Government to *finally* look at banning XL bullies

Thank goodness. I cannot believe it has taken so long* to even look at banning these awful creatures (I say that as a dog lover). Looks like the viral footage of an XL mauling two men who were trying to defend an 11 year old girl is the straw that broke the camels back.

*policy makers have been captured by the RSPCA/Dog’s Trust etc “it’s not the breed, it’s the owner” dogma

@Frequency totally disagree. I've no idea why you're defending them?

What benefits of owning an XL bully do you see, that makes the risk to innocent people worth it?

WarriorN · 15/09/2023 15:50

Thank god the government have done something. Will this result is the euthanasia of all of them?

Should be muzzled in public going forward.

WarriorN · 15/09/2023 15:52

You won't see these dogs in the countryside.

Anyone living near sheep would know that they'd be shot on sight if they got out and into a field. You wouldnt risk it.

When you've lived in the sticks it does hone your dog choices.

I feel absolutely sick thinking about another person, a full grown adult human, dying in such an horrifically painful way. Anyone that has been bitten by a dog knows how painful it is. To actually die from being savaged by dogs is beyond horrific and NO ONE should have to be a risk of that.

I've had to come off Facebook. If I see one more fucking crying emoji at the prospect of muzzling a fucking lethal weapon I'll explode. Enough is enough. Get rid of them all, bastard things. And I say that as a dog owner.

Me too. I’ve just had to mute one of my friends that I hadn’t realised was thick as fuck before now.

WarriorN · 15/09/2023 15:57

A few years ago we were having this very same discussion about staffies and before that about pitbulls and rotties. After these dogs are banned we will be having this very same discussion about their next chosen breed/cross.

You do both.

Ban this breed and make sure more legislation comes in for dog ownership and also monitoring of certain sized breeds.

It's all clearly designer trend led by certain types of people. Facebook seems to have endless reels of certain types of trend dogs and the numbers of films of young babies near large dogs is staggering.

purpleme12 · 15/09/2023 16:09

Is this the breed that's bitten the most recent people in the news?

Frequency · 15/09/2023 16:11

@WhisperingHi

Disagree with what exactly? I made various points in the last couple of posts. If you disagree with my belief that breed-specific legislation does nothing to reduce dog bites and attacks how do you explain the fact that there was a 188% rise in dog bites between 1991 when BSL came into effect and 2021?

The data held by the ONS also shows that dog attack fatalities have risen since 1991 with the biggest increase being in 2002/03 and 2006, long after BSL was added to the DDA and long before the XL bully became popular.

Could you also point out where I have defended the XL Bully as a breed?

I disagree with BSL. I have not actually posted my feelings on the XL Bully itself one way or the other but FWIW, I think they are a horrifically overbred and unhealthy breed and should not continue as a "breed" on welfare grounds ditto the micro and pocket bully. I have no issue with the standard American Bully.

bombastix · 15/09/2023 16:40

Good decision by Sunak - these animals are a public menace and designed to be so.

Jadeywithababy · 15/09/2023 17:11

I am so relieved that this decision has been made, what a shame it took so many deaths and attacks to reach it though. I agree that banning this breed won’t solve the whole issue but it is surely a jolly good place to start?

But isn't it so fustrating that it takes so long for a reaction to a result that was inevitable.

Every injury and death could have been easily prevented with pre-emotive action.

It doesn't take a genius.

May1988 · 15/09/2023 17:51

So so relieved after a horrible incident a month ago walking with my 3 month old in a carrier, where one spotted me (or more likely my little asleep baby with legs poking out of the carrier) - must have been an adult male, absolutely huge, aggressive, muscled and terrifying. It started showing threat behaviour, growling and straining. It took TWO grown men to hold it back. I am traumatised and haven't been able to take my children for a walk around the area since. Nightmares and flashbacks. I am a dog lover but what I encountered had more in common with a tiger than a domesticated dog! Even a wolf doesn't have the jaw size and bully bite force of these hybrids. Anyone with children or other dogs SHOULD be scared and avoid these things like the plague in a public place. I know a ban won't get rid but hopefully will make it blimmin hard to breed them and sell them, meaning less on our streets and in communities!!

