In the past

I have put in a sealed plastic bag and hidden in my large rice box for uncooked rice obviously.

Put it in a winter jacket pocket among many other winter coats in the wardrobe

Put behind a mess under the bathroom basin cabinet where I store my toiletries

put in kids one of the many puzzle/board game boxes on top of the bookshelves

Put in a sealed bag and hidden under washing pods

I hid my money in the stairs. Unscrew the top part of the stair and then tape the money there but only easy if you have a runner on your stairs

JamMakingWannaBe · 12/09/2023 22:21

Do people hide their passports, and if so where?
Mine are out-of-date but I probably do still need to destroy them.

CornedBeef451 · 12/09/2023 22:28

@CurlewKate sorry but no excitement here, the floor safe is open and no key to lock it!

It was exciting when I found it though, thought I'd found a hidden door to a secret basement like someone on here a few years ago!

Although fairly unlikely in a 1970's semi.

Disastersaurus · 12/09/2023 22:38

The most dickhead thread ever. Well done.

Disastersaurus · 12/09/2023 22:42

It's lucky there are no burglars on MN.

Barbiegirl2013 · 12/09/2023 22:50

In a fire proof container!! A family member lost cash in a house fire before, it was the kitty from her sons football team as she was treasurer and lost all the funds. It wasn’t a huge amount but enough!

excelledyourself · 12/09/2023 23:13

Between the bin and the liner of your recycle bin.

Or same, but within a cereal box.

DiscoBeat · 12/09/2023 23:15

Inside some newspaper under the carpet

VWT5 · 12/09/2023 23:19

Be wary of putting in the loft…
My DM put her building society savings book inside the loft hatch - but forgot.
Then moved house 20 years ago
Can’t remember which building society it was
Forgot to notify BS of her change of address…

Howlongwillthistake · 12/09/2023 23:22

In a plastic bag, inside a bag of peas in the freezer

I know it's a lighthearted thread but seriously, You are advertising to totally random strangers where money is stashed in houses

I don't think all of these are actual real-life hiding places, do you?

picsssodreams · 12/09/2023 23:44

Yes unfortunately people do hide their savings behind bath panels/under mattresses etc and have been doing so for years. Just saying that starting a thread about how to creatively hide money is a bit suspicious. If I was a burgling bastard I'd be all over this

XenoBitch · 13/09/2023 00:05

Rolled up and put into a can. My grandad stashed about £3k this way. It was only found after he died.

Or, I would fold up the notes and wrap them in sanitary towel wrappers, and keep in the pack with the real towels. No one will think to look through some jam rags for money.

marshmallowfinder · 13/09/2023 05:42

I think this post is a really bad idea. It's a public forum. You're all giving burglars really great ideas of places to check.🙄

CurlewKate · 13/09/2023 07:13

To be honest, I would think a burglar would probably know all the places suggested. Otherwise they'd have to do some retraining or give their BurglarBadge back....

I used the “taped inside suitcase lining” method for DCs’ extra money on school trips in the days before cash cards. Knowing that the little darlings love to rummage through each others’ school bags when one goes to the toilet.

But (listen up burglars!) we have a safe at home. We worked out it would pay for itself with five years of bank deposit box fees and we wanted something fireproof for important documents.
It’s just a walled-in hotel style, not Gringotts.

JaukiVexnoydi · 13/09/2023 07:18

Also for 99.99% of houses all the places on this thread are going to be empty because the vast number of people DON'T keep large amounts of cash in the house at all. If a burglar starts wasting their time checking inside the comedy teapot we never use but can't throw was because it was a gift from aunty Marjorie (maysherestinpeace) and grandma would never forgive us, then they will get a lot less burgling done, won't achieve any extra money, but will be spending more time in each property and so giving more time for the police to arrive.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/09/2023 07:18

Tampon box.

Anni1234 · 13/09/2023 07:20

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/09/2023 07:18

Tampon box.

That’s what I said 😂
I honestly think it’s a great idea lol

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 13/09/2023 11:22

In the rabbit cage. Well sealed and under the bit they use as a toilet. Stinky and wet!

MojoJojo71 · 13/09/2023 18:33

In an empty Movicol box in the bathroom cabinet 🤣

Lampzade · 13/09/2023 18:34

The loft, but probably not a good idea to give ideas to burglars
