9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

I actually was going to ask op her age. I see she has provided that by inference. This thread makes much more sense with that context.

those of us who watched the second tower in real time and then watched the replays over and over and over again are going to have a very different perspective.

wildwestpioneer · 12/09/2023 12:19

Look on YouTube, TikTok or just google videos, there are 100s.

The planes would have broken up on impact and due to the aviation fuel (highly flammable) that's is stored in the wings of the plane, it exploded with such huge temperatures it melted a lot of the steel in the building contributing towards them collapsing. Any remains, plane or otherwise, would have been incinerated or buried in the rubble of the collapsed tower.

@myyve The Only Plane in The Sky by Garrett M Graff is a good read on the subject.

usernother · 12/09/2023 12:20

Don't worry OP, you only know what you know. It was a fair question.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 12/09/2023 12:21

OP - asks question.

Some Mumsnetters - answer question, provide links or places to follow up.

Other mumsnetters - omg!!! How thick are you??? Really??? Research? On Mumsnet???

@myyve Asking questions is always good, at every stage of your life, for any reason whatsoever. And on this topic or any other tragedy, recent or ancient.

Grow up, do.

Agree 100% with @Berlinlover I don't think they are the one who needs to 'grow up.'

I really didn't mean this to be in poor taste, I truly didn't know what may have happened afterwards. By continue flying I don't mean ongoing as if nothing happened, of course that isn't the case.

I am genuinely sorry if I have upset anybody by this post.

You don’t need to apologise OP. You’re allowed to ask questions without being given permission from the thought police. Crack on

Yes, asking questions about certain things is fine and OK, but THIS? Did the planes carry on flying? REALLY?! Hmm

This.

Ditto this.

I've just googled 9/11 and the first video that appeared shows you very clearly that the planes did not pass through the twin towers after collision.

I'm definitely not against intelligent questions and debate. But this is neither and is in bad taste.

Go online or go to the library- and stop asking an Internet forum. Emotions are very high if you were alive when it happened. It was the most horrific thing I have ever seen.

This brought it all back.

myyve · 12/09/2023 12:22

Thank you to those who have been helpful. And I do sincerely apologise to those that have been upset or offended by my question. I really did try my best to word it as sensitively as possible. I know it's silly of me and I probably do come across insensitive and stupid. As mentioned, I was only 2 at the time of the disaster.

This was my thought process as well regarding “research for a case study”.

Any time I’ve ever had to research anything I’ve gone to a library and poured over scholarly articles and academic pieces of research.

I certainly haven’t popped onto Mumsnet to ask a random group of strangers “what happened”.

HoppingPavlova · 12/09/2023 12:23

@myyve I have researched as much as I possibly can, and have seen some of the footage and articles. There is little information as to if the planes pass through the other side so I did assume not, however I wanted to check

So, you have watched the video footage. And after watching that footage, you are still asking the question? Righto.

Also, you will need to raise your hand for assistance with your research skills with whoever is overseeing you at your institution. Having personally viewed the footage and still not being able to work it out, you claim there is little information online and no answer to this (extremely obvious) question. That’s definitely not the case as I have done a quick search between my last post and this one and there is a LOT. Even if I didn’t know of this at all, my quick Google has brought up many hits from reputable sources and giving the exact answer in seconds, not even minutes. So, something is wrong and if this is genuine and you are researching you need to get help with your skills.

YapYap2023 · 12/09/2023 12:23

I watched it as it happened and I didn't know until this thread that there was a 4th plane, so you do learn something new every day.

No one should be belittled for asking a question, any question.

I'm not being funny but OP is of the generation where they automatically know where to find practically ANY information, and it's all at her fingertips. And this was one of the biggest, most shocking events of the century. Literally hundreds of documentaries have been made about it. Millions of clips of it happening on all social media.

Fgs, she could even ask Chat GPT.

But she comes to Mumsnet for her 'research'? I call bullshit.

MeadAndPie · 12/09/2023 12:25

They hit at force - they later found insulation foam around some of the steel had been blown off with impact - saw a documentary investing why towers collapsed - then they were full of aviation fuel which ignited on impact - and the steel girders were exposed to high temperatures to their ability to hold the weight of floors above diminished.

What wasn't destroyed with impact or blown up with fuel exploding and burning then crashed with buildings.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/09/2023 12:25

@myyve I think some other posters have been unacceptably aggressive to you, I'm sorry.

I saw the news footage as it happened, are you aware that after the first plane hit news cameras filming at the scene and tv were reporting worldwide that an 'explosion' had happened. While this was happening the second plane flew in and hit the second tower. That colission was broadcast and you will be able to watch archive footage online to see exactly what happened.

There is a very good documentary, with footage of the towers, and also people on the ground trying to escape from the debris when they collapsed. It's absolutely harrowing. I don't know the name of it but it was released in 2002 8 think.

I don't think anyone's nervous or offended, it's just a stupid question when you can literally watch the moment of both impacts online. There's documentaries, films and news articles galore.

To pretend you aren't sure if the aircraft plopped out the other side of the building is disingenuous.

myyve · 12/09/2023 12:26

I didn't come to mumsnet for my research entirely. I literally just needed to clear up that one question in which I couldn't find information for online.

At risk of sounding even more stupid, I wasn't sure if it had managed to pass through the building, hidden by the plumes of smoke and fire before then coming to an almost immediate crash landing. I wasn't sure, so I asked the question.

I hadn't realised that it exploded entirely in impact.

Sorry to ask a further question - I cant say I ever researched the topic since I was only 7 when it happened and it was my first experience of any death at all, let alone a world altering tragedy.

I didn't know there was a 4th plane, did they ever find out where it was heading for?

REP22 · 12/09/2023 12:27

The planes were instantly destroyed, along with the people inside them. Most of the people working on the floors hit by the planes were vaporised. I hope it was so quick for them that they had no time to think or feel anything. There are accounts of phone conversations with people who were on the floors affected at the time of the crash but I am not going into those details here. Lots of people were trapped on the floors above the impacts and had a slower end. Fragments of the planes and their occupants were found afterwards, but not much that would be recognisable. The burning jet fuel weakened the buildings' structures which led to their ultimate collapse.

I remember the day as though it was yesterday. I know two people that worked in the North Tower (they survived).

It was heading for Washington, most likely the White House or the Capitol Building.

Allthestories · 12/09/2023 12:28

Why is asking on mumsnet in poorer taste than poring over and over the videos on YouTube? It's pretty ghoulish to watch all the films about too.
@myyve probably want to get it straight in her head. I am old enough to have seen it on the news in real time but it's honestly just so incomprehensibly awful that i found it hard to get my round it too.

Don't let the bastards grind you down OP.

FarmGirl78 · 12/09/2023 12:29

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:56

I was 2 when it happened, so no I didn't see the footage. I am actually asking as research for part of a case study I am working on. Not just for the hell of it, or because I want to know the morbid details. I am sorry again for asking. I just couldn't find any further information on this online.

If you're research this for work as a case study and you've come to Mumsnet for advice BEFORE you've watched the footage then (and I'm not being nasty or obtuse here) you really need to go back to whoever set you this project and explain to need support in learning HOW to research something. How can you NOT find footage online?

Edited to add: This MUST be a wind up.
