Where in GB would you live?

For various reasons, I’m going to soon be able to move away from where I live (which I never settled in).
I can move anywhere within GB and I’d like somewhere

  • Not isolated
  • With a vibrant life (thinking museums, talks, cafes, yoga etc…rather than going out)
  • Good links to various towns (two dcs who live in two different town in the North of England)
  • Not crazily expensive to buy (yes I know I’m asking for the golden goose)
Where would you go?

Glasgow or Birmingham

Insommmmnia · 11/09/2023 23:54

If it didn't need to be the UK then absolutely Ljubljana that's totally where I would move to.

But in a similar (but not quite the same constraints) situation I am currently weighing up Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Brighton.

North berwick is lovely but also fife coast has loads going on (Dunfermline/ leven/ aberdour) etc but with excellent transport links to Edinburgh and rest of the country

Oh I had never heard of Todmorden. I’ll have a look.

Please don't. I lived there for a long time. Its sooo dull.

Liverpool

Liverpool is wonderful. Central too. Easy to get to motorways and airports. The friendliest people and beautiful architecture

coxesorangepippin · 12/09/2023 00:47

Oh god no, not todmorden

Please no

I'd say Scotland

Vetoncall · 12/09/2023 00:51

I was going to suggest Edinburgh before I read your post mentioning it. I went to university there and stayed on for quite a few years afterwards, absolutely loved it. It's expensive but it's an amazing place to live imo.

Lighthouseview · 12/09/2023 00:59

I live in Edinburgh and have lived in a number of different cities in Uk (not London) I honestly think the quality of life here is brilliant. I am in my fifties now but it has something for all stages of life. Some areas are pricy but there are still cheaper areas. Also as previous poster mentioned could live just outside near train station and be in centre in less than half an hour. Plenty of friends live in Dunfermline and do just that.

I know Newcastle and Tynemouth well. Edinburgh is dry, being on east coast but imo isn’t quite so exposed to the winds coming off the North Sea as Newcastle, being further in along the Forth. My friends in Newcastle always comment that there is a much wider range of restaurants and creative/cultural events in Edinburgh - although still love Newcastle!

Spacehopperno1 · 12/09/2023 01:03

I absolutely love Edinburgh. This week have been to the Grayson Perry exhibition, walked the dog in woods, stood on top of a hill with views for many many miles, poked around the big posh shopping centre and had pizza on the beach at sunset. All without leaving the city.

catnipevergreen · 12/09/2023 01:05

Have you thought about Durham ? Still North East , relatively cheap.

squidgem · 12/09/2023 01:10

As PP have suggested, Chester is lovely!

If you are considering Leeds area, look up Saltaire/ Shipley/ Baildon. House prices aren't too expensive, and has what you are looking for.

Meadowdog · 12/09/2023 06:42

Maybe there used to be nothing to do in Chester until Storyhouse came along. And if that ever goes I think Chester will be much poorer for it. But there's also access to the Wirral and North Wales for countryside walks, beaches, and culture (the Lady Lever art gallery and Gladstones library for example).

Rubyupbeat · 12/09/2023 06:43

Cumbria, troutbeck, in the south lakes.

BlastedPimples · 12/09/2023 06:44

Edinburgh.

LadyatLady82 · 12/09/2023 06:45

You wouldn’t go as far as Newcastle but you’d go to Scotland? Also why across the Pennines if you’re in the NE already.

As PPs have said Leeds, you could try around Huddersfield/Halifax or places like Saltaire, Bingley, Skipton on the outskirts of Bradford.

BMrs · 12/09/2023 07:02

Lincoln is a great place

pompomdaisy · 12/09/2023 07:08

Leeds. Meanwood isn't crazy expensive. Want more rural Otley?

anunlikelyseahorse · 12/09/2023 07:08

Lincoln is a great place

Seconded. Brilliant city, massively overlooked.

TotalOverhaul · 12/09/2023 07:15

Newcastle on Tyne. It may be famous for its lairy nightlife but actually it has amazing museums, galleries, talks, indie film, incredible theatre scene, great music scene, stunning countryside and seaside on the doorstep and affordable housing.

Leeds ticks your boxes.

I live in north Leeds and it ticks all those boxes.

MardyMcBlowdry · 12/09/2023 07:43

Dundee. Driest city in the UK, has had loads of regeneration in the last 10 years, on the main east coast rail line (Aberdeen one hour north and Edinburgh 1 hour south), and has two universities. It's also got the new V&A, which is magnificent and is surrounded by lots of beautiful countryside.

ThreeRingCircus · 12/09/2023 07:50

I've lived in Chester, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford and York. If you can afford it, I don't think York can be beaten. Beautiful city, big enough to have lots going on but not too massive, access to wonderful countryside etc. It's by far my favourite place out of the many that I've lived.

I've visited Edinburgh and that also seems lovely.

DaisyWaldron · 12/09/2023 07:54

I live in York and love it, but it's no longer really an affordable place to live.

Time40 · 12/09/2023 08:03

Liverpool is wonderful. Central too. Easy to get to motorways and airports. The friendliest people and beautiful architecture

That's all true. Liverpool is the friendliest place I have ever been in the UK.

Chester has had a few votes ... it's nice in the daytime, but my god, the weekend nights are awful - absolutely packed out with people, lots of them rolling drunk, police vans out ... going for a walk around Chester after dark is certainly an experience.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/09/2023 08:04

Leeds. My friend who wanted similar things moved back to Leeds and loves it.
