9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

If you were my 21 year old, I'd be telling you to get this thread deleted.
But you wouldn't have started it in the first place.
I lost a pal that day. I have to steel myself to watch documentaries about it, they are real and graphic and absolutely both show and talk about what actually happened. I'm astonished that you, at 21, think Mumsnet is the right forum.

Who do you think you are to tell anybody to get a thread deleted? Steel yourself to look at a thread title and move away if the content isn't to your liking. OP doesn't need to apologise to you or anybody else.

I'm sick of reading posters like you thinking that you can police other people, just stop it.

Apologies, i thought you said you we were 2 at the time.

OP would have been born around 1999 to have been 2 years old in 2001, so around 24 years of age now.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions - everyday should be a school day, but if OP had googled "what happened to the 911 planes" she would have all the info she requires for her research. It took me less than 30 seconds.

I googled to verify and certainly didn't see the answer in 30 seconds.

The 'what happened' that comes up is that two of the planes were crashed into/flown into the World trade centres.
The OP knew that, she just didn't know what happened to the planes once they had been crashed into the buildings and wanted clarification.

cobden28 · 12/09/2023 16:13

I'm honestly surprised that any bit of rubble from this horrific incident can be positively identified as belonging to any specific plane. I thought anything left was in such tiny pieces or was so horribly burnt it was impossible to identify.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/09/2023 16:13

There will be many of us ‘curious’ as to the realities of that day because it was so horrific and even now it’s unbelievably hard to watch. I’m still amazed there is no footage of the plane hitting the Pentagon.
And no, I’m not a conspiracy theorist.

There is. It's security camera footage, which isn't continuous coverage, but it exists.

ChristopherTalken · 12/09/2023 16:18

This is literally one of the most reported historical events ever. How can you say you couldn't find anything online?

That plane did not land safely. It crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as the passengers were trying to wrest control of the plane back from the hijackers. All aboard died. No-one on the ground lost their lives. It was United Airlines Flight 93 and a film, "United 93", was made by Paul Greengrass about it.

The cars were not 'left untouched for years' some were driven out of the parking garage. What we saw of the twin towers was above ground but there was a lot below ground too, shops (an entire mall) and at least one subway station.

Not all of it was destroyed when the towers collapsed.

I watched the two towers fall live on TV.

I don't think I knew about building 7 for a while though.

Actually, there is footage of the plane hitting the Pentagon.

I’m sorry about your friend but there is nothing about MN in particular that makes it an inappropriate place to discuss this.

Wow I’m actually blown away, women can qualify as engineers AND have children?
You learn something new every day, never ever did I think that was possible.

Structural engineer asking questions running simulations is how we know what actually happened - the Pentagon held up better than the twin towers due to differences in construction- I hadn't been told that before in fact hadn't thought much about differences and would have assumed height or impact speed rather than construction.

What Structural Engineers Learned from 9/11

Members of the profession study such tragic events to try and ensure that something similar won’t happen again

OP doesn’t need to delete the thread, they’ve done nothing wrong. Mumsnet is a perfectly normal place to ask a bloody question. That’s the whole point of Mumsnet.

FindPirate · 12/09/2023 16:24

@PenLidsOnTheFloor we are talking academia here. Asking ridiculously stupid questions is not the way to get on!

No question is a stupid question.

The only one being ignorant here, is you. I encourage everyone to ask all questions and never be ashamed. They might be mocked like some of the people on here, but you should never be ashamed of asking a question. It’s so important to do so. In every aspect of life.

FindPirate · 12/09/2023 16:26

Practical thinking is absolutely something you can learn.

Asking questions so insane that people think you are a village idiot is really not the way to progress in academia. There’s questions and questions. Those saying “ask stupid questions” are kidding themselves.

Christ, what a spiteful, condescending post. Some people need to take a hard look at themselves, most of them are on this thread. Cannot believe some of the nasty responses on here

myyve · 12/09/2023 16:27

I have asked a question. Why I am getting gunned down for it I just don't understand. I've tried to be sensitive about it, I've apologised several times to those I may have offended.

There is no such thing as a stupid question.

That phrasing is repeated often in academia. Because it’s so important to ask and understand instead of not understanding and getting it wrong. Asking questions, even seemingly stupid ones, is how we learn. Also, what you deem as a stupid question is not a stupid question to others. You sound very judgemental.

SOBplus · 12/09/2023 16:30

OP, Stop apologizing, some people just want to find offense/be offended so they can be offensive.

myyve · 12/09/2023 16:30

Shame I had to see that comment before MNHQ deleted it. wish I hadn't.

It's kind of confirmed to me I'm in the wrong field here. It's all been a rough learning curve.

Who made you judge and jury of what counts as a stupid question?

If you don't know something, or don't understand it, it's wise to ask.

Your ignorance seems intentional.

Honestly OP , try not to take it to heart. There are some very spiteful individuals on this thread.

God if you can't ask a question on an anonymous forum where on earth can you?

Try and ignore the sneerers, it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask.
