Heating plates before serving up

Does anybody here do this? I very rarely do. Have recently spent some time staying with my 90=year-old mum, who always, always, always heats the plates for the main course, and generally also heats bowls for soup. I think this is odd. She thinks it's the rest of the world that's odd. Grin

*When I say 'heats', she puts them in the oven for a few minutes with whatever's cooking, and on removal you would risk getting burnt if you touched the plates without an oven glove.

I do it some of the time, if the oven has been on. If I’ve cooked just using a wok/pan then I wouldn’t heat the oven just to warm the plates.

Friolero · 10/09/2023 19:09

I usually do in the winter because they're really cold when you get them out of the cupboard and would cool the food down too quickly. I wouldn't bother at this time of year.

Oakbeam · 10/09/2023 19:10

We do it. I thought it was the norm. If the oven hasn’t been on, a quick blast under grill works well enough. I cook with a wok probably 50% of the time.

TeenDivided · 10/09/2023 19:12

My Mum always does it. I only heat them at Christmas.

Pollywoddles · 10/09/2023 19:14

I do. Stick them in the oven if it’s been on or a quick blast in the microwave. It keeps your food from going cold quickly.

Ragwort · 10/09/2023 19:14

Yes I always do, food goes cold so quickly if you don't. But I am trained in culinary skills so probably a bit pedantic about things like that Grin.

TwistofFate · 10/09/2023 19:14

My mum always does this, I think it's a way of keeping the food hot for longer. I never bother.

Afonavon · 10/09/2023 19:16

My Mum has started to do this as soon as we all flew the nest. I don’t do it, can’t be bothered. Don’t see the point as we all hoover up our food before it cools.

GetWhatYouWant · 10/09/2023 19:17

I live on my own and don't when it's just me, but always do when anyone else eats with me. Use the oven if that's been on, otherwise use the folded fabric electric plate warmer I got a few years ago, great invention!

SeulementUneFois · 10/09/2023 19:17

I do if I remember/ have time. But I never even knew about the concept before meeting DP, he does it and I copied it.
I put them in the smaller second oven (maybe there's a specific name for it?), and only turn it on to 50 degrees Celsius.

usernother · 10/09/2023 19:18

Never do it and never will. Can't be bothered.

GetWhatYouWant · 10/09/2023 19:18

I also heat serving dishes, gravy boat etc.

DominoRules · 10/09/2023 19:18

I don’t very often but my dad is obsessed by hot plates. He’s been known to put the plates in the side oven before even any prep has started to make sure they’re suitably boiling 😂

TakeMe2Insanity · 10/09/2023 19:18

I can see the point pre 80s(?) when not everyone had central heating so plates would have been cold in winter. Not now. Although with COL maybe it’ll be a thing again?

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2023 19:19

Anyone who doesn’t is just a sloven!!!

amicissimma · 10/09/2023 19:21

Yes please.

toadasoda · 10/09/2023 19:25

I usually heat them especially something like pasta that chills very quickly otherwise. If the oven isn't on I pour some boiling water from the kettle in for a minute or two

GrazingSheep · 10/09/2023 19:26

Always heat them . We have a warming drawer which does the job in 5 minutes

FuckingHellAdele · 10/09/2023 19:27

I do for Sunday roasts, especially if it's something like lamb or beef where it can cool down quickly and be fatty.

CardamomGarden · 10/09/2023 19:27

My dad moans about this whenever he visits. I would never think to do it, but then I know some people don’t care for how good is served lukewarm in many other countries and I’m perfectly happy with that. Yes, pasta doesn’t stay warm on a non-heated plate but as long as it’s not chilled that’s not a problem. As an impatient diner, I’m more bothered by too-hot food burning the skin off the roof of my mouth.

I’m guessing there has been a cultural shift as I can’t remember the last time I was handed a plate in a restaurant and warned how hot it was, whereas this always used to happen. See also food warmers with little tea lights in Indian and Chinese restaurants.

Ginisatonic · 10/09/2023 19:30

I always heat them.

I used to just heat them for DH and I, so when I started heating them for the DC they knew they’d grown up 😆

Spendonsend · 10/09/2023 19:30

Tend to in winter as the plates are very cold and the air is cold.
Not so much when the plates are warmer and the air is warm..

Dbank · 10/09/2023 19:31

we usually heat the plates, especially in the winter, top oven lowest heat for 5 minutes.

hittingtheshelves · 10/09/2023 19:31

We only do it for Sunday roasts.

PurpleSky09 · 10/09/2023 19:32

I always heat the plates up, using the microwave.
