Apparently the biggest news story of the year is going to break over the weekend

It’s all overTwitter, or X as it’s now called. One of the Sunday papers is working on a massive story and all staff weekend leave has been cancelled. Channel 4 is showing an episode of ‘Dispatches’ tomorrow night at 9pm but haven’t said what it’s about and lots of people are putting two and two together and saying it’s in conjunction with the following days papers.

William and Kate to separate and divorce. So obvious.

66rabbits · 15/09/2023 15:08

Could it be about trans issues?

StanleyGoodspeed · 15/09/2023 15:08

The discovery of Bigfoot😂

hotteabag · 15/09/2023 15:08

I wondered if it was about a certain downing street employee given a controversial peerage?

Charles is abdicating on health grounds

Wink

"Done it for a year: wasn't worth the wait!"

FallopianTubeTrain · 15/09/2023 15:09

The whole George Osborne thing sunk very quickly. Wonder if Fleet Street have been working overtime on those allegations in the poison pen letter and have a few conclusions to share?

(That the delightful national treasure that he is is of course innocent of all allegations, of course)

FatOaf · 15/09/2023 15:09

When you say "biggest news story of the year", do you mean like the government collapsing? Or is this some more utterly trivial "celebrity" froth?

MorrisZapp · 15/09/2023 15:09

At this point who would actually be surprising? Unless it's Dame Judi Dench herself this is unlikely to be 'explosive'.

Mojodojocasahaus · 15/09/2023 15:10

Hi ho hi hi it’s off to tattle I go…

Why is that 'so obvious'?

Rollingdownland · 15/09/2023 15:11

Love all the po-faced people tutting that we're enjoying gossip while terrible things are happening elsewhere.

If we had to be po-faced every time terrible things happened elsewhere we'd be po-faced THE WHOLE FREAKING TIME!

Interesting the person who mentioned Beth Rigby being off air for ages - I hadn't noticed this (went right off Sky News in covid) but they're right. However I don't think she's a big enough name for it to be that big a deal.

Rummykitten · 15/09/2023 15:12

@placemats wouldn’t that be very sudden and out of the blue? When it was Charles and Diana, the signs were there for ages and the whole thing was painfully drawn out…

Maybe something that could lead to the government collapsing? One lives in hope.

Fifireee · 15/09/2023 15:13

Dan Wootton has got away with his crimes Scott free so I expect this story will go the same way.

placemats · 15/09/2023 15:13

Trying to think of a British film actor famous enough to merit such a scandal. (it better not be anyone involved in either of the two Paddington films)

Rummykitten · 15/09/2023 15:14

Maybe more allegations about Andrew? From young women in the UK this time?

The press have been on a massive Kate charm offensive lately

Oioicaptain · 15/09/2023 15:14

I know a TV celebrity make presenter scandal that is yet to make the news. It's salacious if you like gossip, but rather tedious imo.

Oioicaptain · 15/09/2023 15:15

Male. Not make

The signs are there with William and Kate. Perhaps William is a bit of a scoundrel.

FatOaf · 15/09/2023 15:15

You can enjoy gossip all you like. Just don't refer to it as news, and don't expect others to want to listen to/read about it. There is a reason why I don't watch television, and it's because 99.99999% of the people on it (i.e. everyone except Victoria Coren Mitchell) are profoundly uninteresting.

RoseAndRose · 15/09/2023 15:18

NASA was releasing a report on aliens today, but I don't think it can be that as they wouldn't have a programme ready to air, nor would the different media feel obliged to play nicely.

So, someone's got a scoop, and if it is Dispatches so that's fairly serious current events. It won't be sleb twaddle, but it might be something more systemic in the entertainment industry.

Full extent of sewerage scandal? More on RAAC? - not exactly breaking news as both issues known, but probably lots more to come out.

Or the emerging evidence on the longer term effects of COVID? Known in academia, but not featuring in mainstream news because it doesn't fit the "just crack on" agenda, and no-one wants to think about bodily harm. But I doubt that's a 90 minute expose.

IClaudine · 15/09/2023 15:18

FatOaf as you don't watch TV you won't understand that Despatches doesn't generally deal in tawdry celeb stories. This might be something with a political slant, I reckon. Maybe involving Johnson.

ZoeCM · 15/09/2023 15:18

I can't work out what "need a Hip replacement?" or "fund a mentalist" could mean. Any ideas?
