What's the best vegetarian or vegan meal you've had in a restaurant?

I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I often eat vegetarian/vegan meals and I've read so many depressing stories on here lately about restaurants not making accommodations for vegetarians that I'd love to hear about some of the times they got it right.

What's the best vegetarian dish that you've been served?

Food for Friends in Brighton - amazing vegan curry, salads and gnocchi

No catch on hove seafront for vegan fish n chips and Happy Maki for vegan sushi burritos. I'm lucky there are lots of vegan options nearby.

Mallow in Canary Wharf is incredible

Also, strangely, theme park food in Mexico. Xel Ha mexican buffet was possibly the best meal of my life. Salsa, plantain, rice, beans - so very very tasty

A restaurant in Manchester that was all veggie and fancy but not expensive. It was amazing. It was a number not a name and I think it's closed now 1964 or something

I can’t even remember exactly what it was, but some sort of rice dish when we were in Portugal over 20 years ago. It probably wasn’t even that nice but was the first time we’d found an actual vegetarian meal that wasn’t chips or salad. Was just thinking about it today.

I once had a roast dinner at a nice restaurant and the veggie option was tempura batter cauliflower cheese.

It was so good I almost cried. And 10 years later it is still remembered as being the single best dinner I've ever had and comes up regularly in conversation 😂 (my husband tried a bit and was also amazed!)

(For full transparency- we aren't veggie or vegan. 50% of our meals are meaty - 50% vegetarian)

An amazing vegetarian thali at a simple family run Gujarati restaurant on Belgrave road in Leicester. In terms of the variety of flavours & textures it was easily as good as some tasting menus I have had at Michelin starred restaurants costing ten times as much.

Shayona, the restaurant by the Shri Swaminarayan temple in Neasden. Vegetarian IIRC, with vegan dishes, too. No fake meat. I don't remember what we ate, but everything was delicious. Lots of flavours, nothing just hidden under nondescript spiciness. Lots of texture and colour. Really excellent. I hope to eat there again one day.

I think it’s called the vegetarian food studio near roath. Lovely food and service. Parking a buggar if not from the area like us and don’t know the best free parking spots x @IClaudine

Local restaurant, heavily inspired by Ottolenghi. I had fried halloumi with honey and za'atar, roast aubergine with feta and pomegranate, roast tenderstem broccoli with chilli and lemon. It was delicious.

A goats cheese, honey and sage pizza in the French alps
A roasted mozarella with some sort of lemon oil I had in Verona. It was utter perfection and I’ve no idea how it was made (it arrived wrapped in baking paper, tied with string and it wasn’t a fancy restaurant at all?

I'm not a veggie but often have the veggie option. I had a peanut risotto several years ago that was amazing.

And earlier this year, I had salad of all sorts of interesting leaves - not just types of lettuce, couldn't identify some of them! - with bulgar wheat, squash, roasted beetroot, added optional feta (not sure if feta/Greek cheese is vegetarian?) crispy kale, and a lemon mint and tahini dressing. It was delicious, the best thing I've eaten this year, and maybe last year as well. The kind of thing you have to make a conscious effort to not keep saying 'this is amazing' 'this is delicious' 'god this is nice!' every few minutes Grin

Tofu Vegan in Spitalfields was amazing. Wish we lived closer so I could go back.
