XL bully’s to be banned

Tonightsthenight91 · 15/09/2023 12:11

So what will happen? There are so many breeders of these dogs. I can think of at least 10 breeders near me that I see on Instagram.

what will happen to the ones people already have as pets? And what about pocket bully’s?

These dogs have the muscle tone of great white sharks. You wouldn’t be wandering around with one of those would you? These people are crazy and irresponsible

Cite your sources on that claim please.

I have no love for the breed but hysterical comments like this don't help anyone.

What’s hysterical about it? I imagine shark attacks are far rarer than XL bully attacks are.

You can't see how saying a dog has the "muscle tone of a great white shark" isn't a ridiculous and unhelpful comment?

etherealfae · 17/09/2023 10:46

not sure if it's already been said but they don't care about public safety, that's not what this is about, they've recognised people are making thousands off breeding these dogs (which is still wrong regardless) probably majority tax free paying in cash etc, and the gov aren't having any of it! If public safety was paramount they'd be doing more to stop knife crime etc, not banning a breed of dog when they could instate a license to prove you're a sensible owner and cabable of keeping them safely, or something similar.

All about the money as usual Confused

I don't know why people think bringing up aggressive toy breeds helps their cause of defending bullies - doesn't it just highlight even more why bullies are a problem? A man was killed in the street by two xl bullies yesterday; if he'd been attacked by a pair of small dogs he would still be alive. Aggressive chihuahuas don't pose anything like the same danger.

That's what I thought too. Is she trying to get ALL dogs banned? Because I can see that happening at some point anyway. Especially with the focus now on nett zero.

Banana1979 · 18/09/2023 09:47

Two bounded up to me today I was sick with fear . They were maaaaasssiiveee one is as big as a bull from those Spanish bullfighteinh rings and the dog was just as wide . I was with my six year old
I am seriously planning on carrying a weapon so can stick it in the jugular if something happens and that goes for any large dog
keep your dogs on a f*** lead !! How hard is it ??

Please listen. Southend Dog Training talks sense. We must stand behind the innocent dogs that are molded by humans. Basically pawns. We must licence breeders and owners and soon the awful ones will stop trading and keeping these breeds, leaving just the responsible good ones. Dogs sold for pennies and bred with no legislation end up being used and exploited creating bad breeding with dogs with poor personalities and upbringing. On animal watch I’ve NEVER met an aggressive American Bully, but I have met hundreds of aggressive toy dogs. I’m fed up of MPs trying to take the easy road, we need dog licences to stop puppy farmers and all manner of back yard breeders so let’s tackle everything in one fell swoop!

What a load of dogshit. So much wittering about it not being the dog but the owner.

It's not fucking chihuahuas ripping the faces off children and killing adults too, is it?

Ban them, with massive fines for anyone flouting the ban, and a conviction for GBH for the owner if they maul someone, manslaughter at least if they kill someone.

IVFNewbie · 18/09/2023 09:57

It's quite simple IMO. In public, all dogs should either be on a lead or wearing a muzzle.

Cockerdileteeth · 18/09/2023 10:21

"And no animal should be sold until neutered/spade at the cost of the breeder to ensure no "accidental" puppies"

Even if you wanted all dog breeds to die out in a generation - it's really not OK to neuter/spay 2 or 3 month old puppies. Early neutering causes a host of problems, especially in larger breed dogs, because they need the hormones through to maturity for normal development. It increases the risk of joint problems, cruciate tears, some cancers, and can drive behavioural problems - including, counter-productively, fear reactivity and aggression. Not the right way forward at all.

Totally agree with this, you have to wait for a female to essentially go through puberty before having them spayed. Most vets would not spay or neuter a dog until a certain age has been reached so this is a pointless point. There is no way a breeder is going to keep a litter of puppies until they are at least 1 years old.

RunningFromInsanity · 18/09/2023 15:07

No one is saying that every pet XL bully is a rabid beast. But the breed is genetically predisposed for aggression. It’s fact.
Every breed gone into the making of an XL bully is historically used for fighting, hunting or killing.

Of course, each individual dog is then influenced by its lineage, upbringing, owner etc which is why many live their whole lives without aggression.
But a good owner and the right upbringing could make a husky into a sheepdog, or allow greyhounds to live with cats.
Doesn’t mean it’s normal for the breed.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 15:12

Honestly I hope they seize and euthanise them. And I wouldn’t feel sorry for the idiots who buy them as “I’m so hard” show dogs either

The man who died probably hadn't met an aggressive XL Bully either. Until he did.

Saying she's met hundreds of aggressive small dogs shows that she was able to defend herself against them surely? If aggressive toy dogs were the size and strength of an XL Bully she'd likely be dead by now.

I don't think any dog should be aggressive. The difference is with large powerful dogs is they are much more likely to severely injure and kill. And ones that come from a long lineage of fighting dogs are even more of a risk.

How about the musculature of a Hippo... Two outdoor shots , the a further TEN to kill the beast.. {police rounds, so not exactly small}

This is the dog related to many in UK.

Killer Nico.

Mother injured, daughter killed in dog attack

A mother was injured and her 4-year-old daughter was killed in a dog attack in Houma.

I agree

but other large breeds would do the same Cain Corso for example. And other large breeds
the problem is the xl is a popular dog at the moment and in many areas used for a status image . When the ban is into 6 months on
its worrying what the next dangerous dog is going to be .

I think they need to say that all dogs over a certain weight should classified as needing a licence and subject to more stringent controls. Home check, dog training certificate, leads & muzzles.

Szara · 31/10/2023 23:07

The dogs are monsters and the owners all seem uneducated. Why anyone would want a family pet that could eat your child in one bite is beyond me. The ban can't come soon enough.

That is generalising too much. St Bernards, Newfoundland's and Irish Wolfhounds are large dogs, but not problematic ones. If breeders are going to create a new attack dog, they wouldn't be using these breeds, so why should they have home checks and be muzzled?

AhBiscuits · 01/11/2023 06:51

The ban is fantastic news. I have experience of many different breeds of dog and have never had to fight their genetics and train them not to kill. They have no place as pets.

The back yard breeders are flocking to Gumtree to try and offload their mutts for buttons. I wonder what will happen to all the unwanted dogs.

user701 · 01/11/2023 06:57

I have always had dogs and am about to get a new puppy. I still think all dogs should be on leads in public other than in special secure dog exercising fields.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 01/11/2023 07:12

@AhBiscuits

The ban wording is quite clever. You can’t sell, abandon, gift or give away an XL Bully dog from the beginning of Dec onwards. Any dog over a year old will have to be neutered by next June.

So you do have to wonder what choice the breeders with puppies due in post Dec will do.

There is a 9-week period until the ban on selling comes into force to allow puppies that were bred before this legislation was introduced to be legally sold

Puppies born after 31st Dec deadline are likely to have been bred after this ban has come in, so honestly having to PTS the puppies will be all the breeders fault.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/11/2023 08:52

They’re not all going to be PTS. But AFAIK it will be illegal to breed them, and they’ll have to be neutered by a certain date, and muzzled and on a lead when out.
