9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

I had a friend in New York ask the same question at the the time, and I know what OP means. I remember how the planes sliced in at such speed, like a knife, you might have expected a part to appear on the other side. I don't understand the sanctimonious aggression to the OP on this thread.

Exactly. It's a perfectly reasonable question.

Not everyone watched it at the time, not everyone has watched endless news and documentaries about it since.

I also didn't know or have forgotten in the intervening 20+ years that there was a fourth plane that ended up in a field.

JANEY205 · 12/09/2023 12:40

This is a question I could see a child asking, but an adult really? It’s like saying ‘if you crash into a wall at 900 mph what happens’…wtf do you think happens? It was a truly horrible day for anyone impacted, including those who watched it happen as it changed the world for good. Maybe go and research that OP and how the world did change in SO many ways post 9/11. The awful wars that occurred after and all the lives lost then. The way airline travel changed. The racism and cultural prejudices so many had to live through. The fear of more terror attacks. The impact on the families. There really is so much you could research but your question is probably so so obvious not many would think to google it. It was obvious wha happened to the planes.

What the fuck are you asking?!

She's asking the question that's in her fucking OP.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 12/09/2023 12:40

What is the purpose of the research? You aren't two now and you can't not have seen photos and videos of the huge fireball explosions as the planes hit the towers, what did you think it was that was burning?

SundayCherry · 12/09/2023 12:42

Please get this thread deleted OP. @myyve It’s made my tummy churn and it’s like you wanted people to speculate on the deaths.

What horrible replies. There's absolutely no need. I have a very, very unscientific brain and am constantly asking my physics genius son ridiculous questions, which he patiently, but often in hysterical laughter, answers me.

One was 'why is the sun so hot?' I don't know, I don't understand, and I just wanted to know. Its a standing joke in my family, but they are kind enough to answer (if wary about what daft thing mum's going to ask next).

Does being so unpleasant make people feel superior?

Why don’t you just use google and educate yourself? Why are you so helpless? It’s really odd.

twilightermummy · 12/09/2023 12:43

I've only read a few comments but just came on to say that it's made me feel a bit sick. I'd talk about a lot of things freely too but just the thought of it turns my stomach.

Agreed. It’s made me feel really sick. It’s like they wanted a discussion about the gore of the deaths and it’s deeply unpleasant. It’s BS they came here to research and not speculate and it’s sick.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 12/09/2023 12:44

For those of you who didn't know there was a 4th plane watch the film United 93

JuvenileEmu · 12/09/2023 12:44

Ok, I don't want to be really harsh but- if you were two then, you're 24 now. So you're a 24 year old, seemingly doing some kind of academic research- how can you possibly think asking questions on an internet forum is research?

myyve · 12/09/2023 12:44

I have absolutely not made this post for any reason other than to fill the gap in my knowledge of the events that day. I would never want to speculate or hone in on the deaths of those poor people. I really am not what many of you seem to think I am.

I asked this question for genuine reasons.

I don't know why everyone is having a go at the OP. The answer isn't self-evident for all the planes at all, at least one did land! A few people also survived the collapse of the Twin Towers even though the vast majority died.

So, all those mocking her are quite incorrect.

As for the motivation of this thread, unsure, but I'm unsure everyone is replying from a good-hearted place either, it's a nice excuse for a kicking more like.

Throwncrumbs · 12/09/2023 12:45

I assume you were not even born when this occurred. Nothing more to say!

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 12/09/2023 12:47

If you can find it OP, I recommend watching a documentary called 102 Minutes That Changed America.
It's a collection of footage from that day - some from the media, others from the public. It's a hard watch. It used to be on Channel 4 on demand (or whatever its called now)

Ignore the nasty replies OP, bunch of sanctimonious twats. Clearly inadequate people trying to bolster themselves up somehow if they have to sit behind a screen and berate someone for something that they haven't done or intended to do.

A plane crashed into a building. What do you think happened. 🙄 If you're doing research I suggest you read news articles instead of posting on MN.

Use AI if you don't have your own.

Turquioseblue · 12/09/2023 12:48

I was a child when President Kennedy was assassinated and in junior high school when the moon landing occurred. I was 40 years old when 9/11 happened.
I remember where I was for each event vividly!
Amazing to have lived through these events - such incredible times.

Wha do you mean by landed? Crashed at high speed into a field?

Most of those in the Twin Towers escaped, not a few, 1000s of them who were on floors below the impact

if you start from page 20 of this document there are diagrams that make it clear.

previous words such as disintegrated, vaporized destroyed are all basically valid.

I was 2 when it happened, so no I didn't see the footage. I am actually asking as research for part of a case study I am working on. Not just for the hell of it, or because I want to know the morbid details. I am sorry again for asking. I just couldn't find any further information on this online.

The footage is easy to find if you do a quick Google search. I’d suggest that would have been a better way to start your research.

They exploded into a fireball. The plane became burning shrapnal and the passengers where instantly cremated (as where people in the impact zone, even a women on the street below was infamously burned to death by the fuel spill).

You can SEE it happen in the video.

Do you think a high speed plane hitting a steel immovable object just came out unscathed and carried on?

If you drove a car into a steel beam at 550mph what do you think would happen? given that a 60mph crash into a tree would usually be fatal. That a car too without explosive pressure and jet fuel like a plane.

willWillSmithsmith · 12/09/2023 12:49

Go on YouTube where there are many videos covering just about every aspect of this terrible act. The before, the during, the after, the interviews, the mental impacts, the death tolls everything you could want to research. MN really isn’t the place for an in depth case study.
