Where in GB would you live?

For various reasons, I’m going to soon be able to move away from where I live (which I never settled in).
I can move anywhere within GB and I’d like somewhere

  • Not isolated
  • With a vibrant life (thinking museums, talks, cafes, yoga etc…rather than going out)
  • Good links to various towns (two dcs who live in two different town in the North of England)
  • Not crazily expensive to buy (yes I know I’m asking for the golden goose)
Where would you go?

I'd probably go for Sheffield if you want somewhere biggish and Todmorden/ Calder Valley if you want somewhere smaller.

LifeInTheUK · 11/09/2023 18:24

Oh I had never heard of Todmorden. I’ll have a look.

Cotswolds

Cotswolds

Is there a particular place you’d think about?

Leeds ticks your boxes.

Meadowdog · 11/09/2023 18:54

Chester for sure.

ManuelBensonsLeftBoot · 11/09/2023 18:56

Newcastle

Araminta34 · 11/09/2023 19:00

Another vote for Leeds if you choose the right area. Good transport, a wide range of property prices, excellent shops and market, night life if you want it, theatre.
Alternatively, York also has lots going for it. Property prices tend to be higher than parts of Leeds.

cheezncrackers · 11/09/2023 19:02

Any decent-sized city would give you those things OP, so rule out the ones that are too expensive and see what you fancy. Do you have a preference for north or south, east or west?

Haggistrap · 11/09/2023 19:05

Glasgow?

Sheffield is going to shit - I currently wouldn't recommend it to anyone

Tequilamockinbird · 11/09/2023 19:09

North Tyneside - Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay. All lovely places to live on the coast, and easy access into Newcastle by bus or metro.

LifeInTheUK · 11/09/2023 19:12

I think one of the issues I have is that I have found small town life very hard to cope with.
From talking to friends, I know towns such as Leeds or York are really nice and open but they are also expensive… It seems that as soon as you move out from the centre, you fall back into that and it’s much harder to make friends, and create a network/community around you.

Newcastle is a No-No for me.

Thats one of the reasons why I want to keep my options open. I’m in the NE so have a pretty good idea for those places but I’m thinking that attitudes will be different on other parts of the country.
Scotland is pretty attractive to me. Edinburgh in particular. Not sure about the weather (is it much more humid/rainy than the NE?).

Would love to hear your reasons why Newscastle is a No No as I always have a romantic view of it . I've only been once briefly!

No, the east of the country, including Scotland, is dry. The weather there would be very similar the weather in the NE of England.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/09/2023 19:22

Chester, as a PP said. Gorgeous place to live

I’m interested to know why you say this

Third vote for Chester!

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 11/09/2023 19:39

If you find Leeds and York too expensive then you'll find the same with Edinburgh.

JustKen · 11/09/2023 19:42

I would say York cept the cost of housing there.

A lot of lovely suburb areas around Leeds,
think Horsforth, Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Cookridge Alwoodley, and all with good access to Leeds city centre

I would too!

My feeling of Sheffield is that the centre us run down and depressing but there are many areas around it that are quite nice and vibrant.
I don’t know about the day to day living there though
