Heating plates before serving up

Does anybody here do this? I very rarely do. Have recently spent some time staying with my 90=year-old mum, who always, always, always heats the plates for the main course, and generally also heats bowls for soup. I think this is odd. She thinks it's the rest of the world that's odd. Grin

*When I say 'heats', she puts them in the oven for a few minutes with whatever's cooking, and on removal you would risk getting burnt if you touched the plates without an oven glove.

Yep, we do. We have a warming drawer fitted under the oven.

spoonfuladay · 17/09/2023 17:20

My parents do this, I don't get it

Sammysquiz · 17/09/2023 17:56

My mum even asks in restaurants for hers to come on a hot plate. I always cringe!

I went to Gordons restaurant in london. Was good. Food was crap.

Yes, we do it. We fill the washing-up bowl with scalding hot water and put them in there. The water doesn't go to waste, as it is still hot enough to do the washing-up afterwards.

I don't much like hot food on a stone cold plate, but when we had small dc I would put the food on a cold plate for them.

It's not extra energy - I just pop the plates in the bottom of the oven 5 minutes before the food is due to come out.

Is it extra energy if you have a tiny oven like I do, where the food takes up the room. It’s also general extra effort that isn’t worth it IMO. Never needed it.

@Hbh17 😂 their reply was a tad dramatic wasn't it? 😂

There is no need to be such a dick

fuckssaaaaake · 17/09/2023 18:17

@MariaVT65 Wowzers; that escalated. Slightly aggressive 😂😂😂

I am a big fan of not doing things that are a waste of time. If you want to call me dramatic because of that, at least have the balls to quote me directly. And I’m totally fine if you think i’m agressive. You’re still a dick lol. No need for it at all.

fuckssaaaaake · 17/09/2023 18:24

@MariaVT65 hope you feel better now you've got all that anger out. Have a lovely evening

Scruffington · 17/09/2023 18:26

who knew that such a prosaic thing as warm dinner plates would stir up such emotion.

I hate eating off a hot plate! I burn my hands/mouth easily so I want my food to cool down asap.

My father on the other hands puts on this whole horrified/dismayed act like I’ve ruined his weekend if his plate is not super hot.

301963Laurie · 17/09/2023 18:33

I don’t but my husband is obsessed with having a hot plate!! One of his many‘quirks’😳

Destiny123 · 17/09/2023 18:35

Never do. Always get a ton of grief from mum for it lol

Me too. If I go out for coffee with my mum I have to remember to order hot milk for her when I'm ordering cold milk for myself. And still she's finished jers while I'm still waiting for mine to get to a drinkable temperature.

And the converse is true with things most people like extra cold. I never have ice in drinks and I don't keep fizzy drinks in the fridge. I want all "cold" drink at room temperature.

MsFrost · 17/09/2023 18:53

I don't heat plates unless it's a special meal.

I do heat my mug for my morning coffee though, just using water from the kettle for a minute before pouring the coffee.

Tepid drinks! Shock That would not do for me at all. I like a cold drink to be cold, not room temperature.

Yeah, I know I'm weird! Anything too hot or too cold I feel like all I can taste is the temperature. I know you can't actually taste temperature but it distracts from my enjoyment of the food or drink.

Favouritefruits · 17/09/2023 19:06

This is a real issue in my house, you do not put hot food in cold plates, the plates are zapped in the Microwave for 30 seconds!

therealcookiemonster · 12/01/2024 13:22

I always microwave plates and bowls before serving. that way the food doesn't get cold

Goneforaride · 12/01/2024 13:28

I always serve hot food on a warmed up plate: it goes cold quickly if you don't. So they sit in the oven for a few minutes before serving. Doesn't take long, use any more energy etc.
