doggymummar · 15/09/2023 19:34

I was called Jason until I was born as my mum was told she was having a boy. I'm not called Jason anymore.
