Has anyone been told the gender of a baby at a scan?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant with my second and I feel like I've heard so many "being told the wrong gender" stories I'm panicking🤣

We had a scan at 16 weeks and shows it's clearly a boy but a few people have told me they had what they thought was an accurate scan only to find out at a later date or at the birth the baby was the opposite gender!

Has this happened to you?

One of my good friends had three boys and she was told she was having a girl - a very much longed for daughter.

She has four boys now

ScoobyBooby · 15/09/2023 20:11

Got 3 of my children’s sex correct. Eldest we didn’t find out until birth

crumblylancs · 15/09/2023 20:11

It's so boring everyone piling on with "should be sex" comments- do you really need to say exactly the same thing as the first person and everyone else since

Everyone knows what the OP means and it's hardly a surprise the word gender gets used instead when gender scans and gender reveals are what most people in normal life call them

I found out at birth, im surprised more people don’t tbh. I felt like I was weird for doing it that way because everyone I know seems to find out at the earliest opportunity.

They do get it wrong occasionally, but generally they will say if they’re not 100% sure, eg I’ve had friends be told the scanner is 90% sure.

Ds1 - told boy at 20w scan and he was a boy.
Ds2 - told girl at 20w scan. Later nhs scan sonographer seemed surprised and said baby may not be a girl but legs firmly twisted together so couldn't quite tell. He was a boy!
Ds3 - had a private scan at 17w where he was obviously a boy without the sonographer even having to try from the first shot!

jenrain · 15/09/2023 20:29

I had private NIPTs with mine which is about 99% accurate (was correct for both of mine). Had them for genetic screening but useful for knowing the sex accurately and much sooner than the 20 week scan.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/09/2023 20:37

Way back when ultrasound was less sophisticated than it is now, we weren't supposed to disclose the apparent sex of the baby to the mother. However, an obstetric registrar colleague of mine sneaked his wife in for a scan and told her she was having a girl. They already had a boy, and she was angry and upset at first when she gave birth to another boy. Some years later, one of my patients was told she was having a boy at 20 weeks and was insistent throughout the rest of her pregnancy that this was wrong and she "knew" the baby would be a girl. She was right. Woo!

I found out in advance with two of mine. In both cases I was told the correct sex.

If OP starts buying loads of blue 'boy' possibly named stuff for a boy and it turns out it's a girl? Or other way?

Yes I forgot that it's a criminal offence to put a baby girl in a blue babygrow.

Well blue for a boy and pink for a girl actually is an example of gender, not sex.

Therunecaster · 15/09/2023 20:42

Yes, told I was having a girl but had a boy! Quite a shock

I have a boy and a girl. The only one of them who had a blue babygrow in newborn size was my daughter.

When I was expecting my son I bought gender neutral things, planning to use them again for a second baby.

Second time round I refused to tell my mum what I was having but she decided I was having a boy and bought blue and green babygrows. I had a girl and she wore them anyway.

TheQuestToStopPigeonWoppie · 15/09/2023 20:48

For us, we weren't so concerned with the expected sex as whether we should expect a pirate or a ninja. Strangely the sonographer didn't want to make that call... It was a pirate.

My son spent his first 6 months largely in pink babygrows from his older sister as I was damned if I was going to buy new when they grow out of them so quickly!

ToxicPositivity · 15/09/2023 20:54

I've had 4, all been the sex they were determined to be at "gender scan". Had my twins scan at 15 weeks and I sexed them myself with the consultants confirmation. They're 9-14 and still the same sex...

Theroom · 15/09/2023 21:02

I only know one person where they were told incorrectly - they were told girl and it was a boy.

They couldn't tell for me due to the baby's position. At a later scan they said 80% sure girl, but I didn't take it too seriously after what happened to my friend. Actually, they were right. I'd rather not have found out until birth but husband wanted to know.

The word "gender" can be used to refer to the condition of being physically male or female. You have the right to choose to use either the word "gender" or "sex".

The trouble is that it can either be used as a synonym for your sex, or it can be used to mean the literal opposite.

Sex is much clearer (for now, at least).

Sunsetred · 15/09/2023 21:47

@MargotBamborough Ah ha, nice explanation. Thank you.

Because it's a load of crap, Jesus all this choose your gender shit, you're either a woman or a man

OP is a brave woman putting the 'g' word in her title! I'm convinced there are people who log on just to do a search for this word so they can join any random thread and start harping on about it.

What does everything think for baby gender? I have had a gut feeling on it being a boy. Bump is low, skin is glowing etc but now not sure whether this show boy or girl?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Has anyone been told the gender of a baby at a scan?

People can choose to use whatever word they like, but using it doesn't make it the right word.
