9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

If we go down a path (in general not just Mumsnet) that those asking questions are mocked, then………that’s a bit shit really.

If you don’t know, ask. OP said she tried looking online but couldn’t find the answer.

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:59

Correct, I have decently been given a case study in which I am researching further into these kinds of mass disasters. This one happened when I was very young, so of course I don't remember it. I apologise if this has come across inappropriate.

The two planes that hit the twin towers became part of that debris afair. They didn't "come out the other side". This place in now a memorial to all.who lost their lives, including resuce workers.

Im.not sure about the other plane - it crashed I think, brought down by passengers in a non city location to save lives?

And the 4th plane landed, the terrorist takeover failed?

Four planes crashed. Two into the twin towers, one into the Pentagon in Washington DC, and a fourth into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers. All on board all planes were killed.

Theunamedcat · 12/09/2023 12:00

Look at the footage not just the "stills" it makes it clearer but your brain has difficulty comprehending the sheer size of it passenger planes are MASSIVE the twin towers were huge it doesn't look "real" you can't comprehend where the plane "went"

HoppingPavlova · 12/09/2023 12:01

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying

Surely, if it’s not obvious to you what would happen when a plane slams full speed into a massive wall of concrete and metal, then a 2 second Google will give you video footage of exactly what happened to them when they hit.

wayyour · 12/09/2023 12:01

The poor souls on board died after/on impact. Many of the remains still unidentified or unable to be, as completely incinerated. The remaining bits of plane became part of the rest of the debris from the buildings and crash, no chance of continuing to fly.

Door goodness sake the poster was 2 when it happened! We have had 22 years of knowing about what happened. And yes they can look online but they are only asking a question. I don't see it as being ignorant. No need for the post to be reported.

cornflower21 · 12/09/2023 12:02

There's ton of articles on the internet...

Gingerlygreen · 12/09/2023 12:03

I'm not sure how you haven't seen footage if you've been researching online.

There are thousands of videos that show the planes hitting the towers which explode as the fuel catches fire.
Same as if they had got the ground, they explode instantly and the debris is scattered.

DuckBushCityLimit · 12/09/2023 12:03

No, the two others both also crashed, one into the Pentagon and one into a rural area.

Edit - that was meant to be a reply to the post above, but others answered it first anyway.

Iheartpizza · 12/09/2023 12:03

The planes and everyone in them were vaporised on impact.

wayyour · 12/09/2023 12:04

I was 2 when it happened, so no I didn't see the footage. I am actually asking as research for part of a case study I am working

What case study? Not about 9/11 I hope, as you don't appear to know anything at all if you don't mind my saying.

Comedycook · 12/09/2023 12:04

You must have seen the footage op? It's pretty obvious when you watch it what happened to the planes.

I hope that at least it was quick for the poor people on board.

I was 2 when it happened, so no I didn't see the footage. I am actually asking as research for part of a case study I am working on. Not just for the hell of it, or because I want to know the morbid details. I am sorry again for asking. I just couldn't find any further information on this online.

If you’re genuinely using this as a case study for something academic, then why on god’s green earth are you asking Mumsnet what happened? There is tons of actual evidence available, including footage, and reports from the investigations. Surely those would be the only sources worth using.

Do you usually use random people on social media to do your research?

Asking on Mumsnet is NOT research. If you've been tasked with researching something then go and do it. Archive footage, survivors stories, documentaries all exist as do formal government enquiries.
Carried on flying.... good grief.

ArseMenagerie · 12/09/2023 12:04

The planes were used as weapons, once they hit the twin towers/pentagon they exploded like a bomb. Planes are massive and full of jet fuel.

FloweryName · 12/09/2023 12:04

You need to watch the footage. It will be easily available.

If you're doing 'research for a case study', then you need to improve your research skills. If you google videos of that day, there's plenty to be found. And TV programmes that you can watch and take notes from.

littlemousebigcheese · 12/09/2023 12:05

God, just ignore everyone who seems to know everything without ever having to ask a question. How do we learn if we don't question things? It's a decent question I think, I hadn't really thought about the planes to be honest as so much focus was on the buildings. I remember people asking about the titanic sub that imploded and suddenly everyone was a structural engineer and was scathing at anyone who dared ask anything. It's a nasty habit to discourage learning and act like people are stupid for not knowing things you know

Royanne · 12/09/2023 12:05

And your research method is to ask on MN rather than watch one of the thousands of videos on youtube?

How have you reached your 20s without ever seeing any footage?

HoppingPavlova · 12/09/2023 12:06

@GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife If you don’t know, ask. OP said she tried looking online but couldn’t find the answer

That’s just not correct though. That means the OP could not find any footage at all. As I said a quick 2 second Google brings up videos and OP gets to see the answer with her own eyes in less time than it takes to type out the question on Mumsnet. I just don’t believe anyone could watch these and then ask ‘but what happened to the planes’.

ScottishIceCream · 12/09/2023 12:06

I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder if a fast moving object that crashes into a building might come out the other side, and continue movement in some way.

This happened nearly quarter of a century ago, not last week, ask away OP.

myyve · 12/09/2023 12:08

Thanks all. I was literally just hoping to have a clearer idea from people that remember the events. I am sorry again for asking the question. Yes, I have seen some of the footage available online, as heartbreaking as it is.. and I saw the explosions of fire but I was unsure as to if this happened directly on impact or if the planes 'made it out of the other side of the building' (for lack of a better way of asking) before then exploding.

Anyway. I will leave it there and apologise again for the question.
