Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Vegetarians had Cranks!

https://www.cranks.co.uk/

i was a child in the 70s and not a vegetarian but I first learned to cook vegetarian from a Cranks cookbook in my 20s.

Lots of brown lentils, carrots and nuts from memory!

I had to google Chicken Maryland and it has bananas on it? 🤔

Edited

I'd never heard of it either. I can't recall ever seeing it on a menu.

Love the Biggles menu.

Chicken schnitzel has appeared on menus locally . The new chicken Kiev?

I read that Black Forest Gateau is still hugely popular in Pakistan and features in many celebrations. Unfortunately I can't remember why!

Geekynzmum · 11/09/2023 18:17

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but Sainsbury's have black forest gateau in the freezer section of anyone fancies one!!! Not quite the same as a nice freshly made one, but a reasonable substitute.

Liver. Thank god.

I've seen liver and onions on plenty of pub menus in recent years...

WonThisNameInARaffle · 11/09/2023 18:21

Nandos has (or had) a liver dish too

HRTQueen · 11/09/2023 18:32

Onion loaf. Lots of onions deep fried in batter I think the place was called Rib Shack there were a few of them in central London

more of a side dish but we had it as a starter (in the days I could eat 4000 calories a day with no weight gain)

FreddieMercurysCat · 11/09/2023 18:33

Seafood pancakes. Quite the thing in late 80s/early 90s.

Did people really used to have orange juice as a starter? I remember this being a menu option for my school leavers ball over 15 years ago. I remember thinking how odd it was then.

You can just have a glass of OJ as your drink if you wish? Bizarre

Oh yes, absolutely they did - and it was the reconstituted stuff from a carton too! It still seemed like the height of sophistication to my teenage self in the early 1970s, who had never tasted juice before and had also only ever had expensive luxuries like orange squash or Cream Soda at Christmas and on other special occasions!

Orange juice was what I imagined the Queen might have at breakfast!
It's hard to get across to others who were born in a younger generation just how exotic and exciting "real fruit juice" (albeit from a carton!) seemed back then.

I’ve loved reading this thread! My contribution is bread and butter pudding with sultanas and jam.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/09/2023 18:45

Just remembered something else from a 70s/80s children’s party tea table - a whole jelly in the shape of a rabbit. My mum had a rabbit mould, made of orange plastic.

Complimentary bread rolls

Does anyone remember the Charlie Chalk children's menu at Brewers fayre in the nineties? I always used to pick the egg mayonnaise starter.

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

Go to Sorrento, they have all sizes of lemons there, delicious.

Cannelloni in a boiling hot metal dish! I haven't seen it in Italian restaurants (in the UK or Italy) for years.

Health and safety !!

I have a rabbit and used to do it for my kids.

My mam use to make Jelly in this huge glass/crystal apple shape bowl when I was little... I always thought it was a fruit bowl but it must have broke (or got thrown out) when we moved.

After my mam died I kept thinking about it so went online and bought a replica. apparently its from the 60s and I now think it was maybe a 'punch' bowl as it came with 6 identical 'mini bowls' and some vintage pictures showed liquid and a ladle type thing.

I really need to make some homemade jelly (maybe with fruit in) for my kids in the giant apple bowl now. It will always be a Jelly bowl to me.

Cheese tarts of various varieties

Baked Alaska. One of my favourite desserts but I can't find it. Last I had was 3 years ago in the student ran restaurant at my daughter's college, wasn't the best as it hadn't gone quite right for the kid that made it but love em for giving it a try

Oooh I'd forgotten about this. Thank you for reminding me! 😋
