American Bully XL to be banned by end of year

Rishi Sunak has just announced these dogs are to be banned.

Good riddance - who needs a big aggressive dog like that? It’s hardly a family pet.

I do however suspect the ven diagram of ‘people that own an American Bully XL’ and ‘people who will be interested in following this law’ may have a limited overlap however.

Delighted with this news

Why isn't there a Dog Licence system in place? Every dog should be licenced, chipped and wear a visible collar? A small admin fee for each licence could pay for dog wardens and all the necessary admin. Checks could be kept on the suitability of people to look after their dog. A bit like having a driving licence and insurance.

Agree. In fact the same should apply to owning any pet. The lack of regulation, or homing standards in this country is disgraceful. However, the type of people who would license their dogs will generally be responsible people in the first place. The type of people who will avoid licensing, correct homing and training will go underground and are exactly the people who's behaviour we are trying to curtail. It just ends up as another tax on law abiding people. Do we even have the resources to police this? I agree we should, but I'm not sure how it would work in practice?

I don't live in the UK and have actually never seen an xl bully in real life but from what I see people posting on the internet I am really confused as to what an xl bully actually is? There seems to be a huge variation in what the dogs people are calling xl bullies look like so what is to stop someone saying oh it's a mastiff cross or whatever, not an xl bully? People say DNA tests but what DNA are you looking for because XL bully isn't actually a breed as such?

Surely it would be better to have a restricted breed list with breeds like Mastiffs, American bulldogs, cane corsos etc and all mixes of those breeds need to be muzzled and kept on short leads when out in public at all times. And figure out some way to enforce this?

As of 2015, there were 3,001 Pit bull terriers on the Index, 6 Dogo Argentinos, 0 Fila Brasilieros, and 3 Japanese Tosas.[20] As of 2018, there were 3,514 Pit bull terriers, 3 Japanese Tosas, 13 Dogo Argentinos, and 0 Fila Brazilieros

If you are going to ban a dog, ban it.
There still being pitbull types I understand as it is not a breed but a ‘type’ based physical characteristics so theoretical a Labrador x Spaniel could crate a pit bull type puppy.
But the other 3 are pure breeds so where are they coming from?

Ireland have a ‘restricted breed list’ doing just that (muzzled and on lead in public etc)

Their value has already dropped 🙌🏼 believe it or not I knew someone who bred her XL bully in order to sell the pups to help fund the deposit to BUY THEIR HOUSE! They seriously thought they could breed 8/10 of these puppies and sell for £1500 each!! Reality was they only had 7 pups and struggled to sell them, started out at advertising at £1500 and ended up selling the last 2 for under £400! She also had to spend on vets fees and thank god it failed massively or they’d have kept doing it for sure.

Good.

As effective as any measure

Sugarfree23 · 15/09/2023 13:05

I think they'll just move onto something else, Pitbull to XL bully to ?

Any owner who's dog bites should be fined or charged, a dog who kills, the owner should be done for murder.
I don't believe the general pish 'it was the first time the dog attacked'

Harsh penalties for having a dog who attacks

Devilsmommy · 15/09/2023 13:07

Thank god. I watched my neighbour get mauled to death by two of them yesterday, I'm still shaking now. The most horrific thing I've ever seen

Gillstuck · 15/09/2023 13:10

@Flamedmoth I agree it would hard to enforce compliance with a system of Dog Licencing, but many of the technical issues could be worked around? Remote chip readers might be installed on street lighting. If a dog appears without a chip, or has one that doesn't relate to its records, then this is followed up. Fines for removing chips, or not getting one in the first place could be high enough to act as a real deterrent.

I see that a licence might be seen as a tax on good owners, but as a dog lover I would pay the small licence fee if I knew it helped protect my pet and would keep others from cruelty. I'm not sure about the problem of unlicensed pets not getting medical treatment. It might lessen as unchipped dogs are taken from unsuitable owners? It wouldn't be a perfect system, but it could be combined with other initiatives.

Lordofmyflies · 15/09/2023 13:12

Good. I think there needs to be a dog license containing breed details and owner details which correlate with the chip on the dog. Perhaps that way, banned breeds can be controlled and and owners and breeders will have more information on the dog's background, genetics and temperament.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 15/09/2023 13:13

Good. I will be reporting the one on my street.

That’s utterly horrendous

Did it even make the news?

iloveeverykindofcat · 15/09/2023 13:14

I'm still confused as to how exactly an XL bully is defined. Is is an actual breed?

Devilsmommy · 15/09/2023 13:16

@EasternStandard yes it did, staffordshire. the man died and the twat owner has been arrested. hoping he gets done for murder or more likely manslaughter

Flamedmoth · 15/09/2023 13:16

iloveeverykindofcat · 15/09/2023 13:14

Nope. This will be the problem

They will have to define it first

I think there's so many breeds in the bull breed family that I can't imagine how you wouldn't accidentally include half of the staff population!

It's not a job I would feel able to manage of identifying when a staff cross, or a bull dog cross becomes an xl bully

Ohyoudodoyou · 15/09/2023 13:16

Terrifying for the victims, the horror of it all and It's awful for these dogs and the responsible owners. I've seen two of these dogs whilst out, I asked one owner about the ears and he denied he'd cropped the ears saying the dog 'arrived from America. It was a lovely dog but it's the constant danger of the unknown. It was also on some sort of rope when it clearly needed a harness, he had another dog with him and I doubt he'd be able to control them.
The other dog was with an elderly owner, big soft and very sweet dog, but again, the unpredictable nature of these animals. It's appalling that animals have been bred to be like this with genetic defects. He also struggled to control this dog, it was young and boisterous.

Prescottdanni123 · 15/09/2023 13:17

This is only going to be effective if we do something the dimwits buying them as status symbols/weapons. If we don't, will be in this exact situation next year with a different breed.

And the morons buying and selling dogs online need to be stopped as well.

peanutbuttertoasty · 15/09/2023 13:17

Excellent news.

i would also support licenses and mandatory training for all dog owners. And I say that as a dog owner. Too many unruly dogs these days and clueless owners.

Smallceramicfrog · 15/09/2023 13:18

There are four variations: standard, pocket, classic and XL.
is it just the xl that’s being banned?

AliceMcK · 15/09/2023 13:19

Thank fuck!

There was one in the petrol station the other day, if I wouldn’t have been done for driving off without paying I’d have left. Hated it staring at me panting the whole time. The owner obviously new the staff as they were all stood round talking to him while one poor guy was trying to get through the queue. The same day there was one outside a local shop so I turned around and decided to shop else where.

Dissimilitude · 15/09/2023 13:19

People really struggle with the idea that something that isn't perfectly effective is still worth doing.

Are dog breeds tricky to define? Yes. Will some people work around it? Yes. Might people move onto a different dangerous breed? No doubt. Some people flout gun laws. Doesn't mean we should repeal them - they massively increase the dangers of owning a gun, for a criminal.

Now if I see one of these things in my neighbourhood, I can get it dealt with, with the force of the law behind me. As can anyone else. This gives communities the legal backing to push back against these ridiculous animals.