Boomboom22 · 15/09/2023 17:55

Just a terrible shame the rspca are so evil they made that amendment and no doubt will protest this. They need to be shut down as a charity, they support scum having does like this and do nothing when people neglect animals, apart from occasionally stealing and putting down pet cats.
Anyone who disagree with Rishi is too stupid to ever have any dog.
Just a shame they don't ban all big dogs, if an 11 year old who walks to school by themselves couldn't kick it off then it is too dangerous.

WhisperingHi · 15/09/2023 17:56

@Frequency have you considered the increase in dog ownership with your stats? Obviously bites will increase as dog ownership increases.

So no, that's not good use of data. Unless you were referencing an increase in bites as a proportion of the number of pet dogs?

May1988 · 15/09/2023 18:03

Agree, if it makes them harder/illegal to sell people will hopefully stop breeding them to make a quick buck! I would be SO relieved if I didn't have to worry about bumping into these in the park or on the street with my children (had one growl and strain to get to me and my baby when walking in local area)

Boomboom22 · 15/09/2023 18:28

This is really not helping me. I am already terrified of all dogs, I think they are evil nasty creatures with huge fangs and claws that want to eat me. Even tiny ones. This is pure validation of all my worst fears, that dogs want to and will eat babies and kill.strong grown men. I was right all along not crazy.

Boomboom22 · 15/09/2023 18:29

And crazy dog owners who believe they are safe, bringing them in to shops, pubs, restaurants and even public toilets! The countryside was already off limits now the town too. They don't care at all.

Frequency · 15/09/2023 18:31

No country tracks dog population levels, nationally, however, smaller surveys by pet food companies suggest that the dog population in the UK has remained steady up until the pandemic/lockdown.

There have been several studies by various organizations including DEFRA and the UK Government itself into the effectiveness of BSL on dog bites and fatalities. All of the studies concluded that BSL is not effective. None of them pointed to an increase in the dog population as a cause for the failure of BSL.

Why would they all want to eat you?

Most dogs are fed at least twice a day.

Sadly you do. I live in a large village/very small town and there is a bloke who honestly I wouldn't trust to ride a bike safely who has both an XL Bully ('You prob'ly seen them in the media') and what he describes as an American Staffordshire (and it looks like it too). He's unable to train the AmStaff to recall ('Tried everything') so it's always on-lead looking a bit manic and staring at other dogs, and the XL is young and has been fine so far.

He's the sort of inept owner I'd avoid anyway, and with two power breeds in tow he's a hard pass. One conversation with him was enough.

The local Malinois and cane corso, on the other hand, are impeccably trained, walk to heel and wait patiently in down-stays.

EdithStourton · 15/09/2023 19:56

I should add, I talked to Mr XL Bully a 5 min walk max from a field where there are often sheep.

This shows an attack in America. A Bull breed. It's attacking it's owner's partner.
XL's have pit bull in their makeup, but stronger.

The man's life is saved by police.

Was there a point to your post other than to incite panic @oakleaffy? It adds nothing else to the debate. There is no information surrounding the breed of the dog or the circumstances of the attack and no details on the owner or her background or the treatment of the dog prior to this incident.

It’s a pitbull. Apparently XL bullies have pitbull in them so I suppose that’s why it was posted?

Why would all that other stuff be relevant ? Irrespective of how the dog has been treated or the background of the owners the point is these dogs are extremely powerful and won’t stop during an attack until they literally have a bullet in them since grown men can’t even overpower them

There will always be bad owners and mistreatment of dogs, which is sad but if a dog is going to do so much damage as a result they’re not safe. And that’s even assuming this dog was poorly treated which it may not have.

There are abused dogs of all breeds but it’s a handful of them which come up time and time again in these kind of attacks.

GlowingBees · 16/09/2023 05:59

It's such a minor point but worth correcting so we don't fall
Into myth country... a wolf bite is stronger than an xl bully. A wolf bite force is around 400psi. An xl bully will be about 300psi. For context, humans are around 120psi.

As I say, tiny point but it's so easy to build up hyperbolic myths that I felt it worth mentioning.

Kwilko87 · 16/09/2023 12:25

That wasn’t an XL!! That was a staffy cross… bad breeding bad owners don’t blame the breed! Do you blame all men because a small minority are SO or DV PERP??
