Where in GB would you live?

For various reasons, I’m going to soon be able to move away from where I live (which I never settled in).
I can move anywhere within GB and I’d like somewhere

  • Not isolated
  • With a vibrant life (thinking museums, talks, cafes, yoga etc…rather than going out)
  • Good links to various towns (two dcs who live in two different town in the North of England)
  • Not crazily expensive to buy (yes I know I’m asking for the golden goose)
Where would you go?

Yorkshire Dales, nice a rural.

I'm fed up with Cornwall and wouldn't miss the sea or beaches one bit.

If you’re looking at property in Scotland then bear in mind that the selling system is different to England. Properties are typically on at “offers over” price and sell based on a sealed bids system on a closing date. The offers over price is usually a bit less or around the valuation price. You will only get a mortgage up to the valuation price (or % based on it) but properties often sell for more. What’s your budget?

Ahh but if you move from Cornwall to the Yorkshire Dales you will suffer badly from hireth.

The new quote button isn't working for me, and now I can't copy and paste either! Anyway, no one will have mentioned Cambridge because you said not crazily expensive, OP. Cambridge is seriously crazily expensive - I think it's comparable to London.

LifeInTheUK · 12/09/2023 20:01

Fair enough @Time40
I didn’t realise Cambridge was as expensive as that!

How about Norwich?
We enjoy visiting and I'd consider living there, but DH is a country boy. Lots of museums, university city, community spirit.
House prices aren't too bad for the south.

Liverpool, hands down.

It depends on what your budget is and what you want to get for that - for example is a 2 bed nice city centre flat in a good area with small communal garden acceptable? Or are you hoping for a small detached etc. Agree with others you will find progressive good towns outside of Leeds that are vibrant, active, many local groups. Same with outskirts of York, Harrogate etc. Knaesborough is quite lovely too.

The other cities that spring to mind include Glasgow and Edinburgh. The latter is a bit more money and one lovely lot of friends left E for Glasgow and found it much easier to make friends in Glasgow.

I'm worried cost mean many southern cities won't be a fit but Chichester, Lyme Regis and Bristol come to mind.

It sounds like staying in the north is beneficial for pricing and ease of travel. So many lovely places in the UK. Exciting time for you!

In London, greater London, better VFM and easily see many sites/stuff where people from all over the world come to see.

You can't beat London
