Why TF am I not losing weight?

Ozgirl75 · 13/09/2023 18:13

I’ve managed to pile on about 4kg this year - solely due to moving to the U.K. and embracing Galaxy, nice white bread and other delicious comfort food, plus stopping my usual exercise routine, although I am still exercising.
Im not dramatically overweight but I have 6kg to lose. I feel like I’ve cut out all the nice stuff and it’s still not shifting!

A normal day looks like:
No breakfast (I never have breakfast, I have a cup of tea)
Lunch - two hard boiled eggs in a salad, cucumber, red pepper, pickled cucumber, beetroot, olives. Followed by one of those naked bars. Occasionally a roll with this if I’m v hungry.
Dinner - normal stuff, stir fry, roasts, fish. Plenty of veg. Not tiny but just normal dinners.
Followed by a frozen yogurt and sometimes a Galaxy Ripple.
Maybe some fruit in the evening later.
Occasionally 3-4 rice crackers mid afternoon.

Is it just because I’m 46 and am destined to be a size 14 for ever more now? I’m 70kg and 5ft 3 and a half.

That's actually quite a lot of food. Cut out the roll, nkd bar, rice crackers and chocolate!

MintJulia · 13/09/2023 18:18

How many calories is a frozen yoghurt, a Galaxy Ripple and a Naked bar?

You might do better to have breakfast - wholemeal toast or porridge with your tea - and miss out the snacks.

Ozgirl75 · 13/09/2023 18:18

But that would make my day’s food;
an egg salad
dinner

I can’t quite believe that’s enough for a day’s good.

Up the water, up the exercise, reduce the Galaxy ripple. What's your exercise routine?

It's the snacking. Get myfitnesspal

I’ve never eaten brekky, I just am
not hungry at all in the morning.
The frozen yogurt is 83 calories. Naked bar is 130 calories. Ripple is 175.

You're taking in more calories than you're burning, it's that simple. Have you looked at something like MFP to track your calories? Do you drink tea/coffee? Soft drinks? Milk?

Redwinestillfine · 13/09/2023 18:23

It's a lot of sugar. Galaxy, fruit, frozen yoghurt..... Not a lot of protein or carbs but decent vitamins. Try focussing on the nutritional value of what you're eating more so making sure you're eating balanced meals with all the food groups in and save the sweet stuff for once a week.

Redwinestillfine · 13/09/2023 18:23

Naked bars are full of sugar too

Ozgirl75 · 13/09/2023 18:24

Honestly reading this I do feel like I might prefer to stay 6kg heavier than my ideal weight rather than only eat an egg salad and dinner every day 😁

I drink 3-4 teas, no soft drinks, no alcohol.

I haven’t done the calorie counting before, only because I’ve never really needed to.

Exercise is weights 2 times a week and Pilates twice.

Download My Fitness Pal and weigh and track everything you put in your mouth for a week. It’ll be an eye opener!

So I can imagine that it would be - it’s more that I just don’t really see how I can eat much less without feeling permanently starving hungry!

I’ve basically gone back to eating how I was before I put on the weight, expecting it to just come off, and yet it stubbornly stays…..

So I do very much agree….but, it’s the figuring out how many calories I need to lose weight that’s the tricky bit. What if it is just an egg salad and dinner? Are my choices between that tediously small amount, or being mildly fat?

The frozen yogurt is 83 calories. Naked bar is 130 calories. Ripple is 175.

And all of them are composed almost entirely of fat, sugar and carbohydrate. Your body converts carbohydrate to sugar.

You would be far better off eating a handful of nuts, a wholemeal roll and a banana. All of which have calories but which also contain protein, vitamins & minerals, and fibre. They will fill you up better too.

You get hungry because your sugar levels are crashing. Iron out the highs and lows and you won't get the urge to snack.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 13/09/2023 18:32

What you’re eating is fine! Maybe just make sure you do a bit more exercise?

SummerHouse · 13/09/2023 18:33

How long have you been doing this OP? I think your diet looks good. How would you feel about cutting the carbs from your main meal but keeping everything else? You say e.g. roast but does this include carbs?

This.
I'm a similar age to you and what you describe is what I would eat normally , not when I'm trying to lose weight.
Also, it just gets harder as we age.

Yes - a couple of roast potatoes. Can’t have a roast without potatoes!

OP posts:
SantaBarbaraMonica · 13/09/2023 18:34

Your snacks are 400 cals!! That’s huge considering you’re having very substantial lunch and dinner too! A roast could easily have 1000 cals. Do you have dressing on your salad? Any wine ever?

Only a couple of weeks.

Use an online calculator to work out your base metabolic rate, these are the minimum number of calories you need to survive. Use my fitness pal and this will work out how many calories you should be eating a day to lose weight.
Eat fewer calories than you need as well as upping your protein and lowering your carbs and sugar.
